"RE: Rangers' Hagelin suspended 3 games for elbow" Not sure what you mean by: So pummel a guy on the ice is worst than an elbow. The elbowing resulted in the longer suspension. What I found humourous was Torterella's reaction afterwards. He looked like he was implying that Alfie ducked and that's why he got hit in the head. It was quite the contrary, Alfie did a textbook preparing for a check in the new NHL. He braced himself, and drew himself to full height and he still got an elbow to the head and not near the shoulder or anything. That must have been the easiest suspension call to make. I saw Kerry Fraser's explanation on TSN after the game - while it makes sense, it's still garbage. He said that while the referee was right there on the other side of the blue line, it's still the linesman's call to make on that play. If there's no motion or call from the linesman, the ref can blow the whistle and call it off-side -- but in this case, the linseman (who was closer to the red line than the blue line at the time) made the 'no off-side' motion so at that point, the ref had to back off as the call has been made. Hagelin elbow to Alfredsson's head, Boyle doing a Marchand on Karlsson which touched off a series of bouts including Carkner jumping Boyle and other niceties being exchanged. - Kings-Canucks, Bitz drilled Clifford in the head with an elbow from behind and got suspended for it. - Sharks-Blues, cheap shots exchanged at the end of the game yesterday, little donnybrook taking place. - And last, but not least, the Flyers-Pens series is completely out of control now, both on the scoreboard (32 goals in 3 games) and especially on the fight card. Cheap shots galore and we've got superstars brawling with each other (Giroux vs. Crosby in one bout). There's even hair-pulling (Hartnell vs. Adams). So why did Backstrom get one game while Asham got 4? Backstrom is a big name player, Asham isn't. ETA: I think Torres is going to be moved to the top of your list by this time tomorrow - he's a repeat offender and Shanaban will be under pressure to ramp up the suspensions (as it appears he's doing with the Asham and Shaw suspensions). While it's good to see that Shanaban is finally taking note of all the cheap shots out there and is starting to penalize hits more severely, I still think 25 games is excessive for this kind of hit. To me, open ice hits should not be penalized 6 times more severely than for a flying elbow to the head of a guy pinned against the boards. Yeah yeah yeah, Torres is a multiple repeat-offender, but still... On the bright side, we've had some pretty clean games the last two or three days, especially in the Philly-Pitt series.
