"Stan's Pick 8" |
Obviously I'm impatient today. Here is a March Madness game that Gothmog began a few years ago, which Stan took over, and which I always enjoy. So, with or without their permission his permission (hopefully), I'm starting it again this year. I've cut & pasted his instructions: Here's a different kind of NCAA pool. It seems fairly simple, yet I've never managed to finish higher than 5th, and I usually lose to 8 yr olds picking at random, or people picking by cities they've visited, favorite colors, or teams with "Wildcat" mascots, or some such or to Jbug, who, well works her own kind of magic if you will. Here are the rules: 1. Each team in the tournament is assigned a point value, based on their seed. (See below). 2. Before the first game on Thursday (the play-in game doesn't count), you must pick 8 teams. You may pick any 8 that you like, regardless of where they appear in the bracket (although it's wisest to pick teams that won't meet each other right away). 3. For every team that you pick, they get their pre-assigned point value each time they win. Once the team loses, they can no longer get any points. 4. You cannot change teams or edit your picks after the start of the first game on Thursday 5. The winner is the person with the most total points. If there is a tie, then the tiebreaker is total number of points that will be scored by both teams in the CHAMPIONSHIP game (closest wins). Strategy hints: Like I said, I can't seem to figure this game out, but here's what I've observed: The winner of this usually has around 40-50 points, so you want teams that will get you about 6-8 points each. If you can pick a lower seed to win a couple of games, that's worth more points than a #1 seed that will win it all. I usually try to pick teams that are spread out among the brackets, but there have been occasions where the top 3 point-getters are all from the same region. The winners of this pool seem to be the ones who pick the mid-range seeds that go far, but I've tried that strategy and ended up with only 2 live teams by the end of the first weekend. So if you have a better idea, by all means go for it. Here are how the points are assigned: Seed....Point value per win 1............1 2-3.........2 4-5.........3 6-8.........4 9-11.......5 12-13......6 14-15......7 16..........8 If you'd like to play, then sometime before Thursday, post your 8 teams and the total number of points you think will be scored by both teams in the championship game (to be used as a tie-breaker). Hopefully Stan will see his name in the subject line and take over. Otherwise, you're stuck with me, and I'm already running Nutzy's pool and am smack dab in the middle of the start of little league. I used my Official OT bracket to help me decide who to pick. Numbers after the teams are points per win and my estimated points they will earn for the tourney. I should have 63 points at the end of the game.Tiebreaker Total Score: 145 SOUTH: none EAST: (4) Wisconsin - 3 - 9 (3) Florida St. - 2 - 8 WEST: (6) Murray St. - 4 - 8 (14)BYU - 7 - 7 (2) Missouri - 2 - 8 MIDWEST: (11)NC State - 5 - 10 (14)Belmont - 7 - 7 (2) Kansas - 2 - 6 School Spirit by Syren, 2005

As I suspected, the scores at my work were unusually high this year, owing to the success of local teams. Virtually everyone (except me, and I suffered for it) had both Xavier and Cincinnati, our two home-town teams, which were worth 18 points right there. Many also had Ohio, OSU, Louisville, and Indiana; only a few had Kentucky, because of the low point-value. There are over 20 people (out of about 100) with more than 40 points at my work pool. The current leader has 54, with the following teams: Kansas, Louisville, Xavier, Cincinnati, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, and Wichita St. The only dud was Wichita St.

Thanks for running this, Boo. I was effectively out of commission for the week. We left Saturday morning on the 10th and didn't get back until the 19th so I missed selection Sunday and everything so I was not in a position to participate in any of the pools this year, here or elsewhere. At least, I'm able to sign up for the second chance pool.

LAST EDITED ON 03-26-12 AT 12:28 PM (EST)Thanks!--though I wish I had done better in my work pool, where money will change hands. My 40 points there is currently good enough for a tie for 22nd place. The leader has 64, and there are six people with at least 50. The success, and high point value, of all our local teams was killer for me. Four people ahead of me have all four teams in the final four still alive, which means they'll get more points no matter who wins. This usually never happens. I will, however, win some money (though not as much, since fewer people participate) from the women's Pick 8 at my work; I'm currently in the lead and guaranteed to finish in the top 3. For that one, I just picked all the 2 seeds, and then some 4-5 seeds. Since the women's bracket this year tended towards chalk, I did pretty well. I only need any one of the 2 seeds to pull an upset in the elite 8 to win the pool. If I win, the winnings can cover my losses in both pools for the next several years.

LAST EDITED ON 04-03-12 AT 02:55 PM (EST)In my pool at work, I finished tied for 25th. The winner had 66 points, 2nd had 59 and 3rd had 58. In the women's tournament pool, first place had 46 points, 2nd (me) had 45. Alas. These two pools show how different tournaments affect the points. The women's tournament this year was much closer to chalk. And with respect to geography, it had fewer teams from my locality do well. Both of these factors contributed to the lower winning scores in our women's pool. Thanks to everyone for playing! etf: grammar
