"Tonight's show"
OK, I don't want to spoil it for the left coasters, so I'll do my best to add enough filler before I put in my two cents on what happened during tonight's show.

Blah blah bleah bleah blah blah blah

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Where did they get that bunch of freakin' idiots for that audience? Did they clear our the coma unit of the local hospital? That one-note, uncreative pigeon Oriental was not funny, especially up against Dave.

I hate this damn show.

1. "NO."
It was beautiful. It was justice.

The look on that bastige Vos' face was well worth the price of admission.

You GO, Dat Phan!!! THANK YOU for crushing Dave and making Vos' look not unlike a damn fool!!!

Dat Phan started out well, but did taper off, and I thought he might lose. Dave's stuff was not particularly funny to me, although he did have one good line in there.

But just seeing these hatemongers have to take the defeat of Dave at the hands of Dat Phan was beautiful.

4. "RE: NO."
I don't get what you mean by "hatemongers" Dawg.
I mean , they didn't dislike Dat because he was Asian. They didn't like Dat because he was Dat. The guy is a goober, a one tone act and OCD to boot.

I am just unclear how thinking Dat was a no talent jerk, becomes hatemonger.

I actually think Comedians are less likely to be racist,( if racist is what you meant) they work with stereotypes and not against them. Comedians are students of human nature, they make us see ourselves, and all our faults through the eyes of humor.

I think Dat's Humor was more racist.

I said NOTHING about race or racism, and I bitterly resent your implication that I did. I neither said nor implied anything to suggest that Dat Phan was hated for his ethnic background.

I guess if I say I don't think Tess is very funny, you'll be accusing me of racism against blacks, too!?!?!

Sheesh!

2. "RE: Tonight's show"
DAMMIT!!!!!!!

Dave is a thinking persons Comedian. Dat is a quick giggle.

We have to remember that the audience heard Dat for the first time, and isn't yet sick of his same old schtick. His ethnic thing is old. Dat is taking advantage of the fact that the audience liked that they were able to laugh at Asian culture without seeming racist.

I have to say that as soon as Dat started in with that ridiculous Asian sterotype voice that I knew he had it won. Very sad. Making fun of his parents ethnicity is funny once, but if that is his only act ( all we have seen) then it begins to get mean. Not that mean humor isn't funny to me, just Dat's mean humor isn't funny to me. It is just too easy. ( Hell, even I could do 10 minutes on my Mom, and make it funny)

More talent then Dave? NO WAY! Staying power? HUH? Forget it!
You gotta give to Dat that he works hard and manipulates his audience though. Doesn't make him more talented.

Oh and Vos is gonna make Dat's life miserable in the house. ( hope they show it to us) I am not sure what I think of Vos yet, I am torn, the guy can be an ass, but he can be very funny too. Dave on the other hand was my favorite.
Dave has real talent. That talent will take him far.

What a crappy ending to this episode, I really was tired of Dat.

3. "I will never watch this show again!"
That was the biggest joke I have ever seen on a reality tv show. That was the biggest travesty of justice since Roy Jones Jr got screwed in Korea.

There was and is absolutely NOTHING funny about that full of crap little egomaniac. "this contest should be won by someone who is going to change society, someone the children of America will look up to." What a fvcking clown.

And his set was the most unfunny load of crap I have ever seen. Of course he started with the same asian accent bit that he used in all the initial episodes and then he went into a five minute blah blah blah fest that was nothing more than an inaudible extension of his ONE opening joke.

On the other hand, I've now seen Dave Mordal at least 4 different times doing his standup on this show and he has yet to tell the same joke twice. He was far and away the funniest person there just like he was far and away the funniest person on that stage tonight.

Anyone who falls for Dat's BS about integrity and honor is probably spending the rest of their free time wondering when that pyrmaid scheme they gave money to is going to finally pay off. in other words, you're pretty friggen gulible.

Another thing, those guys were right, this idiot IS NOT FUNNY! he hasn't said ONE funny thing the entire time he has been in the house and when he said that he saves it for the stage he was admitting that he's not funny at all. All he has is that one stupid look at me I'm really asian now I'm really not joke...and he's been milking it the entire time.

I won't watch another episode of this crap, thanks for clearing my schedule NBC.

Though Shakes you gotta admit the guy does have the ONE JOKE. I mean he IS Asian, can't he milk his ethnicity into a career?

I am Bummed, if I wanted to laugh at an asian accent ( Dat's only joke) I would go visit my neighbor, at least she would feed me fresh pot stickers and egg rolls while I was there.

When you go to visit your neighbor, bring me..... PLEASE.

When we were living in one of our many bases, I had a neighbor that was Asian, she would make spring rolls and stuff. I use to just drool from the good smells coming from her place. AAAhhhh I miss that.

And that's why, if I find out that Dave Mordal is appearing at the local comedy club, I will buy tickets. If I read that he's going to be on television, I will watch. After all, I know he's funny, and I know it will be different.

On the other hand, when Dat Phan is on TV, I will either change the channel or do something else. If he appears locally, I won't go. Why bother? I've already seen his bit, and I think Margaret Cho does it much funnier.

Well... this certainly blew up in my face.

What pisses me off so much is that i saw it coming. When Mordal was talking about "i'd be worried, young crowd, blabla", I felt Dat would win. I kept thinking over and over that the guy challenged never won so it HAD to happen someday.

Damn...

Mordal is friggin hilarious.

Just proves once again that humanity doesn't think the same way i do. Humanity is dumb.

If they had made this show like American Idol since the final 10 instead of 5, it would've been a very different story! (I'd like to think...)

... to travel to see Dave Mordal perform.

I would pay cash money to avoid seeing an untalented hack like Dat Phan.

Let's all agree to meet here in one year and compare notes on where Dave Mordal's career is at that time compared to Dat Phan's. Dave is guaranteed a career in comedy because he has the talent and creativity necessary to get the job done. The highlight of Dat Phan's comedy resume will be that scene he did on the sitcom where all they would let him do is pour a cup of coffee.

We can do this, but what will it matter, and what will it prove? Will Dave Mordal's career status make *me* think he's any funnier now? No.

And whether or not Dat Phan is gloriously successful in his sitcom career will not take away from the fact that he defeated Dave Mordal in one-on-one, mano-y-mano personal comic combat.

Personally, I hope they both do well and get what they want out of life (provided it's legitimate and legal, of course ).

13. "Here's the thing"
LAST EDITED ON 07-16-03 AT 10:11 AM (EST)

First off, I don't have the seething hatred for Dat that those of you who have chosen to voice your opinions have. The man is clearly not the funniest in the house, and at the moment his act is pretty damned monotonous, but he does have some talent, IM (less than popular) O.

Second, Dave was the funniest person in the house. I'm right with everyone there. IMO, he was head and shoulders above everyone else. More importantly, he'll be fine. He was on the show long enough, and he has enough talent to be recognized by somebody.

But as to last night's competition, let's be honest. Dave mailed it in. He has much better material than what he ran out last night. When he was done, I thought "wow, he just left the door wide open". I don't know whether it was rust, hanging around with the very un-funny Rich Vos for 2 weeks, miscalculation, or just plain boredom with the show and its format, but he didn't try. At least not hard enough.

These comics all get that practically the entire audience has never seen their act before. They get that Dat's a one-trick pony. But this audience had never seen that trick. I'm sure Dave knew that based on his comments beforehand. IMO, he blew it, plain and simple.

Chalk it up to "any given Sunday" (although in this case it's like the Jets and Colts in Super Bowl III). If it were a "best of 7" series with the same audience, Dave wins hands down. (Hell, even if it were a best of 3, he should win easily.)

So don't get mad at Dat, and don't get mad at the audience. Dat was focused and ready. Dave wasn't. And he only has himself to blame.

Humor is a personal thing. You all hate Dat and think he's not funny. I think Vos is a pathetic, chain-smoking, never-was, whose act hasn't been funny in years. None of us are right, and all of us are right.

Fester
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the comments, Fester. I agree with you about most of it. I especially agree with your opinion of Vos.

Humor IS subjective. I just honestly don't see what some of y'all see in Dave Mordal. That some of y'all find him funny is quite fine with me, but I don't share the view, 'tis all.

Humor is a personal thing. You all hate Dat and think he's not funny.

I don't hate Dat. I even liked his routine...the first time I saw it. But what makes me come back for more is a comic who has more than 10 minutes of material. The day Dat shows me he has, I'll reconsider my opinion of him.

I do think he's nuts for thinking this competition has some sort of global, mankind-changing effect, though, and showing me more material probably won't change that part.

I've mentioned my former relative by marriage who's in the business before. I saw his act a couple of years ago, and he was still trying to coast by on the same material he had been using three years before. That explains why he was still opening in NC instead of moving on to bigger and better things.

I think Vos is a pathetic, chain-smoking, never-was, whose act hasn't been funny in years.

Hey cool, it's not just me...

I'm whiny today because I've lost the one guy I had to cheer for in this thing (and because my coworkers are driving me insane, but that's another story). Everyone was else was a distant second at best to Dave in my mind. I guess I'm cheering for Corey by default, if I bother to pick a new favorite, but she's inconsistent. I'll have to think on that.

I agree with 2 things you said.

Dat is clearly insane. He's got a whole Norman Bates thing working with his Mom impressions. It gets real creepy after about 90 seconds. The man definitely has issues. I guess it's better he's on this show than setting up shop on a bell tower with a Manlicher-Carcano.

The show is going to definitely suck without Dave. His in house commentary was what made the show worth watching. Rich? Tess? Corey? Geoff? Thanks, but no thanks. Ralphie's even growing tiresome.

I'll still watch...at least next week.

If only Dat could've picked Vos...

Now that would have been awesome! I would have been doing the Dat Dance around the house last night. The one redeeming quality Vos has shown was his respect for Dave. Other than that, I've wished the Don could have been offed long ago.

LAST EDITED ON 07-16-03 AT 11:44 AM (EST)

I have to agree with Fester on this, Dave and his cronies sunk themselves. Dave mailed it in, they are all extremely arrogant and cocky, and I was glad to see them get what was coming to them, even if Dave had to take the Fall and Dat got to parade aroud with his chest all thumped up.

They keep talking about how it's not called "Nicest Guy Left Standing" and how it's called "Last Comic Standing" -- it's not the "Last Schemer Standing" either. And exactly how do we know that they were even comics, hell, we haven't even seen Vos, Jeff, or Tess perform yet and they are in the Final 6.

I think the fact that you can get all the way from semi-final competition to the finals in this contest without ever having to set foot on stage and perform is pathetic.

Dave, Vos and crew decided a long time ago that this was no longer a talent contest... so I have no problem with that decision coming back to bite them in the ass.

Gotta agree with you on Vos. And I really want to see how his New York act does when he's performing it for an LA audience.

I also don't think Dave's anything great... his performance two weeks ago was pretty good, but last night there's wasn't much there at all.

20. "One other point"
I could tell from just the first few minutes of the show that Dat Phan was going to win the contest at the end. From the editing. It has caused me to wonder what is the producers' purpose in this show.

1) they have made a point to show the mean side of some of the people, particularly Tess and Rich Vos, and some Dave. Flip side of the coin, they've shown Cory's good side on several occasions, Ralphie's b-day party and his girlfriend, and Dat Phan's "humanity" (more on THAT below).

2) Geoff has almost been completely blocked off and left out of the editing. I must confess that I didn't even remember he was part of the show until last week, when they made an issue of him not voting with the rest of the pack.

3) Okay, I couldn't have cared less about Dat Phan's "integrity" speech, but why show it in such excruciating detail? And clearly, the whole show was edited to bring about this "good guy" Dat vs. the acerbic, mean, Don-Vos-supporting Dave (who, also note, was shown just digging into Dat Phan). IMHO, the producers set up the "good underdog vs. big mean bad experienced Goliath comic" quite well.

Any comments on these aspects of the show? And, do you think there will be another "Last Comic Standing" series in the future? I sure hope so.

Hey Survivin':

You're right...of course the producers have an agenda and this thing is edited like crazy for the most sensationalist value...otherwise, would WE watch if eveyone was lovey-dovey? And its true I forgot about this guy Geoff myself. I don't know what his act is like. I missed the vast majority of the audition portion of the show, but maybe he's just not very good, or at least not as "compelling" as the others, at least not yet...perhaps he will be highlighted in upcoming episodes. You know this has all been decided already, so the producers know how they want to present each episode leading up to the the big finale of the "Last Comic Standing"...a soap opera with stand-ups...who woulda thunk.

And yes, I think they'll do another Last Comic show.

IMHO, Dave is funnier than Dat. Hands down. I demand a recount. I saw some hanging chads. (and some friends of Dat's who drove up from San Diego)

HOWEVER, the look on that yay-hew Vos' face was so worth the price of admission. It appealed to those of us who have made a career out of being the unpopular underdog in life, in school, at work, and on this board. I may never forgive Dat for knocking off Dave, who seems to be the only comedian there that makes me laugh. On the other hand, I am rooting for him to knock off the Godfather and proteges. I may not think his Asian accent is funny, but I think him beating the arrogant cocky pompous a$$es is frickin hysterical.

Bebo:
Right you are! Dave's comedy is so much sharper and well thought out, with a real concept. And you get a feeling for who this guy is.

Dat's set was insulting not just to Asians but to anyone who is a thinking human being. His set was tired and old and he really beat it into the ground...he had very little if any, variation on his theme. Obviously he is "inspired" by Margaret Cho with his impressions of his mother and father....but Margaret Cho is not only funny, her humor gives you some insight into her family. Dat, who by the way even though he is Asian, does a lousy incomprehensible accent! And his humor, such as it is, is juvenille and to my mind, stupid. He has no real jokes so he jumps on stage bouncing around and shrieking his set as if all that energy will make of for that fact that his material is so thin.

The only reason he got the vote was that the sudience has the attention span of a flea and apparently voted for the the "last comic seen" because that was all they could remember. Too bad Dave didn't perform afer Dat, then he surely would have won because the audience would have just seen him!

>>>Dave's comedy is so much sharper and well thought out, with a real concept<<<

You are exactly right, FunnyGal. Out of all the acts I've seen (which actually isn't many), I have to say that Dave's act is the most logical and flows the best out of anyone. However, I think our agreement ends there...

>>>Dat's set was insulting not just to Asians but to anyone who is a thinking human being.<<<

I disagree. I thought his act was hilarious. I don't think it was insulting at all, and while I can see comedy as being insulting in the right context, I thought this was far from it. Rather, it poked fun at the typical mannerisms of a demographic group. That's what comics do, and it's funny. Is he saying that every Asian in the world acts exactly like his parents? Of course not! But rather, I'm sure many Asians would be able to recognize a little bit of their parents in his description.

>>>His set was tired and old and he really beat it into the ground...he had very little if any, variation on his theme<<<

Yeah, that's true. But every comic has to have their thing. Fact is, Dat is Asian, he knows how Asians act. Why not stick with what he knows? And I don't see his sticking to that one thing as necessarily bad (a lot of very good comics do that), just different.

>>>Obviously he is "inspired" by Margaret Cho with his impressions of his mother and father....but Margaret Cho is not only funny, her humor gives you some insight into her family<<<

I'm glad you brought up Margaret Cho, because she really does prove my bracketed point above. I do agree that his act was very similar to hers (I said as much to my Dad, who was watching with me), but I really do love Margaret. I could literally sit there and watch her act over and over again and laugh every single time I saw it. I think Dat has a lot of similar experiences, being Vietnamese, and it shows in his act.

>>>Dat, who by the way even though he is Asian, does a lousy incomprehensible accent<<<

Yeah, that was definitely true. But, IMO, that made it funny. I probably wouldn't laugh as hard at a perfectly accurate Asian accent.

>>>And his humor, such as it is, is juvenille and to my mind, stupid. He has no real jokes...<<<

Well, I suppose we can agree to disagree here. It's all just a matter of opinion. Different people like different kinds of humour. I thought the joke at the end of his act ("Two Asians walk into a bar...") was absolutely hilarious.

>>>...so he jumps on stage bouncing around and shrieking his set as if all that energy will make of for that fact that his material is so thin.<<<

And sometimes it does. Energy and spirit and focus counts for a lot when you're trying to impress people. Even if his act was perhaps a bit less funny than Dave's (which it was), I think that the energy he showed swinging it over to his side is no crime.

>>>The only reason he got the vote was that the sudience has the attention span of a flea and apparently voted for the the "last comic seen" because that was all they could remember<<<

I wouldn't say the only reason, but a reason? For sure.

>>>Too bad Dave didn't perform afer Dat, then he surely would have won because the audience would have just seen him!<<<

I think it would have been closer at the very least.

So maybe I was wrong, we don't really disagree about the facts. We just perceive and interpret them differently

Wow, Survivorerist!

I haven't been disected like that since my surgery back in '97!
But I take your point(s). I just felt that Dat's "Asian" humor was tired and very stereotyped. And my main problem with his cartoonish Asian accent was that he screamed his material when he was using that accent and I for one, found it difficult to understnd everything he was saying.

And I stil don't think he's funny. I'm a comic and I know that comics use their life experiences...I certainly do, but I try not to stay on one aspect of that experience for my entire routine. Anyway, if they do a second "Last Comic Standing" I'm going to audition for it (I must be a masochist!)...Yikes! What if I got into the house?!!?! I'd better rethink this one.

But while I'm at it...Tess must go! Its one thing to have self-confidence, but she really is full of herself and there is a real nasty streak in her, I think.

True, very true.

>>>And I stil don't think he's funny. I'm a comic<<<

And I'm an Asian, so I guess that makes us about even

>>>my main problem with his cartoonish Asian accent was that he screamed his material when he was using that accent and I for one, found it difficult to understnd everything he was saying.<<<

I don't know about you, and you're probably right (what am I saying? It's your opinion, so it's definitely right! ) but that's what an Asian accent sounds like (okay, so not exactly, but in the general area). I understood it, but only because I've heard it a lot (my uncle talks exactly like his impression of his dad, but a little more garbled because he talks fast)

>>>Anyway, if they do a second "Last Comic Standing" I'm going to audition for it (I must be a masochist!)<<<

I had a masochist once, my nails actually turned out quite nice

>>>Yikes! What if I got into the house<<<

You had better pray. Hard.

Have to agree 100%. I'd like to see him perform in front of an audience with a brain-he'd crash & burn. Dave M was bangin'. Would like to see him and Rich do an act together.

I did think that Dave was funnier than Dat last night, but his energy was low and he seemed a little off his stride. Dat's energy was higher and he connected with the audience (obviously). I was also surprised at how at ease he appeared in front of the audience, knowing that he doesn't have a lot of experience doing stand up. Only after we see his next set will we have an idea if his repetoire extends beyond "my funny Asian family."

I like Dave's humor, and I have no doubt he is very talented. Hopefully the exposure he got from doing the show will produce results for him.

What I don't like is the way the whole "us against Dat" drama has played out. It makes all of them look bad to me. Grow the f up! Dat is definitely annoying, seems like a hyper kid and rather immature for his age - but he has taken the 'ha ha, joke's on you' and general picking and sniping at him with pretty damn good grace. And no one can say this guy doesn't work his butt off trying to be a good comedian. So he has charts and index cards? So what? It worked on last night's crowd.

I personally loved watching Tess, Cory and Vos, as they listened, dismayed, as the crowd reacted to Dat. It was priceless. I love a good come-uppance! This show definitely has me hooked.

Mmmm Topaz
