"RE: NCAA Basketball Tourney - Week 1 discussion thread" Wow, 8 games are final and no upsets. That is... upsetting. Looks like the closest was #1 Syracuse struggling with #16 UNC Asheville. (UNCA were even leading at half time). I did not see much of the game. He did not score one point. Not one! This is the guy who burned up Duke and UNC in the ACC tournament last week. I said that I almost always cheer for the smaller schools and so said Lehigh. It was cute to see them cheer for every basket all the while I'm trying to temper their expectations because I didn't expect that outcome! By the end of it, my 4-year-old is chanting "Lee-high. Certainly this trend has shifted how teams are built at the top schools? But is this a problem at the non-top schools? Are they able to have more cohesive teams with more juniors and seniors? Look at last year's F2. They were largely unexpected to be in the F2. Did they have more cohesive teams? Naturally, I lost in my most important tournament (one pick each day. can only pick a team once, winner gets the whole pot) by picking the one Big Ten team that fished out: Michigan. Ohio schools. Doesn't matter which league, even. OSU (Big Ten), Cincy (Big East), Xavier (A-10) and Ohio U. (MAC) are all left, the first time ever that one state has produced four of the Sweet 16. Kentucky. Wow. Just wow. But now we'll see, with their rematch against Indiana. Major conferences. Here's who's left: Big Ten 4, Big East 4 (Syracuse, Marquette, Louisville, Cincinnati), SEC 2 (Kentucky, Florida), Big 12 2 (Kansas, Baylor), ACC 2 (UNC, NC State) -- that's 14 of the 16 from the power conferences, plus the 2 Ohio schools (Xavier, Ohio U) to round out the field. Eastern Time Zone teams. 12 of the 16 play in EST, with the exceptions being the two Wisconsin schools and the two Big 12 schools, all of which play in CST.
