7. "Really?" |
I guess that means I should never cheer for Montreal, except that I grew up as a Canadiens fan (the Cleveland Barons were the Canadiens' top farm club back in the Original 6 days, but the Barons' owner decided not to join the NHL when it expanded, to Cleveland's continuing regret).

Vokoun was chased afyer falling behind 3-0 in the first period; Fleury wasn't a whole lot better. More great play from Krejci and Horton, but there was plenty of credit to go around -- especially by Brad Marchand, whose breakaway goal in the first 30 seconds set the tone for the game.

True enough. Rask has proven himself -- even if he isn't as good as Thomas at his best, he also doesn't have the collapses that Thomas was prone to from time to time. He's stuck with the Bruins without complaining even though he couldn't push past Thomas as the starter (except for the 2009-10 season when Thomas wasn't playing at 100%), which led to him spending a lot more time in the minors or on the bench than he ever expected. And Horton has made the trade of Dennis Wideman, a first rounder and a third rounder to Florida for Gregory Campbell and Horton into grand larceny (not just petty theft), because he's been so solid. The thing about the current Bruins is that they don't really have superstars (except perhaps for Zdeno Chara), but they throw out four solid lines and three solid defensive combinations on each and every shift. Right now, the team is so solid that, to activate Ds Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference for the Pittsburgh series after their injuries, they had to bench rookie D Matt Bartkowski, who was one of the Bruins' best players against the Rangers in the prior round.

25. "Game 3: Boston wins 2-1 (2 OTs)" |
LAST EDITED ON 06-06-13 AT 00:44 AM (EST)Really, both goals in regulation were flukes, but the run of play completely favored the Penguins. Tuukka Rask needs to buy the goalposts a couple of drinks, considering the number of good shots that they stopped. In overtime, though, the Bruins generated most of the chances and finally won after 95 minutes of hockey when ancient (41!) Jaromir Jagr outworked Evgeni Malkin for the puck and fed it to Brad Marchand, who put it brilliantly on Patrick Bergeron's stick for a goal that Tomas Vokoun had no chance of stopping. No one in Boston is lamenting the loss of Jarome Iginla after that hustle play by Jagr. Jagr has finally started to click for the Bs now that he's on the same line with Marchand and Bergeron. Bergeron may be a Selke winner as a defensive forward, but there wasn't anything defensive about that play. I honestly don't think the Penguins can play any better than they did in Game 3. But it still wasn't good enough.

Yes, Tuukka Rask could be that good for one more game. He finished the Penguins series with a 0.44 GAA (2 goals surrendered in 4 games, including a 35-minute overtime).

Even though this is the Stanley Cup semifinals, they still have to fight for the arena. Apparently the Chicago arena will be home to a Rolling Stones concert on Monday night, so rather than 2 days off they went for back-to-back games. Maybe they also had to factor in other arena availability for the series.

Despite lack of Keith, the Hawks play a very good game. Even Kane finally shows up and scores - apparently following Bickell's pre-game sushi paid off! (Geez, I can't imagine that sushi would be good before a game)

So the possibility exists for an Original 6 final. Given that we've already had 3 Original 6 series in the playoffs, I wonder if it's an omen. When was the last time we had an Original 6 Final?

Thinking back, I believe that would be in 1979 when the Habs won their fourth straight Cup over the Rangers! The previous two years were against the Bruins.

And the last team eliminated in the second round? The Red Wings, a.k.a. 2008 Stanley Cup champs. (Who themselves eliminated the 2007 Cup champion Ducks.) So that leaves one question unanswered: What the hell, Carolina?
