I can certainly understand the controversy surrounding comments like these from Jillian Michaels. Clearly, these are words spoken from a nulliparous woman, one that has never been pregnant. And, imo, an extremely ignorant one at that. I have had 4 children, one of which weighed 10#, and I got into better shape with each of my successive pregnancies all the way down the line. My first three kids were in my thirties, the last one eight years later at 42. I think women that use pregnancy as an excuse for getting out of shape are indeed way off the mark. Our bodies have a way of bouncing back incredibly. Pregnancy has nothing to do with slowing down metabolism, as we all know it raises it. Pregnancy may cause women to change their exercise routines a bit, but resuming them as per pre-pregnancy routines gets people right back in shape. Muscles can hypertrophy as they could pre-pregnancy with exercise and working out. Pulmonary function and cardiovascular function can be increased just as easily post pregnancy as pre-pregnancy. How many women that have had babies compete at world class status in the Olympics? A vast amount. If you ask me, peri-menopause is far, far more havoc wrecking on our physiques than pregnancy ever was. To me, Jillian still has alot of angst and anxiety/phobias surrounding her own childhood experiences, and should keep her opinions to herself. I'm sure if she were to have a pregnancy and labor/delivery, she would soon see just how smooth and phenomenal the transition for our body's can be. For gosh sakes, look at Allison Sweeney! And look at all the moms that have flown through the Biggest Loser...yeah, she's way off the mark on this topic, imo. As always, I'm sure the media got a hold of this comment and blew it out of proportion, let's face it, she has a right to her own opinions where she is concerned.
