"London Olympic Pool" |
With the London Olympics only a couple of weeks away, I thought I'd bring out the old pool and see if there are still enough of us around to have some fun with it. Here are the rules for this year's pool. You are trying to get 15 countries with the most total medals. Since the USA, Russia, China and host UK are expected to dominate, they can't be picked at all, even in the "other countries" group. The 15 countries have to come from the following groups: Group A (pick 1 of 3): Australia, France, Germany Group B (pick 3 of 5): Cuba, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine Group C (pick 3 of 7): Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Netherlands, Romania, Spain Group D (pick 3 of 11): Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ethiopia, Greece, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Norway, Poland, Turkey Group E (pick 5 of ..): all other countries not mentioned above Entries to be submitted by midnight July 27th EST (that should be about 5 am on the 28th for Starshine) First tiebreaker: How many more medals will Great Britain win over last Olympics (they got 47 in Beijing) Second tiebreaker: what will Usain Bolt's time in the 100m be? (He ran 9.69 in Beijing) Any questions? Just let me know. Thanks and Good luck!

Group A (pick 1 of 3): Australia Group B (pick 3 of 5): Italy, Japan, South Korea Group C (pick 3 of 7): Belarus, Canada, Netherlands Group D (pick 3 of 11): Kazakhstan, Kenya, Poland Group E (pick 5 of ..): India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Switzerland, AzerbaijanFirst tiebreaker: How many more medals will Great Britain win over last Olympics (they got 47 in Beijing) Let me see, sailing and rowing looking good, cycling very promising, swimming ish, athletics quite silvery, lost all our decent Badminton players, wouldn't bet against Murray in the tennis, Tpm Daley only has to turn up to win the gold, might actually get a couple of gymnastics medals, few bronzes in boxing, possibilities in Hockey the womens team looks particularly good, some good chances in the marital arts. So I am saying 60 medals in total, that is 13 medals more. Second tiebreaker: what will Usain Bolt's time in the 100m be? (He ran 9.69 in Beijing) I don't think he is going to be running backwards when he crosses the line this time, 9.52 seconds. Lovely cheese Mooney

Scoring is as in the medal standings. If the US win gold in basketball, it counts as 1 gold medal just as if Phelps were to win the 200m butterfly.

I question whether medals won 4 years ago is a valid guide, although statistically there may be some basis in it.Consider that the medal winners will be (and so far, are) quite different from those who won medals in 2008. I think it's more like fantasy football, you have to look at each sport (each position) and each competitor at what level they are currently at. Some competitors four years ago are already out of the sport, although there are a few (like Phelps) who are capable of returning to multiple Olympics four or eight or twelve years apart and still compete. I started with some of the popular sports sites and then drilled it down to who the "hot" competitors are in some of the key sports, based on their performances over the last year and in their Olympics trials, and then combined country totals. A lot of these sports, I've known little about since the last Olympics, so (like FF), it called for a bit of research and, by admission, a bit of guesswork.

I have Ayak with Kor, JPN, ITA, never had his earlier picks in. I'll double check I'm not adding something additional into him or me or see how we match today. Found my mistake, along the way I must duplicated something in two of the formulas, the visual cue looks right, but I think when I did a move it may have added it in rather than just moved it up or down. Damn, I coulda used the three extra points. GO ESTONIA. Now if Bulgaria can just get off their collective butts. *sigh*

LAST EDITED ON 08-08-12 AT 05:50 PM (EST)A good day for Canada with 3 more medals. Unfortunately, Martine Dugrenier loses her bronze medal wrestling match for the second Olympics in a row. There is an interesting story developing in the decathlon as a Canadian is 3rd after the first day. Damian Warner has posted 3 PBs (I think) so far. He seems to be better in speed events than strength events (his worst showing today was the shot put) so he may not do so well tomorrow with javelin and discus. Also a big day for Germany who takes over the lead in Group A. Bet you France had a lot of you second guessing for a while Right now the 'best' would consist of these countries: A: Germany B: Italy, Korea, Japan C: Canada, Hungary, Netherlands D: Denmark, Kazakhstan, Poland E: New Zealand, Iran, Sweden, North Korea and Mexico. I've watched and followed the Olympics since childhood and, almost fifty years later, I am still fascinated by it, given its historical tradition. The medal counts are kept by those who keep count, yet I appreciate the immense effort by every single athlete in competition, regardless of nation or gender.

Congratulations to Cahaya and lvoe and respect to Aethelstan in 1996 we were 36th in the medals table, with one gold (Sir Steve Redgrave), 8 silvers and 6 bronzes. This time we had 5 athletes that won 2 gold medals, you can't appreciate the highs without seeing the lows.

LAST EDITED ON 08-13-12 AT 01:13 PM (EST)Woot, woot, saved by the British medalists on the tie-breaker, guessing just one over! That was close! Thanks for hosting, Aethelstan, and grats on your bronze, and grats to AyaK for his silver, tying the gold score and decided only by the tie-breaker! Great comp. (eta) Gah! A Belarus gold-medalist doping suspension! That puts me at silver, then, and AyaK wins the gold! Grats, Ayak, still great comp! Reading the news, the female Belarus shot-putter in question is going to appeal it, but it's open to question whether the IOC will change their mind, I doubt it. "To be honest I don't know all the details because I just got this information myself from the internet," the 31-year-old told local media in Minsk."It's a complete shock to me because I was tested on July 30 (before going to London). It showed I was clean," she said, adding that she would wait for the Belarussian delegation to return from London before deciding what to do next. "In total, I've been tested 16 times since April. You must be a complete idiot to take doping just before the competition especially such an outdated drug as a steroid, knowing you're going to be tested not once but probably several times." Ostapchuk also accused Olympic organisers of prejudice against the Belarussian athletes.

55. "Other ways of scoring" |
It's often suggested that I use a weighted system for scoring, so here would be the results with different scoring systems.If I gave 5 points for gold, 3 for silver and 1 for bronze: 1 Ayak 380 261 109 750 2 cahaya 375 264 108 747 3 Aethelstan 350 261 102 713 4 Puffy 315 264 97 676 5 Starshine 325 237 104 666 6 byoffer 315 240 100 655 7 Max Headroom 320 240 94 654 8 bullzeye 295 255 89 639 9 Snidget 300 228 80 608 10 Molaholic 295 225 85 605 11 Rebel Crown 265 228 98 591 If it were weighted 3-2-1 1 Ayak 228 174 109 511 2 cahaya 225 176 108 509 3 Aethelstan 210 174 102 486 4 Puffy 189 176 97 462 5 Starshine 195 158 104 457 6 byoffer 189 160 100 449 7 Max Headroom 192 160 94 446 8 bullzeye 177 170 89 436 9 Snidget 180 152 80 412 9 Molaholic 177 150 85 412 11 Rebel Crown 159 152 98 409
If it were by gold medals primarily (like many medal standings listed in the paper are marked) 1 Ayak 76 87 109 272 2 cahaya 75 88 108 271 3 Aethelstan 70 87 102 259 4 Starshine 65 79 104 248 5 Max Headroom 64 80 94 238 6 Puffy 63 88 97 248 7 byoffer 63 80 100 243 8 Snidget 60 76 80 216 9 bullzeye 59 85 89 233 10 Molaholic 59 75 85 219 11 Rebel Crown 53 76 98 227
As you can see, it doesn't really change much. Ayak wins no matter how you look at it. Congrats Ayak!

57. "Best outcome" |
The best result would have given 280 points. I'll list the countries that give that result along with the number of people who selected them.A. Germany (6) B. Japan (9), Italy (8), Korea (8) C. Netherlands (7), Canada (7), Hungary (0) D. Kazakhstan (3), Jamaica (8), Kenya (5) E. New Zealand (10), Iran (2), Azerbaijan (5), Colombia (0), Sweden (3).

Of course, we never know, even up to 8 years later...The IOC had said this would be its most extensive Olympic anti-doping program. It took almost 6,000 urine and blood samples, including no-notice tests ahead of athletes competing. Rogge cautioned that some samples are still being analyzed and "we might hear something tomorrow or the day after. Hopefully not, but you never know." I wonder how the money pools deal with this, the retroactive medal suspensions, hours, days, if not years, later.

Just for fun, I put in the medals won by the various countries during the Paralympic Games to see how we would do. The biggest difference is that the Ukraine is a powerhouse in the Paralympic Games getting 84 medals, good for 6th best where the 7th best country was Germany with 66. Japan got a measly 16 medals. Given the same rules as the regular pool, the best outcome would have been A: Australia B: Ukraine, Italy, Korea C: Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands D: Poland, Greece, Czech Republic E: South Africa, Iran, Mexico, Tunisia and Algeria. I should note that group E countries Austria, Egypt, New Zealand, Nigeria, Switzerland, Ireland all did better than group D countries: Greece and the Czech Republic Rank Name Gold Silver Bronze Total Best 174 162 183 519 1 Rebel Crown 140 130 122 392 2 Snidget 115 111 128 354 3 Puffy 115 125 112 352 4 Aethelstan 111 112 108 331 5 Ayak 107 115 107 329 6 byoffer 113 116 99 328 7 Starshine 106 106 110 322 8 Max Headroom 95 109 111 315 9 bullzeye 92 107 108 307 10 cahaya 90 101 99 290 11 Molaholic 93 94 96 283

The cynic in me says that one of the reasons why Russia, China, etc, have so many athletes with disabilities winning medals is that they push their regular Olympians so much that some have significant accidents and so become eligible for the Paralympics. Since they are already in the system, they just keep them there but shift the focus from Olympics to Paralympics.

73. "RE: London Olympic Pool" |
One of the things that made me think of it is the story of Canadian multi-medalist Summer Ashley Mortimer. At 15 or so, she was pegged as a hopeful for London 2012, in the Olympics, but an accident on a trampoline left her with a crushed foot, making her eligible for the S10 category. And, she did in fact make it to London 2012 but on the Paralympic side.It seems to me that in the sports cultures where children are identified at 4-5 to be Olympic caliber (East Germany did this, I'm sure other Warsaw pact countries do this as does China), then, even if accidents happen to a small percentage of the athletes, they just shift them, if possible, to Paralympics. The cynical part of me thinks that the % of accidents like this is higher in countries where elite athletes are pushed at such a young age. While it is true that these athletes aren't pushed to the margins of society while they are elite level athletes, one does have to wonder what happens after their best performing years are over. That said, I noticed that there were a number of older athletes performing at very high levels in the Paralympic Games (distance wheelchair runner Diane Roy is 41, she had four top 8 finishes and she wasn't nearly the only track & field I saw as in the 40s.)
