The first major signings are on the verge of breaking into whatever headlines they can grab, which makes this a good time to start the scorecard on who winds up where. For starters, the never-named sources claim we have the initial big splash days to hours away, made by the Marlins, who are going to sign --*sigh* -- Jose Reyes. Six years, $102m, an option for a seventh. (Hanley Ramirez is equally sourced to be moving to third base.) And they're going after Pujols next. There will now be a brief pause while I write off the local 2012 season. ...well, that was quick. The Mets will sign no one. As is 'No players, no payroll, forfeit 162 games, make a profit, repeat.'

You're not excited by Ruben Tejada at shortstop? If it makes you feel any better, the Marlins grossly overpaid for Reyes at $106MM, and they paid top dollar for Heath Bell too. With his injury history, who in their right mind would give a six-year contract to Reyes? (How soon everybody forgets the Carl Crawford contract.) And three years is a long time for a closer's contract, not to mention the $27MM price tag. The Mets' problem is that they still owe a lot of money to David Wright, Jason Bay (gigglesnort), and Johan Santana. Good luck absorbing that load and still having money to pay the peanut vendors, let alone adding competent players to the roster. And here's a final thought for you:

Now Albert is considering three offers for 10 years and $200 million dollars-- the Marlins, Cardinals, and a third unidentified team. It's madness.

Make it four. The latest scuttlebutt has the Cubs and the Angels possibly in the mix as well.

Well... the Mets *did* have Bautista once upon a time, back in 2004 for a day - he was part of the trade that brought Anna Benson to New York.

Wow, I never thought Albert would leave St. Louis. At least the Angels can put him at DH for those last few years when he's too old to play the field.

I didn't think he'd leave StL either. Is that a guaranteed contract? If so (and even if not so)...WOW. 25M/yr for 10 years. He probably has incentives built into that too. No one, but no one is worth that. But if anyone was, Pujols might be. No scandals on or off the field, presumably no steroid use, promotes baseball in Dominican republic, a hero there and here, and a prodigious hitter (avg 42 hrs/yr), outstanding defensively, outstanding post season offensive, capable of winning a number of games basically single handedly that a team would otherwise lose. Throw in a few GG awards, and he's almost the perfect player. Maybe he could work on stealing a few more bases. About $150,000 a game, or about $50,000/hour. If he lasts 10 years. The Angels will probably be getting less, maybe only 4 or 5 years. If his contract is guaranteed, that is a mighty sweet deal, and kudos to him for taking it. He'd be insane not to.And if they really wanted him (and could afford it), poo poo on StL for not matching.

29. "Blue Jays to get Yu Darvish?" |
LAST EDITED ON 12-16-11 AT 10:08 PM (EST)The scuttlebutt is rather strong that the Blue Jays have outbid everyone else for the right to negotiate with Yu Darvish. If that's true, that's a major coup for the Jays and they'll not only have a drastic upgrade to their pitching rotation (the weak spot from last season) but also rake in tons of money from new fans. The Toronto area has about 320,000 Asians and 95,000 Persians (Darvish is half-Iranian), so the attendance is sure to go up and the marketing possibilities could result in a bonanza. For me? About freakin' time the Jays upgraded their roster in a major way! One of many articles analyzing the possible Jays move to get Darvish ETA: Had a good laugh at this completely-butchered translation from Japanese to English... monsters!

30. "9 years, $214 million for Prince Fielder" |
LAST EDITED ON 01-24-12 AT 05:56 PM (EST)... with the Tigers. I gotta say I didn't see that one coming. At all. It was just last week the GM was saying he wouldn't want Fielder for anything longer than a year with Victor Martinez returning in 2013. So... where is everyone gonna play? Congrats, Tigers, you now have more DHs on your roster than anyone else. Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Prince Fielder, Ryan Raburn, and Brennan Boesch are all below-average fielders more suited to playing DH than in the field, while Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta are meh. Heaven help them if they decide to bring back Magglio Ordonez to play in in the OF again. So when Victor comes back, who plays where? Miggy back at third base again? He'll be lumbering after bunts all year. One of Fielder and V-Mart will have to play first base with the other being the full time DH.

35. "RE: 9 years, $214 million for Prince Fielder" |
LAST EDITED ON 01-25-12 AT 12:53 PM (EST)Pepe, I hadn't heard that Cabrera agreed to go back to third. But my thoughts were the same as Max's. A weak defensive third baseman -- say, for example, a Cabrera -- will increase your ERA by at least half a run per game. For a team that relies so heavily on its pitching, Detroit just put a lot more pressure on it. The Red Sox ran into this problem last year when they signed Adrian Gonzalez. Kevin Youkalis had been a Gold Glove first baseman, but he wasn't a Gold Glove third baseman -- and he ended up getting hurt, which hurt the Sox even more because their right-handed power was almost exclusively Youkalis and Dustin Pedroia. But there just wasn't any defensive comparison between Youkalis and Adrian Beltre, who had been the Sox's 3B in 2010. To top it off, Gonzalez's HR power surprisingly DROPPED when he moved from cavernous Petco Park to Fenway, and he didn't hit any more HRs than Beltre had (in fact, I think he hit one less). But at least Youkalis was competent, if not exceptional like Beltre, at third. Cabrera could be replaced with a stone monument. He made 13 errors at FIRST base last year. Compared to Cabrera, Brandon Inge (a Mendoza-line hitter who was Cabrera's main replacement at third last year) looks like Brooks Robinson.
