"2013 NHL Playoff Pick'em" |
LAST EDITED ON 04-29-13 AT 08:50 AM (EST)Pick the winning team from each series right up to the conference and Stanley Cup finals. Here's a fictitious example: 1. Washington Capitals 2. New Jersey Devils 3. Buffalo Sabres 4. Pittsburgh Penguins 5. Ottawa Senators 6. Montreal Canadiens 7. Philadelphia Flyers 8. Boston Bruins The 1st seed plays the 8th seed, the 2nd seed plays the 7th seed and so on - example picks as follows. Series 1 Washington(1)/Boston(8) - Boston wins Series 2 New Jersey(2)/Philadelphia(7) - New Jersey wins Series 3 Buffalo(3)/Montreal(6) - Montreal wins Series 4 Pittsburgh(4)/ Ottawa(5) - Ottawa wins Should all my picks come in, I collect 4 points and my winning teams move on to the second round where I have picked teams all the way through to the Stanley Cup Final. (Note: Each conference reseeds after the 1st round, with the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining seed.) Correct picks in the first round are worth 1 point, 2 in the second, 3 in the third and 5 for the final. Pick a series in the correct number of games, i.e., Montreal over Buffalo in six games. So, along with naming your series winner, predict in how many games the series will end. One half point (0.5) will awarded for each correct answer. Lastly, in the unlikely event that we end up tied, a tie-breaking question for your viewing pleasure. Tell me how many goals will be scored in the Stanley Cup deciding game. Closest to the answer without going over wins the tiebreaker. Your picks must be submitted by replying to this thresd before the playoffs begin. This year's playoff match-ups: Eastern Conference 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8. New York Islanders 2. Montreal vs. 7. Ottawa Senators 3. Washington Capitals vs. 6. New York Rangers 4. Boston vs. 5. Toronto Maple Leafs Western Conference 1. Chicago Blackhawks vs. 8. Minnesota Wild 2. Anaheim Ducks vs. 7. Detroit Red Wings 3. Vancouver Canucks vs. 6. San Jose 4. St. Louis Blues vs. 5. L.A. Kings Previous winners: 2012: mrc 2011: mrc 2010: smokedog 2009: Col. Zoidberg 2008: Col. Zoidberg 2007: Pepe 2006: Nailbone Done by a Cap

So...I guess I'll have to come off my personal strike for the playoffs and see if I can reclaim my title.Of course, I'm realizing that, for the Wings to secure a first-round matchup with someone other than the Blackhawks, they may need the Wild to lose. Which means I have to root against the Wild - which means rooting for Colorado. I think I'm going to be sick. Brandon would be dangerous. He'd be the one the where the broadcaster uses his first, middle and last names. -suzzee

Seems pretty clear how the playoffs will develop. This year's playoff match-ups: Eastern Conference Conference Quarters 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8. New York Islanders: 5 games Isles might steal one, but no way they can compete with Pens. 2. Montreal vs. 7. Ottawa Senators: 6 games Tempted to pick the upset, but I think Montreal will right the ship. 3. Washington Capitals vs. 6. New York Rangers: 6 games Caps looked really good coming down the stretch. 4. Boston vs. 5. Toronto Maple Leafs: 7 games This is a heart, not a head, pick. I could easily see the Bruins being swept with the way they’ve been playing. Conference Semis 1. Pittsburgh vs. 4 Boston: 5 games Pains me to say it, I have no faith in the B’s this season. 2. Montreal vs. 3 Washington: 6 games Hopefully, it’ll be Ovie vs. Crosby in Conf. Finals. Conference Finals 1. Pittsburgh vs. 3. Washington: 7 games I hope the Caps can win this one, but if Crosby and Malkin play, I don’t see it happening. Western Conference Conference Quarters 1. Chicago Blackhawks vs. 8. Minnesota Wild: 4 games Chicago should trounce Minny. 2. Anaheim Ducks vs. 7. Detroit Red Wings: 6 games I’m a little unshaky on this pick, but I hope Detroit can’t compete. 3. Vancouver Canucks vs. 6. San Jose: 6 games I hope San Jose pulls off the upset, but I doubt it. 4. St. Louis Blues vs. 5. L.A. Kings: 5 games Seems like the Kings lost every game I saw them play down the stretch, and I haven’t seen St. Louis play this season, but L.A. should have enough left in the tank to get out of the first round. Conference Semis 1. Chicago vs. 5. L.A.: 5 games L.A. can’t hang with the Blackhawks. 2. Anaheim vs. 3. Vancouver: 7 games I hope Vancouver gets swept in 4. Conference Finals 1. Chicago vs. 2. Anaheim: 6 games I hope Anaheim pulls the upset, but Chicago just looks too good. SC Finals Pittsburgh vs. Chicago: 7 games (Tie-breaker: 7 goals) I hope this is a classic series that goes 7, with several overtimes. I hope Crosby plays the entire series. I’m not counting on the latter, however, which I think will make the difference. Done by a Cap

Eastern Conference 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8. New York Islanders - Not sure if Pittsburgh Penguins...or NHL All-Stars. Pens in 4 2. Montreal vs. 7. Ottawa Senators - Senators finished strong...but have to give it to the better team. Habs in 6 3. Washington Capitals vs. 6. New York Rangers - My mama told me, never trust anyone from the Southeast. This isn't 2002. Rangers in 6 4. Boston vs. 5. Toronto Maple Leafs - The Leafs made it in for the first time in forever. Wait for it...wait for it...and boom goes the Leafs. Bruins in 5 Western Conference 1. Chicago Blackhawks vs. 8. Minnesota Wild - The Hawks are either going to flush everyone or are ripe for an upset. Keep in mind, since the 24-game unbeaten streak, they're playing pretty well, too. Hawks in a sweep 2. Anaheim Ducks vs. 7. Detroit Red Wings - The Wings are playing well. The Ducks aren't playing especially well. This is my upset. Wings in 6 3. Vancouver Canucks vs. 6. San Jose - Not ready to trust the Sharks. Canucks in 5 4. St. Louis Blues vs. 5. L.A. Kings - The defending champs did it on the road last year. They can squeak by an evenly-matched opponent. Kings in 7 CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS 1. Pittsburgh vs. 6. NY Rangers - Pens in 5 2. Montreal vs. 4. Boston - Bruins in 6 1. Chicago vs. 7. Detroit - Hawks in 6 3. Vancouver vs. 5. LA Kings - Kings in 6 CONFERENCE FINALS 1. Pittsburgh vs. 4. Boston - Pens in 6 1. Chicago vs. 5. LA Kings - Hawks in 6 STANLEY CUP FINAL Pittsburgh vs. Chicago - Have to go with who's playing best. Pens in 7 Final game 4-2 for the Pens

rats. I was sick yesterday and for some reason, no doubt having to do with the past 5 years of playoffs, was convinced that the playoffs started tonight, not last night. This would have been my picks:East: Pitt > NYI 4 Ott > Mtl 6 Wash > NYR 7 Bos > Tor 5 Pitt > Ott 5 Bos > Wash 6 Pitt > Bos 5 West Chi > Minn 5 Det > Ana 7 Van > SJ 7 LA > StL 6 Chi > Det 7 (even though historically Detroit owns Chicago) Van > LA 6 (some revenge for last year) Chi > Van 7 (Chicago is still a problem for Vancouver - and they have a better team) Pitt > Chi 5 (this assumes Crosby and the other Penguins are healthy) Gosh. this is boring. I've gone for mostly favourites. It be much more interesting to have Toronto play Ottawa somewhere down the line and have a surprise team in the Cup Finals. how about Ottawa and StLouis? Two teams that haven't won the Cup in eons. Hmm. I suppose a Toronto Vancouver final would be similar - two teams that have never won the Cup since the first expansion, and Vancouver never.

LAST EDITED ON 05-01-13 AT 02:15 PM (EST)Hey, the Bruins don't begin the playoffs until tonight. Can I still play? And I actually don't know how yesterday's games came out, because I was travelling. Even if I can't, here are the regular bunch of losers: Eastern Conference 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8. New York Islanders (5 games) 2. Montreal Canadiens vs. 7. Ottawa Senators (7 games) -- Life is too short to root for the Habs, ever. 3. Washington Capitals vs. 6. New York Rangers (7 games) 4. Boston Bruins vs. 5. Toronto Maple Leafs (5 games) Western Conference 1. Chicago Blackhawks vs. 8. Minnesota Wild (4 games) 2. Anaheim Ducks vs. 7. Detroit Red Wings (6 games) 3. Vancouver Canucks vs. 6. San Jose Sharks (7 games) 4. St. Louis Blues vs. 5. L.A. Kings (6 games) Round 2 1. Pittsburgh vs. 7. Ottawa (5 games) 3. Washington vs. 4. Boston (7 games) 1. Chicago vs. 5. L.A. (6 games) 2. Anaheim vs. 3. Vancouver (7 games) Semis 1. Pittsburgh vs. 4. Boston (7 games) 1. Chicago vs. 2. Anaheim (6 games) Finals E. Pittsburgh vs. W. Anaheim (7 games) Edited to add: Tie breaker = 2

I think I should have more points. I correctly guessed the winner in 6 of the 8 series (Pit, Ott, Bos, Chi, Det and LA) and got all three western series in exactly the right number of games. I even had the right number of games for the Wash/NYR series but I know it only counts if you have the right winner. So, by my count, I think I should have 7.5.

I think you may have got mine wrong again. I had Pit over Ottawa correctly in 5 as well as Chi over Det in 7. Those should be 2.5 each plus 2 for Boston. I think I should be at 14.5. Thanks.
