Here is a bit from Lost's Damon Lindelof regarding the numbers:From Luv: How did you come up with the specific numbers for Hurley?
Damon: Well, that is a big secret, and we are not going to reveal it. I think there is a lot of interest in what the numbers mean and how we came up with them. But what's amazing to me is that we think we're being very clever and hiding those numbers all over the show, prior to the "Numbers" episode, and already I know there are Web pages that have gone up that bust us on every single one that we've ever hid, and they find ones that we didn't even intentionally hide, ones that are in sort of the production design of the show. The only number was always sort of a key number was 23, and anybody who knows anything about Robert Anton Wilson or any of his writing can read into that what they will. That's an important number in terms of the scheme of the show. In one reality Robert Anton Wilson is powerfully interesting, in the other reality Robert Anton Wilson is profoundly prosaic. I dare not try to merge the two realities for fear he will desintegrate upon meeting himself. ...oops

Eventually I read about the Illuminati in books by Robert Anton Wilson and its 23 connections, and how 23 was a discodian/Chaos number. http://www.eskimo.com/~icebrkr/23.html I started thinking about it, and just off the top of my head, the first two digits of my house number is 23, the last two digits of my phone number is 23, and the last two digits of my visa card is 23. *shiver*  edited to add: *cue Twilight Zone music* When I lived in Tampa the last two digits of my phone number was also 23. I was born in 1958 and 1 + 9 + 5 + 8 = 23
