I agree. They obviously have something against R/A. Not sure if it is from Survivor or TAR but they need to move on. Their whole act is getting on my nerves. It could be editing but they don't seem to be nice people. The do treat each other well though. That's about the only good thing I can say about them.

Well, Rob did make it quite clear that he is a bit of a homophobe during his first season on Survivor during a confrontation that he had with John, the male nurse. So, it could be a combination of the general dislike for Romber exhibited by many of the Racers and a particular dislike based on Rob's previous attitude toward gay people.Whatever it is, I agree that they should focus more on their own game and leave the Romber bashing to the rest of us.

I can understand where you are coming from, Tahj.I refuse to like Lynn and Alex just because they happen to be gay. I'm not going to cheer for the gay team any more than I would cheer for a white team, a young team, an all-male team, or any other team that shares my personal attributes. I had an initial knee-jerk negative reaction to Lynn and Alex. "Are these really the gay guys that I want representing me to the rest of America?" I asked myself. I thought about it for a while and realized that yes I do want Lynn and Alex on the television, whether they make me - or others - uncomfortable or not. A couple seasons ago we got to see Chip and Reichen, two athletic gay guys, win the Amazing Race and I was glad to see them demonstrate that not all gay guys fit a particular stereotype. But, dammit, I'm not going to force every gay guy on reality television to be slome sort of model queer, the gay ambassador to red state America. Lynn and Alex have just as much right to be both respected and bashed for who they are as anybody else. If I can't find it in my heart to be accepting and tolerant of Lynn and Alex, how can I expect the rest of "mainstream" America to look at gay people as just people? Yes, I worry that Lynn and Alex will reinforce stereotypes because some viewers are not critical enough in their assessment and think that they are substitutes for all gay men. But others won't. I refuse to think that all middle-aged mothers are shrews like Patrick's mommy; not all white guys are abusive and ageist like Ray; and not all older women talk as much as Gretchen. That being the case, why should I think that all gay guys act like Lynn and Alex...?

Very well said HD. Your attitude is quite rational. Lynn and Alex happen to be gay, but much of their behavior has nothing to do with that, I think. There will be some guilt by association, however, and it will reflect negatively on gays in general. But you're right, not everyone will think that way. My cringe meter goes off the scale when I watch them and I find it embarrassing, but that's my problem, not necessarily anyone else's. I wish I had your attitude. It would make it much easier for me.

Yeah, considering that a few weeks and several off-color comments (no pun intended) have taken place since I wrote the post you are referencing, let me clarify that I accept Lynn and Alex despite their flamboyance which might make me uncomfortable at times (partially because it is so over the top and partially because it might be a little bit of a reflection of me). I would not encourage anybody, however, to accept Lynn's ignorant and intolerant views of other people, whether they be Racers or locals (and I sincerely hope that those attitudes are not a reflection of me at all).Flamboyance = not necessarily bad
Racism = get Lynn off my TV and expand his social circle a little (or a lot)

I think L/A secretly have crushes on Rob ala HS - I like that girl so I'll be extra annoying to her. Maybe they want Romber to notice them, which would make them special.

Gaining fame from being on a reality show is one thing. Gaining fame from being a prisoner of war in Iraq is quite another. Gaining fame from being a beauty queen is...eh, never mind.I think L/A secretly have crushes on Rob ala HS Trust me. Very few gay men fall in love with straight men, especially when (a) they're already in a committed relationship or (b) the man in question has made homophobic comments in the past. 
Plus, like the posters above said -- Rob's not that cute.

Hi!Hmm... well I don't think Romber being confident about themselves is close to being worse than teams who call them an STD or someone speaking harshly about old people. So far, they haven't said bad things about other people and yet people make such biting remarks like the STD and "dumb as a rock" thing about them. Originally, I thought I would dislike Rob and Amber because of many of the posters here and since they were on Survivor (A show that I haven't cared enough to watch), but Rob and Amber's good naturedness and lack of whining won them over for me. Things could always change, but they are playing the game and not focusing their dislike for anyone in particuar.

Pompous remarks are a far cry from mean spirited way L/A handle themselves. Of the three comments you mentioned two were general comments and not aimed at any team or disparaging any team. The third was actually said to their faces without regard to the consequences. Is there something wrong with being confident on TAR? Do all the teams have to be humble to be accepted? When L/A walk up to Romber and make a comment like the STD one, to their face, then I may have a little more respect for them.

Agreed - L/A are getting more and more annoying with their focus on Romber and their constant mean remarks about Romber. They were previously top on my love list, but are gradually slipping too on my list. No, there's nothing wrong with confidence... but there's confidence, and then there's arrogance. The difference is subtle, but still there. Kris and Jon from the last season were confident about the way they raced. Romber... well, Rob in particular... have reeked of arrogance since their Survivor days. That's why I don't really like them. Having said that, the arrogance is a lot more toned down compared to Survivor, and in particular, S4. I am (grudgingly) starting to respect them more and more.

for anotherkim and tahj!so let me start the Lynn/Alex bashing again: my gay friends who watch TAR with me hate them too. they wouldn't want to be friends with them cuz they feel they have a mean streak in them. nevermind the whining cuz my gay friends say they like whining all the time cuz it makes them feel better. so coming from a straight guy who hangs/works with gay men we all saw it from the start of the race. Lynn and Alex are trying too hard to play the "entertaining gay couple" role we have seen in past seasons that thay are over compensating. Because they aren't as interesting as the other gay racers in the past. hence they are incredibly ANNOYING! and they do have a mean streak in them. but unlike (place racer flavor of the month here) who shows what he truly is, they pretend that they're all good intentioned and all. hypocrites. oh and my gay clothing designer friend is telling me now to type in that they don't even dress well. he feels misrepresented and wants them to be eliminated asap. they don't provide any more entertainment value than the rest of the racers aside from (type in racer who must not be named here).

one of many that cracked me up.But I'm on the Lynn/Alex bashing bandwagon. (I sorta mentioned
them in passing when I posted in the Susan/Patrick thread.) I brought up that the Happy Boys are losing favor with me due
to the Romber obsession they seemed to have picked up from
Patrick. Before Lynn and Alex went into "Must destroy Romber!" mode, I
really enjoyed them. Now, they're turning into my new Villain
Team. They're still amusing, but now they've added incredibly
annoying into the mix.

Have bashed Racers many times before in Fanatics for example, and praised others in Bashers. Nobody has made a big deal of it in the past, so being a relatively new poster, I didn't think it was that big a deal either. But since it seems like a HUGE deal to you, then I'll stop bashing Romber in this thread now. Believe me - I really did get carried away and just forgot what the thread was about. Thanks for the reality check - in bashing Romber, I've come out sounding as whiny as Lynn/Alex. So I don't think I could in all good conscience join in bashing whiny Lynn/Alex! (though my like of them is slipping lower and lower too)... not for the moment anyway...

It's just that EVERY time we try to talk about any team other than Rob and Amber, it always comes back to how evil Rob and Amber are and that just leads to the ugly bickering about them that is never going to accomplish anything. Unfortunately for all the gay teams they live under the shadow of the original gay team(sorry I can't remember their name). The difference between originals and L/A was that they loved just being in on the game. They were fun to watch. Nearly getting eliminated every week but somehow pulling through and having a great time doing it. IMO they were roll models, not just for gays, but for everyone.
I also remember there was one girl team that knew they were last so the had dinner and took their time.
It's too bad that L/A and most of the other teams don't seem to have this attitude. I completed an entire post and I didn't even mentioned ... whew.

I've hated these two since week one. So I am thrilled to have found a place to vent about this. I don't get their obession with Romber. The game is called the amazing race, and the point is to race around the world the fastest. Your goal should not be to beat any one team it should be to beat all the teams. Stop obsesseing about what Romber is doing and pull your heads out of each others arses long enough to play the game. Otherwise you'll both be gone faster than you can say.... well I don't know what exactly.... but my point is that you'll be gone super fast.... not that that is a bad thing at all. I would actually really like it if you were gone.

Hardly. Lynne and Alex are like the rash that just won't go away. At first it's just a harmless itch and the scratching is strangely pleasant. But soon it gets more enflamed and you're ready to cut off your arm just to be rid of it.
Sure, I can jump on board with everyone else and say I'm SO over Romber and the "win at all costs" attitude. Editing aside, ignoring the wreck without somuch as a window roll-down or even saying, "I hope they're all right." The crack about Meredith pushing Gretchen down was really low, too. Great t.v., bad for the space-time continuum as they continue to upset the balance of the earth with evil. BUT...I really have to say I'm totally over Lynn and Alex. I usually root for the gays and the oldsters (I'm in the former group now and will eventually be in the latter, so I have to have some empathy--there but for the grace of god go I...). But GIMME A BREAK! I thought Reichen and Chip were awesome (and cute) and of course Team Guido rocked. But mincing and flailing aside (and tired, stereotypical bit**y quotes that aren't even funny) their racist, insensitive comments were really over the top. They come from West Hollywood, which isn't really too far from Compton (geographically, anyway). It makes me think of the scene in Hairspray when Penny Pingleton's mother is dropped off in the "colored" part of Baltimore and she clings to her purse, screaming and cowering (sorry for those of you who haven't seen it, but you really must). They really need to get a better sense of social conscience--how ironic for them. What an embarrassment! Go back to the safety of Maxfield and Hamburger Mary's and leave the rest of the world to others. On the OTHER hand--what a great job Gretchen and Meredith did (even though luck had a lot to do with it). When I think about Marshall and Lance (and the whining about the knee and quitting) and Hayden's whining about her sore fingers, what an awesome thing to see Gretchen pushing on. Don't know how long they'll hold out, but more power to them!

Lynn in particular can't come up with enough bad things to say about Romber This reminds me of something I wanted to ask. Rob said something that struck me, something about "Lynn may be able to work Alex but not me." I have a bad habit, when it comes to same-sex teams, of meshing them together in my mind and not really differentiating one from the other (I did the same with Brian/Greg, Debbie/Bianca, the hillbillies). I think it's because of the fast-paced nature of the show, plus a lot is done in voice-over and it's hard for my brain to register which voice is which that quickly. But it's kind of funny. If you look at critiques of teams, you'll see a lot of splits among the opposite-sex couple teams (Jonathan=abusive/Victoria=victim, Rob=cunning/Amber=indecisive, Ray=see Jonathan/Deana=see Victoria, Hayden=shrew/Aaron=doormat, etc.) whereas same-sex teams are considered more as a unit. Honestly, if I put up a picture of Brian/Greg, how many of you could tell which is which? I couldn't. Or to those who could: What personality trait makes Greg different from Brian? My main question is this, however. To those who've paid better attention: Is Lynn substantially more obnoxious than Alex?
You've enlightened me to this. I'm going to start paying better attention.

I think Greg's face is a little fuller, but you can't see that if they have their backs to the camera.Lynn and Alex seem equally obnoxious to me, but in different ways. Yeah, I was basing my observations on the scholarly works I've read for Gender Studies courses.Gay culture, from experience, can have its own strange little twists and turns - as you probably know as well. Personally, I always laugh at the gay guys who insist that their partner be "straight acting," whatever that means. If he's too "straight acting" (pronounced "self-loathing") then their sex life is going to be non-existent. Lots of people made assumptions about who was the pitcher and who was the catcher about my ex and me - based on nothing other than who was taller! That being the case - and to get back on topic - I wouldn't even hazard a guess about the particulars for Lynn and Alex, any more than I want too know what happens privately for Gretchen/Meredith, Crashboy/Lardette, or Romber.

Lynn is definately more cutting and nasty in his remarks than Alex.
I think he has been portrayed as the "leader" in the team. Most teams seem edited with one member more dominate, by their quotes. ( That is not to say that the editing is really how these teams relate at home, just how they are portrayed for TV , as one member in the "leader" role.) But yes, I think Lynn comes across as more obnoxious.

I don't think Rob is a jerk, I think he has a very dry, sarcastic wit and doesn't take himself too seriously. Not nearly as seriously as everyone else seems to take him.

Ahhh, the Cab.
So am I the only one who wished that L&A had been honest and said, " Rob, we don't want to share a cab with you! Our cab, kiss off!"
Instead of saying, " There's NO Room!"?Seriously, why not say they didn't want him in their cab?
It's a race, they could have just said that.
Rob thought it was a bus, it looked like a bus.
But Lynn claimed there was no room, instead of stating the truth, which was that it was their cab, and they got to it first. If you are going to be agressive, be agressive, not screechy passive agresssive. " No Rob, no Rob, no room!" The high and mighty statement, (as they drove away) about how they would have shared with anyone but Rob, was dumb. There was no one but Rob asking for a ride, so it's easy to say. Plus it's a race, so they would be justified in refusing a cab share with any other team as well.
Just shows their character.

Lynn said something about Uchenna and Joyce that really hit a nerve. As Uchenna and Joyce were doing so well with the carrying objects on their heads.Lynn said to Alex that Uchenna and Joyce's kind of people were born to carry things on their heads. OUCH! Lynn said: "They were born to do this" They never said anything about Black people, African people or what not, just 'they.' There was also no scorn or contempt in L&A' voices. I'm gonna give them a pass on this. I thought the Compton comments were ugly, but saying they were 'born to do _' of somebody who is stellar at a task' is a pretty generic compliment. Like someone is a 'born gymnast' or Ian McKellan was 'born to' play Gandalf or whatever sports star was 'born to the game' Another thing to consider is that Lynn and Alex made the 'born to' comment because Uchenna and Joyce have excellent senses of balance and so something like the head balance would fit right in with their natural abilities. Uchenna can do running backflips, which requires an excellent sense of balance and Joyce has been shown doing roundhouse kicks and pivots with no problem. That sort of balance is a gift and you can be 'born to it' just like with any other sense. It's called kinesthetic awareness and scientists count it as a genetic thing

Now the instant that Rob looks good by comparison, I have 2 people jumping down my throat about Rob and Amber, and not Lynn and Alex: THE SUBJECT OF THE THREAD. No, I don't give Lynn and Alex a pass for the comment about Meredith and Gretchen, but I was addressing the 'racist or not' comment about U&J, so that's what I did. Unlike some other people I could think of, I don't have to excuse and justify every single nasty thing a team does

Let's see...They're in Africa, doing a task that is readily identifiable as the normal routine of Africans, Uchenna and Joyce are African-Americans, and Lynn coincidentally thinks they just happen to be generically "born to do it"? I doubt that seriously.And the comment didn't sound terribly flattering as I heard it. As I wrote on another thread, the comment was voiced out of frustration with their own efforts, not observationally at the relative talents of U/J. Lynn says these things in situations where their own failure is hanging over them, whether it be getting lost in Johannesburg or an inability to balance baskets on their heads.  Fester

(#85)I took the use of the word "girl" to be slang as commonly used in some segments of the gay community. Lynn and Alex also use the word "bitch" a lot, when talking about men and women. They are playing with the words by putting a new gender valence on them.
