PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"Fantasia, and The Baby Factor" |
Much has been said about Fantasia and her baby. Whether she brought the baby on the stage, or whether Ryan brought out the baby without her knowledge is one issue I don't much care about. But I'd like to bring up another point: Teen pregnancy is a big problem in America, and Fantasia now personifies the issue. To some folks she is not a good role model. I think her baby will hurt her chances of winning. Please don't lecture me on teen mothers, or what a great job Fantasia does, or how much support she has from her family. Don't tell me I'm hatin on her, or that I'm a racist. That's not why I started this thread.
Actually, scream at me all you want. I don't care, I'm just analyzing what I see on TV.
Josh Gracin's baby probably brought him votes, since it added to his "clean-cut All-American soldier with a beautiful blonde wife and a little baby at home while he was out saving the world" image. But beware, all you Fantasiacs. Some people will be offended by unwed teen mother status. She will lose votes every time that baby gets mentioned or shown. UNLESS, she provides the husband to go with it. I don't care much about the baby myself... but please don't wear the taco again.

I dont like Fantasia as a singer and I dont really care that she is a teen mother. I think she has an attitude every week and I cant wait for her to go. If she wins, uhhh.. no comment. I am going to catch alot of flak for this, but who cares.

Whovever designed this board has some attitude themself. I acccidently hit the edit button on someone else's post and it told me I could not edit the message because I don't own it. Anyway,it may be true that Fantasia is cocky but I like her. I like her because one thing she is not is fake. She seems to be very straightforward. Of course,I think she is a fantastic singer as well. However,I do not think anyone should jump on you for not liking her as long as her race or her baby are not factor for you and I think it was smart of you to say that you would not comment if she wins. That shows some character.

TJ, I am with you on this one. I don't think her baby is going to help her. I thought it was odd that Seacrust came out with the baby. However, I don't think it was a good idea.I don't like Fantasia's voice and I think she has a huge attitude that really gets under my skin. Her attitude goes beyond being confident to very arrogant. That won't win her any votes either! Just MHO! Director of Public Relations for GAWKUR!

It personally doesn't bother me that Ryan brought her daughter on stage. I do however, have to agree with the you in regards to teen/ unwed mothers. It does not present a positive message to teenage girls and boys, and this issue bothers alot of people, that may sway people from voting for her. She has great talent and a super voice, it shouldn't matter what she does in her personal life, but as we all know, when you become a star, your life becomes an open book.

When I had originally brought this up on another thread I was thinking that by bringing the baby out, they were trying to present her as a "softer soul", not the person who needs a good attitude adjustment. I thought it might win her votes. This has obviously turned out to be not true. She fell hard and fast. It seems that the general public did not accept her teenage mothrhood. Kudos to the voting public! Yes, I give her credit for accepting the responsibility of motherhood, but in a day and age where there are so many ways to prevent pregnancy (abstinance being #1) it is unacceptable and not the actions of a role model. Since it appears that so many kids are voting, it is refreshing to see that it is not accepted.

Personally I do not care for your judgemental attitude or the judgemental attitudes of others that may be penalizing her for being an unwed mother. There is one judge and He is God Almighty and I am very confident that He will judge the judgers with the same harsh judgement that others have judged Fantasia. Let him or her that hath no sin cast the first stone. Anybody remember or are familiar or agree with what Jesus, the only one worthy to judge, said? Besides, I thought all of us were supposed to be evaluating contestants based on their talents and not their sins. Hmmm. P.S. I know some may object to the religious language I am using but when people start judging folks based on their sins, what can one do but remind them what the source of their judging, the Bible, actually says? Take care.

LAST EDITED ON 04-28-04 AT 12:26 PM (EST)Personally I do not care for your judgmental attitude or the judgemental attitudes of others that may be penalizing her for being an unwed mother. There is one judge and He is God Almighty and I am very confident that He will judge the judgers with the same harsh judgement that others have judged Fantasia. Congratulations on your close connection with (I presume) the Judeo/Christian God. Personally, I've never met Him (Her? It?), but it's nice that you're able to speak for The Almighty. Anybody remember or are familiar or agree with what Jesus, the only one worthy to judge, said? Oops, scratch the "Judeo/" above. P.S. I know some may object to the religious language I am using but when people start judging folks based on their sins, what can one do but remind them what the source of their judging, the Bible, actually says? Take care. Why do you presume that they are judging based on the Bible? OK, all kidding aside, I don't care if posters want to base their posts on the Bible, the Torah, the Koran, the Bhagavad-Gita or any other religious document. But I do want them to remember that there isn't just one religion represented on this board. Reminds me of an old Oliphant cartoon from the 1980s, at a time when the Reagan administration was pushing for "elective prayers," claiming that students would be free during these prayers to worship as they saw fit: an elementary school classroom is filled with students with their heads bowed in prayer ... except for four at the back, dancing around a fire wearing Native American clothing. The teacher yells at them: "CLASS WILL CONFINE ITSELF TO THE ONE TRUE, ALL-AMERICAN, GOD-FEARING METHOD OF PRAYER!" In here, though, we don't confine anyone.

I have to wonder how someone with such strong religious convictions can justifiy to themselves watching "American Idol".The Bible is crystal clear on the subject of idol worship, and yet every week you congregate in front of the TV. You honor their talents and praise them to all who will listen. You offer up your votes and hope that your idol will be chosen the best in the land. LAST EDITED ON 04-25-04 AT 10:09 AM (EST)We've known that Fantasia was a mother since she reached the top 12. It certainly hasn't hurt her yet. While there may be people who won't vote for Fantasia because she is an unwed mother, I think there also going to be those who vote for her because she is. Some people are going to look at Fantasia as "overcoming" her struggles. Still others will vote for her because she has a cute baby. I remember that Nikki McKibben also played the baby card, and didn't she make it to fourth place? And she didn't have HALF the talent that Fantasia does! *Edited because I can't spell!

LAST EDITED ON 04-25-04 AT 11:42 AM (EST)Fantasia is making the best of her situation. It doesn't bother me one way or the other. She loves that child with all her heart. She is doing the best she can to see about her. That is a good example. We have no idea what lessons Fantasia might share with her following if she's crowned AI. I doubt she'd use her position to preach unwed pregnancy. I'm rarely swayed by one thing in any kind of election. Life and politics are too complex to get caught up in one single issue. I'm not a Fantasia fan simply because her bleating voice makes me cringe. ETA I meant to post under TJ's original post.

>She >makes no secret that her >daughter is the most important >thing in her life. >I don't think she's playing >it for the show, I >think she just loves her >daughter that much. But this is to say that parents who make a circus act out of their love for their children are the only ones who love their children. My parents love me enormously but neither one of them felt a need to haul me up in front of their peers and parade me around as if I were an item on their resume that indicated what good people they were, and I'm sure most ordinary people would say exactly the same thing about their parents. It is (or should be) an absolute given that parents love their children more than anything else in the world. Fantasia parading her offspring around on national telly as if that's a way to tell people, "Look how much I love my child! Aren't I a great person!" shouldn't garner her any more admiration than John Stevens going up there and saying, "I haven't murdered anyone's granny! Everyone vote for me over the other competitors in this contest who have not yet come out and demanded admiration for something we should all be able to expect from them!" The introduction of Fantasia's child was a marketing ploy. There is a good reason that politicians go around kissing people's babies at photo opportunities -- because with the kind of people who just don't have a very thorough thought process (aka the average dimwit), it doesn't hurt one's chances in the voting to appear kindly towards babies as a generic indication of "niceness". Whipping out the Baby Card during a competition is nothing other than a cynical attempt to garner votes and I am delighted that America seems to have indicated to Fantasia that they are not fooled by the utterly irrelevant factor that she cares for her own offspring. Having a child in anything but optimal circumstances for the child's well being is, unfortunately for those children, something that happens all the time but is never something to brag about. Fantasia may be a terrific mother, but like I said, that's not something to give her extra points for. That's something society has a right to expect from all women who choose to reproduce. Major points off for Fantasia, in my book, for thinking that America as a whole is dumb enough to play along with it. It's a singing competition. One's ability to reproduce (and let's face it, the vast, vast majority of us can do this just as well as Fantasia can!) shouldn't enter into it. And when someone drags it into the competition, they should be slapped for it via the vote.

I'm not convinced that the baby display was Fantasia's idea. As another poster mentioned, Fantasia seemed rather surprised when Ryan brought out her daughter and she didn't grab the baby, hold her up or smother her in kisses for DAW photo-ops. She seemed rather hesitant instead.Frankly, she gave her worst perfomance the night before, and I hope that had more to do with the outcome than the baby.

I suspect that the baby factor could do more to harm Fanstasia's chances than help. Next week, Fantasia and LaToya may try to pick up Jennifer's fans by channeling Jen's powerhouse style. LaToya would probably be more successful at that. Fantasia is fairly entrenched in her own style and manages to put her print on every song she sings. She is more likely to stay true to herself.

"UNLESS, she provides the husband to go with it. "Are you volunteering, TJ? I think Fantasia's biggest problem, is that she has the power to polarize the voting public. She seems to invoke strong reactions out of people...you love her or hate her. As we get down into the final numbers, this may wind up really hurting her. The teenage mother aspect certainly does nothing to enhance her "all american image". (This is where Kelly, Ruben and Clay, fit the bill) I think overall, people have already made up thier minds about her...The baby factor will add fervor to both camps in different ways: sympathy and disdain.

You said the right word. Image. For we do not know what any of these people do in their private lives. That is why I think it is really stupid to judge or praise people that you really do not know for having good or bad character. People really should stick to judging the contestants' talent. Judging them on other factors is just plain wrong and foolish,in my opinion.

When Fantasia was first told she was going to Hollywood, I didn't care for her at all. I don't like Macy Gray, and I thought she was very raspy and annoying. As time has gone on, though, she has shown more style, and she has grown a great deal as a performer. She is wearing showy clothes, her hairstyle is changing, and I kind of like her spunk. She may have had a bit of an attitude while Simon was giving it to her about her dress or her songs, but she didn't get downright rude with him - she just kind of bantered back at him. Even his remark about how he didn't think she ever put those lips to better service was playful, as is her reaction most of the time. I don't know that she'll get to first place, but I've grown to like her as a person. I don't know that I'd buy her CD though. Jennifer had grown a great deal, but now that she's gone, I can see where Fantasia has grown, too. I don't even dislike John as much as I used to, but I really hope the poor kid gets to go home soon. In all honesty, how are John or George supposed to get up on stage and try their best after the bashing they took last week? To be omitted completely from the positive remarks from the judges, and to have Paula and Randy on talk shows begging for America to wake up, wouldn't they almost want to pass on their turn? Hey, Greenmonstah, whattaya think of my signature? Thanks for your encouragement. (We gotta b*tch or we'll blow up!)

There ARE plenty of people who will judge her on talent alone. Hooray for them. But if talent was the only yardstick being used, we wouldn't have this final six. We know some voters make their choices for reasons of gender or skin color or birthplace, among the other moronic reasons we've seen on this board. Teen pregancy may not carry the shame it once did, but believe me, there are viewers who will vote against the unwed teen mother. In a tight contest, it could make a difference. It is not the image some people want for an "American Idol." Lastly, I don't need to wake up. Perhaps you need to go back and read what I wrote. I think I'm looking at this with a clear head and wide open eyes. I'm certainly not intimidated by a baby, by Fantasia, or by her rabid biased fans.

I so agree with you.....I think that since so much of the Idol audience is young, this is not the message to send out...it's kind of like, look, Fantasia had a baby at 17 and is on Idol, so it's ok...just my opinion... The biggest thing that bugged me that week was the overall impression of favoritism that I came away with....not only the bringing out of baby, but just the constant backstage shots of the whole family watching Fantasia on TV...we see brief clips of everyone else's family IN THE ACTUAL AUDIENCE after each performance, but I thought the attention on Fantasia and her family was quite excessive that week....

Have to agree with dkay. It may not be true, but it has appeared the judges were biased toward Fantasia. But I also saw the expression that a poster above noted, Fantasia seemed surprised and not all that pleased that the baby was on stage (the baby didn't look all that happy to be there either!). I don't really look at it as whether Fantasia should have a baby or not, but rather whether it is fair to try to manipulate viewer emotions, even though it seems to have backfired. On the one hand they are hollering "talent, talent" and on the other they are emphasizing things that have nothing to do with talent.

I disagree. I think that America's youth could greatly benefit from knowing that although having a baby as teenager out of wedlock and dropping out of scho ol are not good things, one can overcome the problems associated with those actions and be successful anyway. Fantasia,in spite of the judgemental attitudes of some,is a great role model of someone taking responsibility for their mistakes and perservering in spite of self made and outside obstacles(some of which presented by judgemental people) in their quest to be successful.

Okay let me say a couple of things.Like some of the other people on the thread has said. No one promotes kids before marriage. I have a 3 year old child and I'm not married however me and his father and now engaged and getting married next year. And no it's not because we have a son together we have been together for 7 years so we thought that it was about time to take the relationship to the next level. Everybody is doing what it takes to make a child but some people are not getting caught up like some of us are That is what is wrong with the USA today, we spend so much time trying to judge each other and not see that she/he made a mistake and is now learning from it. If that person had a child without being married then that it between God and that person. Who are we to Judge?? I have learned a valueable lesson that rising a child is nothing easy and its even hardly when you are trying to work full time and be a full time college student. At least she is trying to do something with her life and not just have babies after babies. Me,Fantasia and many other girls have faced our mistake and is now owning up to the responsibilities, instead of heading to the abortion clinic.

thisisit2004:I applaud your decision to have the baby, and I double the applause for your decision to marry the father. Those are great things, and I wish you and your family the best. And you say you are still attending college. You deserve a standing ovation for that! I also applaud Fantasia for her decision to have the baby, and wish her and the child well. But I do again want to emphasis a few points. You said "everybody is doing what it takes to make a child but some people are not getting caught up like some of us are." You know that's not true. Not every teenager is having unprotected sex. That is is a choice, with risks and consequences. Teen pregnancy is usually the result of some truly poor decisions made in passionate circumstances. And I'm sure you've experienced this: There is still a stigma that comes with unwed motherhood. Some people look at you with disdain. You say also that you and your husband-to-be want to take your relationship "to the next level." You have to admit that is not the traditional path of love, marriage, children. For many, having children is the top level. Deviating from that tradition bothers some people, particularly the deeply religious. Given a final two of LaToya and Fantasia, or Jasmine and Fantasia, or Diana and Fantasia; some people will find Fantasia less worthy because of her teen pregnancy. I am not condemning her personally, but just want to point out that it may affect the voting. And you ask: Who are we to Judge? The correct answer is, of course, we are not here to judge. But the truthful answer is: We are American Idol Voters!

Thanks for giving me some applaused. Making the decision to have the child and continue with my education had made me more mature and has also taught me alot of things. College itself is hard with being a nursing major and all just imagaine putting a baby with it. Kind of makes your head spend!!!When I first got pregnagnt the first thing I thought about was, what is everybody going to think of me at church? The main people who are teaching us not to judge are the main ones who look down on us. I know that having a child un wed is wrong please believe me when I say that it will never happen again. Nothing is 100% safe against pregnancy but don't do it!!! So I say again everyone is having sex with or without a condom. You are still at a risk!!! "Teen pregnancy is usually the result of some truly poor decisions made in passionate circumstances." Right, at the time it feels so right b/c of the feelings. When the girl becomes pregnant the first thing that she thinks about is what is everybody going to say, how are they going to look at me, I don't want anybody to look down on me or think different about me. I think that America should stop critizing teen moms and condemned them for owning up to the responisblities!!!

Well I can tell you I'm old enough to actually spell the word "you" as opposed to using "u". Having sex before marriage is wrong, if you are going by the bible. . This is where I say that your statement is your opinion. It's your opinion that sex before marriage is wrong because you're "going by the bible." I don't follow the same path as you therefore I do not hold the same opinion. Please ask your parents and see what they say about it It's been quite some time since I've had the sex talk with my parents, but if it will make you feel better, I'll call my mother. She'll get a pretty big kick out of it. --follows theticks example and laughs

I can tell you that I used to be a deeply religious Christian myself and I never judged people the way some of the people on this board and off this board have judged Fantasia. It is not deeply religious people that go crazy judging folks. It is the self righteous hypocrites that are living a lie but pretending to be Holy that are the most judgemental people of all. I guess they feel that if they spend their time tearing down other people, people will not see the crap that they do or will not realize just how sinful they truly are. People like that remind me of the story of the Pharisee and the common man. All the Pharisee could do was talk about how Holy he was and how unholy the other man was but all the poor man could is admit to God how sinful that he was. Well, when the praying was done,it was the common man that was vindicated while the Pharisee remained a most pathetic example of a unrepentant and judgemental sinner. Anybody want to continue bashing Fantasia for her sins now? And yes I realize that other people on this board may be atheists or or other religions besides Christianity but if you do not get my point, you are kind of dense. Take care.

Ant: I'm not exactly sure who you're responding to with this post but I'm going to respond directly to you with mine. The point of this whole thread was to discuss the issue of Fantasia being an unwed mother and that it might factor in to some peoples votes. That's what we've been discussing. There are people out there that will look at Fantasia and not vote for her simply because she's an unwed mother. And whether she's a good singer or not, that may cost her the competition. (if of course the "unwed mothers are sinners" faction care enough about it to vote over and over for someone else. In my initial response to thisit2004, I said that I didn't agree with the judements that would vote against her. Meaning those what would use her unwed mother status as a sinner, as the reason to not vote for her. I agreed with TJ that it might be a factor. (which again is the point of the thread). So far the only "judgements" I've seen on this board are from you and thisit2004 judging those of us who agreed with TJ in the first place. (which wasn't "judging" Fantasia, simply bringing up the topic in the first place). In case you think that what you wrote isn't "judging" read what you wrote again: It is the self righteous hypocrites that are living a lie but pretending to be Holy that are the most judgemental people of all. I guess they feel that if they spend their time tearing down other people, people will not see the crap that they do or will not realize just how sinful they truly are. and And yes I realize that other people on this board may be atheists or or other religions besides Christianity but if you do not get my point, you are kind of dense. That is judgement (just so ya know). Oh and yes, I do get your point. I know exactly what you're saying. Do you? Anybody want to continue bashing Fantasia for her sins now? Continue bashing Fantasia? Sure, that's what I'm here for, to praise and bash all of the contestants. For what you consider her "sins"? Nope, I don't consider peoples sins, it's not my business. Besides, you have to actually believe in the word "sin" (in the judeo/christian sense of the word anyway) in order to even consider it. Which I don't. --hopes this clears things up and we can get back to the original topic at hand

Well, mist,it is not judging if you are right in what you are saying. It is telling the truth. I think it should be quite obvious that whoever has judged Fantasia is not quite right themselves. Otherwise, they would not be so hard on her or anyone else. Everybody makes mistakes. It is those that dwell on and penalize others for their mistakes that prove themselves to not be of such character themselves. I am not talking about penalizing people for criminal offenses of course. Maybe you will say that is judging too but I say that is telling it like it is. And yes, some people will allow the fact that she has had a baby out of wedlock to influence how they vote. I am just glad that it appears that there are not currently enough folks judging her to seriously hinder her chances of winning at this point. She is better off than she was last week, that is for sure. Take care.

it is not judging if you are right in what you are saying. That's why you have no credibility in this argument, or on this board. You are judging others when you say we have no right to be so judgmental, and then insist you are the only righteous person in the discussion. This holier-than-thou attitude has made you a laughing stock. Apparently you have a real problem with people finding fault with the contestants, particularly Fantasm Burrito. And you refuse to address the actual point of the thread, which is that some people are sickened by teen pregnancy and unwed motherhood. And it will affect the voting. If you can't stand the critcism of unwed motherhood, or any other personal failings among those who put themselves in the public eye, then I don't think this is the right web site for you. We are unabashedly judgmental, and you will not change that. Good luck with the rest of your life. These reality show contestants need a reality check!

Pooh:I trust you understand my original point, which was that Fantasia's baby might cost her votes because some folks will dislike her unwed mother status. I'm not casting stones, just trying to point out the stones are there. In a final two with LaToya, where we've all seen this heading for weeks, Fantasia's baby could be a negative factor for the religious right. Fantasia's sex life doesn't really matter much to me, but she's the only contestant where that's become an issue. She's certainly not squeeky clean. (Just squeeky.) We don't know much about LaToya, or Diana. And for all we know, Jasmine's an unrepentant slut. She did break up with her boyfriend just before the finals, and then told 30 million viewers she needed a real man. One more thing. My 14-year-old son's friend is an only child, and I found out recently that her mom was an unwed teen mother. She did a great job and her daughter is a beautiful person. I have nothing but cheers for unwed moms who choose to keep the baby and raise them well. Of course, I have nothing against unrepentant sluts. They are my favorite kind. Plus, now that we know all this "unrepentant... skanky" stuff about Princess Poho, maybe I can get me a little honey!

Personally, I couldn't care less about her motherhood, single or not. I do find her rather low-rent, but I thought that before the show shoved her baby in my face. Why do I find her rather low-rent? Well, I can assure you that it is not race. I have found several white contestants (most notably Kim Caldwell, Nikki McKibbin) to be low-rent, also. It's just an almost indefinable thing about how a person carries him/herself, reacts to criticism and praise, presents themselves publicly, and performs. It can vary from person to person and has nothing to do with social class, economic class, race, or gender. Latoya London has it, Fantasia does not.I agree that there are many voters who will not like the fact that Fantasia is an unwed mother. Because I think that does not mean that I am making a moral judgment about her or any other unwed mother. She just may get the entire unwed mother vote. And good for her. She just won't get mine but her motherhood is not a factor. Her style of singing, her style of clothing, her way of carrying herself, her attitude on the show are the things that make me dislike her. She turns me off completely and did before I ever knew anything about her private life.

Well, sometimes when I've had a couple of drinks, I sound pretty good...Actually, just wanted to add, without starting whole new thresd, that I think the Shout Out to Jennifer didn't help her much, either. Seemed awkward. Plus, Jennifer is not DEAD or anything. Fantasia's gesture came off like a lighter version of the Biggie tributes.
However, I think she has talent and should still finish among the top 3. "Any government that would deny a gay man bridal registry is fascist." Margaret Cho

I think it was a mistake to bring Fantasia's baby on stage from both sides. It gives the anti-teen mother folks an extra reason to vote against her. OR It makes her look like she's pandering for votes by trying to soften her image with the look-at-my-cute-baby move and helps her get the "wow, she's really overcoming the odds" vote. I'm a big Fantasia fan. I hope she wins. But I think it was wrong for Ryan to bring her baby out on stage because either way it's going to bring out some sort of "extra" reaction from the voting audience that the other contestants won't get. Show the families from the audience, but don't give one contestant an advantage or disadvantage over the other by doing small things like this that could influence the vote. Not to mention, I thought Ryan's comments the night Jennifer Hudson got booted to be entirely inappropriate, the whole "letting talent like this slip through the cracks." I didn't want Jennifer to go that night either, but he is dissing the other contestants by insinuating that she should still be there but somebody else should not. Who exactly should have went that night, Ryan?? Why don't you just come right out and say it?? I didn't mind so much the comments he made this week at the beginning of the show about all the e-mails and phone calls they received --- because he said it was up to us, the viewers, to keep our favorite contestants in the contest and there's nothing they could do about it. But the previous week his comments were quite pointed and barbed and were entirely inappropriate. It's these little things that are done to influence the voters that really annoy me.

Banana, thanks for some rational discussion. I wondered at the time if Fantasia had really been surprised to see the baby on stage. It did seem calculated on somebody's part. While I did not know Fantasia was a mom, I don't think it softened her image much if that was in fact the intent. I think most people either like her or dislike her just on her personality. And whomever decided that baby belonged on stage probably didn't consider any backlash. And you are right about the unecessary extra reaction from both sides. It brings something other than talent to the voting, and there's enough sideshow already. Ryan ought to be slapped around for the amateurish way they handled the George choice of group A, group B; and then slapped around again for the "how could you vote out Jennifer and keep these losers" speech. He's made his career on this show, but I don't see him succeeding elsewhere. He's smarmy, vile and inept. These reality show contestants need a reality check!

LAST EDITED ON 05-01-04 AT 10:07 AM (EST)Joisey --- I agree with your comments about the way George was "shuttled" between group A and B that night as well --- it was embarrassing.....obviously, everyone thought "A" was the winner group and "B" was the loser group and to then pull a switcharoo at the last second was once again an insult to the "B" group, that they could never be the top vote getters. While I like the way they've done both the A, B, and C group divisions, I don't think they should play around with who is who --- just announce it and move on. And one other complaint about Ryan -- LOL -- anybody else find it rude that he asked John if he was "relieved" to be voted out?? Anybody else remember him asking any other contestants that question?? And in John's "finale" package, the Jennifer Hudson vote out was featured as a clip as John's voiceover was saying something like "each week it's been harder and harder at the elimination round" -- um, if I remember correctly, John wasn't even IN the bottom three the week Jennifer got booted, so WHY did they even show it unless to address the controversy and insinuate that John should have been gone the week Jennifer was gone? I thought that was totally rude. Ryan is an @ss this year and the producers are making some really horrible choices when it comes to some of their production decisions. Shedevil --- you may vote only based on vocal talent, but unfortunately, there are many many people out there who are not. I specifically know people who won't vote for Fantasia because she is too "ghetto," to use their word. And not trying to bring up the whole John Stevens controversy again, but there are people who admitted that the backlash he received each week from the judges and other fans made them want to vote for him, and I got the feeling that was whether or not they really thought he was the best singer. So all the little extra things do count and it's unfair to use them to an advantage or a disadvantage for particular contestants.
It shouldn't matter that Fantasia has a baby out of wedlock, but the truth is, is that it will matter to some people. Yes, it was included in her initial package, but not very prominently. I didn't realize it until a few weeks ago when I happened to read it in some article on AI contestants. I personally don't pay close attention to the contestant packages they put together at the beginning of the season because I find them to be a total bore. lol

Some people feel that teenage pregnancy is morally wrong. Some people feel that our "American Idol" should be someone we'd like to see people emulate. And some people feel that an unwed teen mom is not an "American Idol." And those people may not wish to see Fantasia win. So they might not vote for her. And that might affect the voting. Of course, as someone else pointed out, maybe she'll get the "aww, cute baby" votes and the whole thing will cancel out. But if you've read the whole thread, it boils down to a pretty simple premise: Right or wrong, Fantasia's status as an unwed teen mother will cost her votes.

Hi Shanana. I disagree. I think that Ryan Seacrest was not only right in what he said but that he had the right to say it. If voters let themselves get influenced by his words, then so be it. That is on them. However,it is my feeling that his words probably galvanized those who did not vote to do so. As you well know,Ryan said that a record number of people voted last week and this time the voters pretty much got it right. I owe that in part to Ryan and the fact that apparently a lot of folks agreed with his salty comments.

LAST EDITED ON 05-01-04 AT 08:57 PM (EST)Hi Ant. I don't think as the supposed neutral host of a TV show that Ryan has the right to try to influence how people vote. He does have every right to try to galvanize the masses --- I would have preferred him to say something like: Hey, folks, if you wanted Jennifer here, she'd be here. Ya gotta vote to keep people in -- don't get lazy! Sure, motivate people to participate, but not at the detriment of the other contestants. That's what I thought was wrong. It's just simply unfair to play favorites, or insinuate that someone should be there over someone else (even if they should be.) That's OUR job, not his. It's not what he said, it's the way he said it. He could have gotten across his same message and even been "salty" about it (lol) without pointing invisible fingers.

LAST EDITED ON 05-01-04 AT 04:01 PM (EST)I had an internal debate with myself after the results show aired that week, and I concluded that some people would not vote due to the baby issue, but she would also get some "cute kid" votes. I figured it would probably be a wash. UDG Is this an anti-thread-jack?

Do I start with agreeing that people who are "turned off" by Fantasia being a single parent are "narrowed minded"? Or do I point out that in the next sentence he/she says that "it might not be right to be a single parent". Do I ask the poster how he/she not being "bothered" by the baby in any way translates to my own personal opinions or tell the poster to get ready for millions and millions of phone calls, emails and PM's because now that we all know we don't have to think for ourselves, we'll be looking to him/her for answers to daily questions like, do I want tea or coffee? Do I agree that it seems that Fantasia cares deeply for her child and is holding up well under the pressures of single parenthood especially in the limelight that is American Idol or do I point out that just because someone has a child that they're willing to have trotted out in front of america during a singing competition doesn't confirm or "show that fantasia is a loving mother" off camera. Or should I simply roll my eyes and tell kittykat welcome to RTVW. --hasn't quite decided yet

Why do some of you feel the need to be so hard on Fantasia? Perhaps folks want the winner of the title "American Idol" to be someone Americans can idolize, or at least feel good about. For a large part of the viewership, Fantasia lacks the qualities needed to be an "American Idol." It's more than the music. I will never understand the need of some people to put others down who have never directly harmed them or theirs in any way, shape, form, or fashion. Part of entering this contest means opening yourself up to criticism. No one dragged her to auditions. Professional recording artists are constantly criticized, as are actors, athletes, writers and oboe players. Is it possible for you to consider that Fantasia winning the title of American Idol is offensive to some people? These reality show contestants need a reality check!

Well i would just like to say about the baby factor that fantasia will win this competion if she had a baby or not and i would just like to add that i live in the united kingdom and we had a show called pop stars. There was this girl called kim who got through all the auditions and made it into the band. Then comes the scandel in the papers the next day it was about kim who has got two children and everybody in the nation wanted to no why she had kept them a secret, she said because she thought it would go agaisnt her getting in the band. So my point is if you have children or not you can achive anything you want and iam surpised at the american nation if they dont vote for fantasia for her talent and because she is a young mother who is not married all she wants is a better life for her baby and i say she can do it the best way she knows how SINGING!!!!!!!!!!

This is so pathetic. Did you fail to notice that Fantasia made the final four? That was because people liked her and voted for her. DUH! She still can win this but please accept not everybody likes her singing! You may think she is just all that but not everybody thinks she is talented. Different people like different things. If she looses she looses. Accept it. It is a competition.

Yes Teamjoisey, you may have a valid point about the way people perceive Fantasia ,but I dont think it really matters. The Idol phenomena is a talent contest where performance and personality really do take over..from what I saw I thought Fantasia had both of these in abundance...a worthy winner. Because teen pregnancy is a huge issue, not only in the U.S might I add,Fantasia has proved it not to be a detterent to success! If any thing I think she would have reached out to many who are or have been in her situation-to strive for greater things in their lives. That can only be positive in my view.Any body else out there agree ?Tell us your viewpoint..
