PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

Mentioning Buck reminded me that the first not-him recipient of his Lifetime Achievement Award is going in this year: Roland Hemond. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Hemond My local sports talk radio station spent a happy twenty minutes listening to him tell stories of Back In The Day, including a wonderful bit about working with Bill Veeck in the notorious Open For Business hotel lobby trades for the ChiSox. Turns out they spent most of the meetings making calls to each other. There were six actual trades made while the other owners were screaming about the scandal of public swapping, but they wanted to make it look as if the line was always busy. There are probably at least twenty baseball lifers who wanted to unelect him on the spot.

Main entrance, sneak in through the side, ventilation ducts...*considers* Let's see: Baseball Writers election Veteran's Committee (also handles owners, umpires, managers, and executives) Lifetime Achievement (every three years, max) Special Committee (Negro Leagues, pre-70s, pre-war, created as needed) Broadcaster (Ford C. Frick award) I think that's all of them.

Advocating for Santo? I guess that was me. Jim Kaat, too, but half a loaf is better than none.http://tinyurl.com/85atsez Unlike most of you, I remember Santo as a player. Some people seem to be most impressed with how well he battled illness, like this ESPN columnist: http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7324080/ron-santo-election-hall-fame-shamefully-late ...but nobody deserves to be in the HoF because of their personal struggles. It's all on the field, or at least, it's supposed to be. And Santo lived up to that. He was always among the league leader in walks, because no one wanted to pitch to him with runners in scoring position; he led the league four times in walks and yet, during the 1960s, he was second to Hank Aaron in NL RBIs. His diabetes cut his career short. The Cubs let him go when he was only 33, and he retired at 34. But from 1963-70, when his defense started to slip, he was a great player on some lousy Cubs teams -- and a couple of very good ones at the end of that period.
