I am sure there will be a lot of discussion about actual results. Not for a second do I think those can be organized, other than to give them a common thread.

LAST EDITED ON 07-26-12 AT 04:50 PM (EST)In the Olympics, men's soccer features U-23 teams, with 3 "ringers" thrown in to attract audiences. Thus, the Spanish team that lost is NOT the same Spanish team that won the European championship . . . or the World Cup. By contrast, women's soccer features the real national team. Thus, this is a real rematch of the Women's World Cup. The reason for the men's rule is supposedly because players who play an entire league season in Europe and then play all summer in the Olympics get hurt more frequently, which the teams don't like, and FIFA isn't about to cut any of its competitions (in which, unlike the Olympics, the players have to play for no extra money). The real reason is because FIFA doesn't want any event to challenge the World Cup's place in the pantheon of soccer.

Nevertheless, Spain won the U21 Euro last year so they are still one of the favorites. This is quite the upset but they should be able to correct the situation. Overconfidence, I'd say.

U.S. vs Croatia womens' basketball, the Croatian ladies were tough, especially on D causing a lot of turnovers first half. Switching to fast break in the second half, the American ladies literally ran away with it.

She was awesome, winning by nearly a second I think it was. But the race of the evening was France versus the US or rather Agnel versus Lochte: Agnel blew right by him giving France an unexpected gold. Phelps still got medal #17 and he did well in his lap.

LAST EDITED ON 07-30-12 AT 07:02 AM (EST)Well everyone knew the rule and the questions is do the coaches only let two women do all 4 apparatus so you just don't give more than two the chance, or do you pick one woman to do all 4 that just isn't as good as your favorite to make sure that you have 2 in the top 10 and 1 in 20th place so you don't have to worry, and then risk blowing the team all around medal. Everyone knew the rule going into the competition (and I think they mentioned some other times this has happened, so it isn't some new rule just for the olympics) and the coaches could have easily picked a team or picked a line up to make sure that she had a near 100% chance to be in the individual all around. She still has a chance for two gold medals, so it isn't like she won't win anything now, but I certainly understand her disappointment and the team seems set up for one of the three girls to be screwed out of the individual all around by the scores, which I'd rather see than screwed over by the coaches to make sure a favorite doesn't have to beat a team-mate. I think the coaches were under pressure to make sure we won the team gold, and the best way to make a team that does that often means that one of the best in the world will not be in the individual all around. If you look a lot of other teams structured their teams so only two members had a shot at the all around individual medal.

32. "RE: Jordyn Wieber got SCREWED" |
LAST EDITED ON 07-31-12 AT 07:24 PM (EST)But why would you want to do that to either of the other two gymnasts, both of whom scored in the top 3 in the world in the qualifying? Bela Karolyi just sounded stupid when he was ranting on NBC about having Wieber go last in the floor exercises, because Reisman is the gold medal favorite on floor. The rule is that, in qualifying, each team has 4 competitors in each event (so one person sits out); one score doesn't count. In the team finals, though, you can only have three competitors in each event, and they have to be chosen from the competitors in the qualifying round. Reisman qualified for event finals on beam and on floor, and she could medal in both. Wieber only qualified for event finals on floor. McKayla Maroney qualified on vault, where she is the best in the world, and Gabby Douglas qualified on bars and on beam. The more interesting question is whether taller, thinner female gymnasts get an advantage in scoring over stockier, shorter ones. That was a subject of debate four years ago during the battle between the "tall, thin" (5'3") Nastia Liukin and the "short, stocky" (4'10") Shawn Johnson. Jordyn Wieber is (or, at least, claims to be) 5'2", but she has a lot more in common with Johnson than with Liukin in body type, while Douglas is more the Liukin type. In the team finals, Douglas is competing in every event. Wieber is not competing in beam; Reisman is not competing in vault or bars; Kyla Ross is not competing in floor or vault; and Maroney is only competing in vault. Edited for typos.

33. "RE: Jordyn Wieber got SCREWED" |
Personally, I think given the rules and with the goal of the best team with the best chance of the most medals the way they built the team was wise. To build a team to make sure last year's best will be one of the two allowed and screwing another girl who may be better this year out of her chance certainly doesn't seem fair. Now I can see where you could say that the only 2 go is unfair, but to make that rule a grand conspiracy against one athlete? There are other girls (and guys) in the top 24 who aren't in the all around final. My guess is the rule is to keep a dominate team from sweeping the all around--so my guess, more a grand conspiracy against the Chinese to keep them from winning every last all around medal. What killed me was Bela acting like they changed this rule in the middle of the competition just to screw his girl out of one medal. I didn't think he'd be such a spoiled brat, but maybe I should have expected it. If the coaches were hell bent on making sure this one girl got her shot they could have built the team a different way even if that screwed over someone else or the team as a whole. To me looks like they built the best team and said you wanna be in the individual, you compete for it and we will see who is the best on that day, not last year, not last Olympics. Now I do think the body type issue is interesting. For some of the increasingly difficult elements (compared to lets say the 1970's of Olga and Nadia) the girls who are going to be most able to do that could end up being the stockier more muscular girls. But asthetically I think they want the slimmer, longer look (as if anyone who is short enough to do gymnastics can ever be called long) so I suspect girls with that look get the benefit of the doubt a lot more often. And if the actual US coaches really thought she was being judged too harshly at the time they could have ponied up the fee to ask for the judges to review the tape like the Japanese did. Guess no one thought she was worth $500 at the time (and if you win the challenge you get the fee back). I just hate the attitude some have that she should basically have had the individual all around gold handed to her the moment the opening ceremonies ended. I get she has her fans, but part of the excitement, for me, is to see who can actually time the training and the skill to hit the right combination of peaking in the right year on the right day. I don't care who was dominate in a sport in 2010 or 2011.

The events are randomly assigned by the computer when you put in the game code from the McDonald's piece, so you have no control over what comes up. Or which prizes. I really just wanted some bonus MCR points (last prize, 40 point codes). There are larger items, obviously, but your odds of getting them are progressively worse -- except for the Sonic The Hedgehog comic, which everyone is being offered and no one wants. And no matter what, you don't win the prize unless the U.S. gets a gold in that event.Swimming? Well, today, I have Men's 200m Freestyle and Men's 100m Backstroke. After that, it's Women's 200m Freestyle, Men's 200m Individual Medley and Women's 50m Freestyle. Track and field... I have Men's Triple Jump, Men's 10000m, Women's Heptathlon, and Men's Shot Put. The rest of my board is fencing and wrestling.

LAST EDITED ON 07-31-12 AT 09:20 AM (EST)I like to live in a world where the glass is half full (or more). I want to believe that my kids can play safely in their backyard. I want to believe that lost wallets get returned. I want to believe that fellow RTVW peeps are not serial killers. And I want to believe that athletes, including Ye Shewin, are clean. But... ...this is one area where I am skeptical. This is not a Bob Beamon moment. That can happen in long jump, where one can just crack everything perfect, but IMO can't happen in a 400m swimming event. Sure, personal bests can happen out of competitive adrenaline, but not the sorts of improvements she has had over such a long swimming race. Her improvements over the last couple of years are beyond explanation, but if that was all I would still want to believe. But this is Chinese swimming, and to me that adds another layer of skepticism. They have a history of doping infractions, including quite recently with another swimmer. I think one of the saddest things in sport is all those records set in the 80s by women in Track and Field (I am sad for the current clean athletes in those sports who have no hope of catching those records). And I use the term women very loosely. Many were east block athletes, and stories have come out showing that they were doping, but the other powerhouse in T&F, the USA, has also been caught (and with Marion Jones much more recently). Flo Jo got away with it, but is every bit as guilty as OJ Simpson. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck....

Well the Lithuanian Teen actually by percentages increased her personal best more than the Chinese girl.http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19062851 "If you work it out in percentage terms, Meilutyte actually made a bigger percentage improvement over the 100m than Ye has in the 400m." And Eastern Europe/former USSR kinda of have a history of doping as well. I can believe a teen increasing their personal best by a lot because they are still growing and developing and I think sometimes the stars align and they grow into their talent at just the right time, and we often catch that moment as there is a lot of public record keeping in sports. And, I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years we find out what this year's Olympians were taking that we don't know how to measure. Because, well, with the stakes as high as they are, people are going to do everything legal and illegal to try to get an edge.

You call her Lithuanian, we call her Now living and training in Plymouth and therefore an honourary Brit.OK I was all right at football, and a fair standard Badminton player but not in these people leagues. However I have had the game where everything went right, when the shuttle hit the line every time instead of going an inch over, where everything has just gone perfectly, maybe this was their perfect game? Also speaking for Ruta, she doesn't take part in collegiate games, we know how the US swimmers will perform at a big event because they take part in them all the time, we didn't know how it would impact her, and it seems that it makes her a tad faster. If you read what Adrian Moorhouse and The Thorpedo say then this doesn't seem that unusual, it's just that she started from the 14th best time ever.

Without getting into politics, I think it's because, by being a smaller community, we have more of a role-model effect. The Canadian diving team has been dominated by Quebecers for a few decades (Bernier, Pelletier, Despaties) so a tradition has installed itself just like in Judo (Gill), Short-track speedskating, Acrobatic skiing, etc... Also, some training centers are located here and that helps a lot.

Maybe I'm unique in my way of thinking, but in order to get the gold medal or the championship, I've got to beat everyone else so whether I meet the good teams in the QFs or the Finals makes no difference - I still gotta beat them wherever and whenever I meet them. I can see how it would be different for the Olympics, though. In pro sports, there's no reward for second or third place, just a championship; by contrast, there's a silver and a bronze for finishing second and third, so there's motivation to work your way into the semis at least. Still, I could never accept giving my less in any match, whether it's a sudden death or a meaningless final-round-robin matchup, and I think it's a slap to the ideals of the Olympic spirit to rip off the fans and viewing audience world-wide to blatantly tank the way the badminton teams did. In badminton, there's no bench players and there's no opportunity to rest a big star for an upcoming match. In particular, I feel for the fans who shelled out a ton of money to watch that sham of an event, but won't get any refunds.

Below is a link to the results for the mens double sculls rowing reaults.http://www.london2012.com/rowing/event/men-double-sculls/phase=rom022100/doc=results.html There are two finals, called the A and B final. The A final is for the medals, and the B final is like the consulation final (I am not really sure why they do the latter). What is interesting are the times. The winners of the B beat the time of the winners of the A by 11 seconds. In fact, all but the last team in the B had better times than the Gold medal team, and even the last place team in the B (sadly Canada) was better than the Silver medal team. All I can think is that a bunch of wind (or maybe rain?) came up between the two races, which were probably run back to back. Strange, huh?

Mostly the problem the only ones complaining about the Olympics seem to be having with your Olympics is yall/youse refuse to have 100% of the events occurring between 8-11 pm EDT.Although they mostly seem to be mad at NBC for your failure to hold sporting events in the middle of night. Although that may be that people here don't quite understand the earth is round, and that there are time zones...I mean they really seem to believe NBC could show everything live during prime time if they wanted to and they are only doing tape delay to annoy people. Then there are the people who have figured out the internet and are upset that other people who have also discovered the internet are tweeting about things as NBC airs it on the web, not on the TV. Otherwise most of what I have read seems favorable. but it won't fit on his shirt

I watched the trampoline! (OK on TV)That said a lot of the sports are ardua, but through hard work you can understand how people (special talented people) can do those things. With the Trampoline though... 10 bounces, tricks every time, that was the closest to astra I have ever seen. Per Ardua ad Astra indeed! The Sunday Times had a couple of quotes that summed the crowds up for me "Calm down, you aren't Armenian you are from Swansea" and "Yesterday I felt Australian, today I'm feeling more Swedish"

LAST EDITED ON 08-06-12 AT 07:23 PM (EST)The 5-goal "patch" seemed like "rock-em, sock-em robots." Canada scored at 67 minutes; the US reponded at 70 minutes; Canada scored again at 73 minutes. And the goals were phenomenal shots. I've never seen so may players put the ball in the net off the side of the posts. And the final US goal would have been stopped by the keeper had it been a foot lower. Christine Sinclair showed once again that she is the best active striker in international women's soccer. I don't know why she has never gotten the respect of a Marta. They didn't start giving the FIFA Player of the Year award for women until 2001, so Michelle Akers never won it, but the winners have been: 2001-02 Mia Hamm (USA); 2003-5 Birgit Prinz (GER); 2006-10 Marta (BZL); 2011 Homare Sawa (JPN). Sinclair has never finished in the top 3 for the award. Marta has won it five times, plus two seconds and a third. But you'd never have guessed that by watching the 2012 Olympics. The handball penalty that gave the US its equalizing PK was a fair call, but the delay penalty against Canada immediately preceding that seemed harsh. Then again, this was a VERY physical game, and the referee let all kinds of things go. I was surprised that none of the players were carrying blackjacks.

Canada may have gotten robbed on the free kick (not the penalty kick), although the justification was that the keeper had already been warned once for the six-second delay. That's one of the reasons why you see many keepers put the ball on the ground before kicking -- so the six-second clock isn't running. It's still a harsh call to accept, even with the prior warning. But I disagree totally about the handball. Maybe I'll see a replay that leads me to feel differently, but "ball to hand" generally only works when you're no more than a couple meters away from the kick. If you're far enough away to react, you have to move your arm out of the way. It's simply the rule. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdqwyv_ghana-v-australia-2010-kewell-red-c_sport

LAST EDITED ON 08-07-12 AT 08:12 PM (EST)It was a terrific match, and hopefully the US/Japan match will be as exciting. What great play from Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe; and Christine Sinclair was just sensational. In fact the entire US and Canadian squads were superb, it's unfair to just mention the scorers and standouts. All sports have to put up with arguable (and sometimes blatantly bad - case in point was one obvious corner out call that went the US way) official calls, and no doubt that the US benefited to some degree this time. Hopefully Karma waits one more match to assert itself. And according to at least one account, The Canadian women got snookered. The ball and hand call was good, the time delay call was good after repeated and even longer delays by the goalie, with the referee being helped in time keeping by Abby Wambach. To me, and from this account, Canada got out thunk. http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-blogs/soccer/fifa-investigating-canadas-comments-following-semifinal-loss-to-u-s.html

Would there be nearly the amount of column inches and news organizations discussing her hair or pink unitard if she looked like Nastia from 2008We can't talk about her talent and skill? Really Faux News, lots of American girls (the white ones) have competed and won in pink at the Olympics (see Nastia, individual all around 2008). And the Chinese you were praising have blue ones they wear some of the time depending on the event. Usually the team wears the team uniform in some/all of the flag colors for the team competition, but I think a lot of them wear other competition outfits (like whatever they wore for Nationals that might be the gym outfit) for the individual events. Not just the Americans, either. I dunno if you can wear the team uniform for the non-team events, but some of them may be doing that. May depend on how many events they are in and if they can actually get the things cleaned fast enough as I would think it would be better to pack two or three outfits than spend all your time doing laundry.

Bolt wins the 200m. Jamaica sweeps the podium and a journalist asked Usain about the Jamaican drug team...He meant track team but mispoke!Oscar Pistorius didn't get to race in the 4x400m relay because the second relayer fell. However RSA will make the final after winning the appeal (Kenya caused the fall) Wow! The second relayer for USA broke his fibula but kept racing for 200m to pass the baton. It must have been hell. Kenya's Rudisha sets a world record in the 800m, being the first ever under 1:41. (800m is my favorite race of all.) The decathlon competition was amazing as always. USA finish 1 and 2 while Canada has hope for the future, Warner finishing a strong 5th. Canada won bronze in soccer to compensate for the semi-final deception.

Geez Wayne, are you really suggesting that the song "Imagine" = global communism? Seriously?Ok, I did some googling and see you are not alone. That makes me disappointed, but sadly not surprised. There are over 50,000 registered users on RTVW, and unless Mark David Chapman is one of them I suspect there are none that dislike the Beatles more than I do. I pretty much always change radio stations when their music comes on. But I just can't believe that people would go as far as to claim that song is anything but an anthem for peace. ~boggle~

Who?*looks* Not me. And now I'm insulted. How dare you call me white! Okay, here's the point. You said this was about countries trying to prove they're the best. I think that's unfair to the bulk of the athletes. There are some nations which do follow that policy: you win because we are the strongest nation and if you don't win, you don't represent us well enough. China sometimes seems to follow that policy, and Iran comes across as locked into it for the forseeable and enforceable future. In that sense, they are acting as their nation in this competition, and no individuality is allowed. In fact, good luck to any Iranian athlete who decides to defy their country's policies and compete as an individual. "To be the best, I have to beat the best. Bring on my Israeli counterpart!" (Note that this didn't -- and couldn't -- happen, by IOC design: seedings were made to keep Israeli athletes apart from Iraqi ones, among others -- any nation which automatically forfeits rather than play a Jew. This didn't prevent all skip-outs: a few Islamic nation athletes came down with mysterious cases of Jew Flu and didn't attend the Games.) Then you have athletes who just happen to be from a country, or at least bearing its flag. They don't care about nationality or politics: they just want to play. We always get a few people who just head back to the land of their grandparent's birth, where the law allows them to join that country's team, and there are others who show up for the games and the anthem is just what they hear if they win. And then you have the representatives. You're Xish, but it doesn't completely define you. Still, you're proud to be from X, you will stand proudly for X while the anthem plays, and you're glad all the Xians back home are cheering for you. I'm just asking you not to lump them all into the first category. Let the athletes be people -- at least as far as their handlers will allow.

I can understand that. There are distinctions to be made between countries participating in the olympics and athletes participating in the olympics. The motiviation of one may not necessarily be the motivation of the other. But, it is a symbiotic relationship. The country could not participate without the athlete, and vice versa. I have nothing to back it up, but I'd be willing to bet that the motivation of most countries (not just China or Iran, but U.S., G.B., France, Canada, etc., too) falls closer to the showcasing of native talent on the world stage than it does providing an opportunity for world-wide community growth and unity.
