"Teofilo Stevenson died"
I don't know if very many people here are familiar with Teofilo Stevenson, or even how many follow boxing. But this guy was the boss hog in the ring back in his day.

I enjoyed watching him during the Olympics, he won three golds in the 70's/80's and never turned pro (thus turning down the mega millions available at that time) because of Cuba's rules - he would have had to defect to do so, and never got to fight Ali. He could very well have beaten Ali in the prime of his career.

Yes, at the prime of Stevenson's career, he could have beaten Ali. But that's not saying much, because Ali was never the same boxer after the third and last fight with Joe Frazier in fall 1975.

Ali was defeated by Jimmy Young in 1976, although Ali was awarded the decision in one of boxing's never-ending string of seemingly-fixed decisions, and Stevenson could have wiped the floor with Jimmy Young at that time.

You had to figure Ali was done when a chump like Leon Spinks was able to beat his azz after only 7 fights as a pro. He should have retired after the Thrilla in Manila, because he got $hithammered by some inferior chumps after that fight, and it's probably why his Parkinson's is as bad as it is.

I suspect that it was the cumulative effect of all his fights that resulted in his Parkinson's. But I also think that George Foreman was the biggest contributor.

The reason I would have liked to see the Ali-Stevenson match up was that they both had the same jab-circle-dance boxing style instead of the flatfooted bore in and pummel or wait for a big punch style of Foreman, Frazier, (esp) Liston. I guess Norton came the closest to Ali's style of those he faced.

Stevenson was fun to watch, much like Ali.
