Selig is clearly the least competent. Yet he's no more hypocritical than your average used-car salesman, which is what he was. Stern is the most competent, but he also scores high on hypocrisy. Bettman is about in the middle on each scale. And Goodell is the sultan of hypocrisy, plus he appeared incompetent during the ref's strike, which doesn't bode well. The problem is that the commissioner reports to the owners, and only the owners. The owners want to make more money. Sometimes you get a genius like Pete Rozelle, who convinces the other owners that the way to make more money is by cooperating with each other so that they can negotiate from a position of strength against everyone. And sometimes you get a total idiot like Bowie Kuhn. Baseball has stuck with Bud Selig for so long because, despite Selig's incompetence, he still may be the third best baseball commissioner ever (behind only Peter Ueberroth and Happy Chandler, and neither of them lasted over six years).   Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
