"Most Valuable?"
The trophy for most valuable player in the NFL seemed destined to Aaron Rodgers who had a terrific season but yesterday should cost him some votes. Is Rodgers so valuable if his replacement can have a record day? Matt Flynn had nearly 500 passing yards and 6, SIX! TD passes!

I'd vote for Drew Brees myself. On the other hand, no one could argue that Peyton Manning was invaluable to the Colts. Can a player win in absentia?!

1. "RE: Most Valuable?"
You could make strong arguments for Matt Schaub, Darren McFadden and Matt Forte, as well as Peyton Manning. All their teams went into the tank once they were injured.

But, like you, I'd go with Drew Brees this year. The Saints, Packers and Patriots have to be three of the worst defensive teams, yet they finished with great records entirely due to their offenses. From the trio, I'd opt for Brees this year.

You are right about those three, especially Forte. However, the voters have such a bias towards QBs that I'm not sure he would have won even if he had stayed healthy, continued on the same pace and led the Bears to the playoffs.

Brees is unquestionably my pick for MVP this year and that stands solely on the fact that he did things this year as a QB that has never been done in the history of the league. Rodgers had an amazing year, but everything that he has done, we have seen better from others recently.

Schaub, although a crucial loss was just one of many losses that the Texans suffered, the same with Forte. The rushing production in Oakland did drop with McFadden out, but not as substantially as I though it would with Bush stepping up

One of my local sports radio talking invisible heads was discussing number separation -- how close Dan Marino was to the rest of the field in his record-setting year for passing yardage versus how close the pack was behind Brees for this one. Throw in the rule changes during the intervening years making it just a little harder to kill a quarterback without charges being pressed and Marino still feels like he pulled off the more impressive trick.

The rule changes to protect both the quarterback and the receivers is huge. Marino's record was much more impressive. But under the current rules, Brees has had a phenomenal year.

Personally, I'd give it to Peyton for just the reason you've stated.

I don't know about the MVP, but I nominate Chad Henne for LVP. When his most valuable contribution to the team was getting hurt...
