"Toronto Maple Leafs - playoff-bound"
Most of you should know that I am a Montreal Canadiens fan and not a Leafs fan. But I live in Toronto, and am a Canadian hockey fan. So I think it is worth noting that the Toronto Maple Leafs have guaranteed themselves a place in the NHL playoffs.

Not a big deal to many teams (16 of 30 make it to the playoffs) but for the Leafs (and especially their rabid fanbase - Leaf Nation) this marks the first time since 2004.

Last time they made the playoffs:
- one of their current top players, Nazim Kadri, was in grade 8.
- Phil Mickelson had just won his first major
- Mean Girls was atop the box office
- Google had just announced its IPO
- Facebook and Twitter weren't around
- on a personal note, my youngest son, YoungYofferBoy, was not yet born (he was born in 2005)

So congratulations to the TML. I will be cheering for you to succeed in the playoffs, as long as it is not against my beloved Canadiens (which could be the first round!!!)

And the Red Wings' 21-year playoff streak may be ending this season. Bizarro world, indeed.

When the Red Wings last missed the playoffs in 1990, I wasn't born yet.

Not much of a TML fan, but very pleased for the city and the many local establishments that will benefit from some long overdue playoff hockey! For that reason alone, I hope they go deep.

Unless they face the Jets, right??

(I am hoping they squeak into the post-season also)

Not looking so good for the Jets after last nights loss to the Capitals. Shame.

Well, if you grew up in the Harold Ballard era, you'd understand why there are a lot of fans who deserted the Leafs.

Ballard makes Donald Sterling and Jeffrey Loria look like Branch Rickey by comparison.

Oh, and I was born in Quebec as well.

Moi aussi!

Pepe is dead right about the Ballard thing. People of a certain age segment (Pepe and I are in that age group) grew up when the Leafs were lead (?) by Ballard and destroyed. Remember that their captain from their last Cup in '67 and arguably the greatest Leaf, Davey Keon, wouldn't have anything to do with the team for about 40 years because of the Ballard era. Having been born in Montreal I had this excuse to cheer for Montreal, and since Montreal kept winning during the 70s (and 80s, and even into the 90s) it was easy to stay with them. Now they are in my DNA, and even though they have had a long drought from the Cup. I'm not holding my breath that this will be the year (certainly finishing 2nd in the East was a pleasant surprise) but I would rather cheer for Montreal when they lose than any other team when they win.

Ballard is the guy who thought it was a good idea to fire Roger Neilson, then after the fans and media threatened to break out the pitchforks, decided he didn't want to fire him after all and asked him to come back onto the bench for the next game while wearing a paper bag over his head to give the illusion of a mystery coach. Naturally, ol' Roger wouldn't do it and showed up for the next game as if nothing had happened.

One of the idiotic sports announcers in Boston (John Dennis by name) argued on the radio this morning that Leafs fans were terrible sports fans because they should be furious at the Leafs' exit from the playoffs, not just happy that the Leafs got there.

One of the other yakkers brought up the fact that over half the teams in the NHL make the playoffs, but the Leafs, who were left as a shell by Ballard, hadn't even MADE the playoffs in nine years, but John Dennis ignored it and continued to rant on the subject.

No wonder Boston sports fans have a bad reputation around North America.
