"Sidney Crosby"
So sad to hear that Sid is out indefinitely again with "concussion-like symptons". As a fan of him, and hockey in general, this is very bad news.

So now what? More rest and rehab? Or could this mark the end
of a short but spectacular career?? He can certainly afford to retire financially, and at only 24 he has already accomplished everything in hockey. Consider:
- 1st overall draft pick
- Stanely Cup
- Olympic Gold medal (and scored the winner in OT)
- World Junior Championships (Gold and Silver)
- Art Ross Trophy (scoring title)
- Hart Trophy (MVP)
- Lester Pearson (MVP voted by players)
- Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (most goals in a season)

So if this is the end for Sid as a player (and I hope it isn't), does he get into the Hall of Fame? I'd say yes. But I really really hope that he can recover and play again.

Yeah I've been seeing whispers that Sid may have to completely change his game - he might have to be used only on the powerplay for a while if he does come back in the near future.

The issue of concussions is rather troubling: Chris Pronger just announced to be out for the rest of the season (including playoffs) because of a concussion. The current NHL scoring leader, Claude Giroux, is now out with a concussion. David Perron just returned after missing a full calendar year due to a concussion and Patrice Bergeron came back last year after missing a year himself. Marc Savard is probably finished for his career after a severe concussion. Two Hall of Fame caliber players had to retire early because of concussions (Pat LaFontaine and Eric Lindros). And of the four former enforcers who died and had their brains donated for research, all four were found to have CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) - and this doesn't include Rick Rypien and Wade Belak as their results aren't back yet.

I saw a bit on the tube today that commented that by taking clutch and grab out of hockey (which was supposed to make it a better game) the game has become faster which leads to more concussions. There has been discussion about moving to larger ice surface to make the game better, but wouldn't that lead to more speed and more concussions?

Here is another interesting article posting the "All Concussion Team" of players who are out. Pretty good team!!

Chris Chelious was on a local station saying just that about clutching and grabing but it was also the taking out of self enforcement from the players. You just never could take a run at someone back them. He counted himself very lucky that he never got that feeling while playing but did once when he slipped and fell.

The major thing he wants is the helmets changed. He put on a Lion's helmet a few years back and asked how do you play with that much weight on your head and then he thought back to his days at Wisconsin where their helmets were just like that. Now they are paper thin and offer little protection. I guess Mark Messier helmet has been offered and pushed but no one likes the weight. He is pushing his kids (both playing for MSU) to wear it.

I think they need to mandate the new helmets in hockey.

I hope Sid plays again if he is able but I think it is unlikely. I have rep. people with concussions (who had the same docs as Sid) and the symptoms are nothing to ignore. The longer you have them the more likely they will be permanent. I was surprised by Sid coming back but not him leaving again.

Byo, I agree he goes into HOF

Just as a point of comparison with two guys who had relatively short careers - Cam Neely who made it into the HOF and Pavel Bure who's eligible for the HOF voting next time around:

Crosby - 420 GP, 217 G, 367 A, 584 Pts, 1.39 points per game, has Art Ross, Hart and Pearson trophies. Stanley Cup plus Olympic gold-medal winning goal.
Neely - 726 GP, 395 G, 299 A, 694 Pts, 0.95 points per game, has a Bill Masterton trophy.
Bure - 702 GP, 437 G, 342 A, 779 pts, 1.11 points per game, one Calder and two Rocket Richard trophies.

Won't even bother linking to Bobby Orr who only played 657 games but was absolutely peerless on defence.

Do I think that Crosby is finished? Nope, but he might have to be exclusively a PP specialist for a while, where there's far less hitting.
