Figured it wouldn't hurt to start another thread for this week's episodes, just so it doesn't get lost. There actually seems to be a fair amount of discussion for this show.

Here are some of my early impressions of this week's attention whores:

Alexis Lopez (hereafter referred to as A-Lo): Once again, starting the show off with a bang. Definite number one pick, IMHO.

Gil Sinuet: Not bad, but had a lot of Michael Jackson in his voice, which isn't a good thing. Mrs. Lotus said he needed more backbone to his voice.

Angela Peel: Not my style, but definitely had something working for her. Will probably make it.

AJ Gil: Another guy with not enough backbone to his voice. Has a nice look though, but would be better off in the Next Big Boy Band than as the Next Big Thing.

Tenia Taylor & Alexandra Bachelier: Turn the Miami Sound Machine off. They followed 4 good performances, you knew sooner or later the quality would drop off.

Jazmin Lowery: Not bad, but her look was really off, if you ask me. The dress was horrid (that wasn't pink, it was pank) and the blue eye shadow was right out of the trailer park.

Jamar: Lost all respect from me when he chose not to use his last name. You're not big enough to go by one name yet, Jamar. Simon was right on when he said that all he did was shout the song.

Kelly Clarkson: You go girl! Dallas area pride working here, but she just did a phenomenal job. Not often that a white girl can pull off Aretha. Will make the cut.

Justin Guarini: I'm with Simon, I have no idea what to say about this guy. Doing the same song as someone else really hurt his chances, IMO. Came off as trying a little too hard with his "look".

My picks: Alexis and Kelly are locks, Angela will probably make it, but Gil or AJ could be this round's Jim.

I think you are overlooking Justin as a definite vote getter. In the second round, he actually made Paula Abdul CRY she was so moved by his performance. Everyone loves this guy and his charisma. His charisma is a separate character on this show.

I like Kelly too, but other than that I thought there were some weak performances. I really hope those best friends from Miami who just "happen" to wind up in the same group every time don't make it.

Simon did mention that he had the "X-Factor", and I guess that is something to consider. But maybe it's just me, other than the hair I thought he was terribly unremarkable.

I think their dream ends here. Neither was terribly impressive, and Alexandra reminded me of a high school talent show at best.

But it does all come down to votes, doesn't it? So how long will the average person keep trying to vote after the show is over if they get a busy signal,5-10 minutes? More importantly, will they
vote just once or will they pick one performer and keep voting for that person? If you recall in Big Brother 1 George's wife had a campaign to axe Brittany that worked.More importantly,is there a rule as to a single vote per household?

There are no rules limiting voting. You can vote for as many contestants as many times as you want. I have seen other message boards where people claim to be voting over 200 times, pressing redial for the entire two hour time period. I have also seen a campaign to vote for everyone except the two Miami girls to ensure that they do not win.

I am in full support of this petition.

Anyways, the American public never ceases to amaze me. Alexis didn't get picked? They picked the failed Backseat Boy AJ? Justin I can at least understand people getting suckered in by, but I just don't get how in the world AJ could have made it.

Much props to Gil for nutting up and asking Paula Abdul. I doubt she'll go through with it, but still...

Anyways, I'm now thinking that A-Lo is the wildcard choice. All 3 judges thought she should have made it. So do I.

What the hell? I'm agreeing with Simon? Shoot me.

6. "RE: American Idol 6/25-6/26-The Fix is In"
There is a very interesting article on the reality news online website...sorry that I am not computer literate enough to post the link, but it is from a guy in South Africa reporting on the problems with their "idol" show and how it was probably fixed. I am thinking that the American version is also a set up. They do not post the vote totals, and they have no way of knowing how many phone banks have been set up to skewer the vote, and given the results. This cries out to me "FIX"! Where is the East German Judge to make this travesty right.

On this weeks contest Alexis (A-Lo) was clearly the superior talent. She has the total package. Justin, may not be my cup of tea, but I can understand that this boy has charisma and sex appeal, but the other two winners are lame no talent kids that showed nothing. The white chick did a terrible version of the Aretha Franklin tune "Respect" and that AJ or whatever his name is did something forgetable.

They have to pad this show with dumbass remarks from those two retard hosts, and the product placements are as subtle as a train wreck. I almost forgot...this is on Fox...who else would have such a loser show. Simon is the only thing legit on it.

I am beginning to wonder if we are all watching the same show. Alexis sang well, but to me she was NOT the total package. Her head moved in an annoying way....too much smile, bad hair. I was annoyed by her, and I assume many others were as well, which is why she didnt get the vote. I am a trained singer, so I will say this with all confidence....Kelly did an AMAZING job at Respect. It was perfect. She never missed a note, a beat, or an ad lib. It was tremendous. And anyone that knows singers will know we dont pass out compliments very freely, especially to others of the same gender Kelly proved that she's every bit as talented as Christina Aguilera. (Yes, she IS talented) and she was put on a whole other level than Alexis. Alexis has the potential to be the "package" but she's a bit too young at the moment. That's just my opinion.

'American Idol': 'American' cheese
Justin wins, but was Angela robbed?
June 27, 2002 Posted: 1:40 PM EDT (1740 GMT)

By Jessica Shaw
Entertainment Weekly

(Entertainment Weekly) -- This week had the lusciously perfect Justin doing Stevie Wonder justice (unlike that pumpkin-head Gil), but beyond that, I didn't find the second round of contestants all that interesting.

Last week there was drama, tension, potential romance, and Kelli's hair. This week?

Sure, the underage Alexis had it going on, and Tenia's dress was worth a guffaw or two, but are we really going to remember Jazmin or Kelly after tonight? Oh, wait. Kelly actually made the cut. How is it possible that the utterly forgettable (even Simon admitted he couldn't remember her) ''R-E-S-P-E-C-T'' singer got a spot in the finals before Angela whose rendition of ''Run to You'' would have made Whitney proud? Still, Justin must have been relieved since she is no competition for him.

Of course, neither is A.J., who somehow managed to draw criticism from the annoyingly nice Paula Abdul. The guy looks like 'N Sync, has a Backstreet Boy name, and sings O-Town? Hello, no career beyond 25!

Still, like Jim ''Moonlight Kisses'' Verraros before him, A.J. scored with the sympathy vote. Simon dissed him big time and America felt the need to defend our own (especially cause he sang the ''Star Spangled Banner'' in his first audition) against the Brit. ''I think there were better people on the show,'' Simon said to the clearly shocked winner tonight. Yeah, no duh.

Try pretty much everyone except Jamar (that's right, one name) whose version of ''Careless Whisper'' may yet send George Michael back to random men's bathrooms, and Alexandra, who would barely get an honorable mention at a high school talent show.

Onto more disturbing thoughts. I'm not sure which made me come closer to pukage: the ridiculous Ford product placement (at least Ryan and Brian weren't offering everyone Cokes this week), when Gil asked Paula out on a date, or when Paula said yes. Will Gil and Paula be on the cover of next week's Star? Has-been reality show hostess found canoodling with reject! What's up with all the contestants thinking Paula is such a hottie? Am I crazy or does she scream washed-up Laker Girl?

The most interesting part of the show may end up being who gets the judges' wild card vote. Last week I would have said that Chris had that spot locked up, but after this week's surprises, Alexis or Angela may find themselves competing for the record contract. By the way, I have a newfound respect for Alexis who lost with dignity and charm...which is more than I can say about that hideous Kelli. That's right, people. Any opportunity I can get to take Kelli down one notch further, I'm there. Got a problem with that?

9. "RE: American Idol 6/25-6/26"
OK, I think I see a pattern now that the field has been narrowed to 3 groups of 10.

The first show, I thought that Tamyra and Ryan Starr (aka Tiffany Montgomery), would move on, and they did.
The third selection was Jim who was the most insulted by Simon. I believe he said something to the effect of, "if you are selected to move on we will have failed as judges".

The second show, I thought that Justin (based on his second performance more so than the third) would move on and from what I read Kelly was also a popular choice. The third selection, AJ, was again the person most berated by Simon, "I think you have blown it" even Paula and Randy said AJ was boring.

So I think we are seeing a backlash against Simon. I have seen numerous posts on message boards less advanced than this one that say things like "Simon is soooooo mean!!" I think that these are the people with nothing better to do than to sit around hitting re-dial as long as the phone lines are open (and they have been staying open longer than two hours from what I have read). These people are out to prove that Simon is wrong, and you shouldn't be mean, and to stand up for the falsely inflated egos of the world. So I predict that whoever is verbally abused by Simon the worst in the next round will also become a finalist.

11. "One of the 6 Finalists to be disqualified on Tuesday!"
LAST EDITED ON 06-29-02 AT 07:23 PM (EST)

According to the American Idol website and a commercial some people have been posting about on the AI message board, one of the 6 finalists is being disqualified on Tuesday.

From the website:
"Controversy erupts! One of the contestants is caught in a lie and disqualified! Who is it? Find out Tuesday!"

Most posters on the AI message board theorize that someone has lied about their age and are therefore too old or too young (the official age limits are 16-24). Other possibilities being proposed are a pre-existing record contract/recording or someone not actually being a U.S. citizen. Someone on the message board quoted the commercial as saying: "It's one of your favorites"--does this mean that it is one of the people who got the first chair?

The ages reported on the AI website for the finalists:

Justin, 23
Tamyra, 22
Kelly, 20
Jim, 19
Ryan, 19
A.J., 17

Assuming that someone who lied about their age wouldn't stray too far from the truth, this would probably indicate Justin, Tamyra or A.J.

Also being discussed--the possibility that Jim's parents aren't really deaf as he has claimed.

My guess is that this so-called "controversy" is just a ratings gimmick by FOX. The ratings, which overall are good for a summer show, fell off last week and FOX doesn't want any other new show to take away AI's title of being the #1 hit of the summer. Whatever it is, FOX knew and sat on it until the right time came around to announce it.

As far as the voting system goes, I think the public picks the top person, but the other two are predetermined by someone else before the live show comes on. How else can you explain that for two weeks in a row you get one great singer, a good, but could be better one and the worse one out of the group advancing to the next level? Plus, the winners sit in the same spots (1st and 2nd picks together in the front row and the 3rd pick from the top row) and are featured the most. There's too many things going on not to wonder if this show is for real or not.

I've seen on other sites that supposedly it's Justin Guarini who is disqualified because he's over-age. So I imagine that either the fourth place person will move up, or there will be two wild cards.

There was an article in USA Today that said the reason the contestant is diqualified is because he/she is 25 and the contestants are supposed to be 16-24. I hadn't heard that it was definitely Justin, but he is older looking than most of the older finalists.

I think it is going to be someone from this week's group of ten that is disqualified. Otherwise, why wouldn't they either wait to announce it until after this show, or announce it the week that that contestant sang.

Exactly my thoughts sticks!! If it would have been someone else, they would have already told everyone. They played that "it could be one of your favorites" bit just to get people to watch. It's a ploy, obviously. Anyway, I'm sure it's someone from this week, and since I have no clue who any of them are, I dont care

POOR PAULA: There are some tense moments on tonight's American Idol, with rival judges Simon and Randy nearly coming to blows. Randy takes his British counterpart to task for calling two of the finalists losers. "I sit here week after week and you keep insulting these people and calling them losers," Randy snaps. "You can't do that... You're in America and you can't do that." Responds Simon: "It is my opinion and I have an opinion about this competition... they are losers and they don't deserve to be in this competition." Someone give Simon a hug, please!

OK - if this mystery has already been solved, I apologize. But they had Simon and Randy on the Today show this morning. Randy said that the contestant that gets booted is male, claimed to be 23 but is really 29. I'm not paying enough attention to the show to figure out who it could be, but it better not be that cute boy who sang the Stevie Wonder song - cause I dig him. Although if it is him, my crush would be more acceptable if he were 29 instead of 23. He's a little hottie, that one.

P.S. Why do I think SImon is hot? When will I get over my fascination with mean, cruel, belittling men with accents?

I think now it may be Delano, who performs tonight. He sang at my high school (I teach, not student) about 6 years ago and seemed like a teen-ager then, but others have said now it's him, and he also looks kind of old, as does Justin. But it's true, it probably isnt' Justin since he's already made the finals,so now I'm saying it's Delano. Ironically, "Delano" means "from the a$$hole" in Spanish.

Delano? Maybe.
I don't think so, The Today show interview Randy said the person was eliminated already, should be interesting.
Also Simon goes off about how 2 weeks in a row that there was a sympathy vote for obvious losers, and since 2 to 4 million of his companies money is going to be invested in the winner, he doesn't think those without talent should make it to the next level.
It's one of the reasons he and Randy argue and nearly fight tonight.
The Today Show has been interviewing the winners on Thursday morning. ( at least they did last week)

Also interesting to me was that I saw Paula on Inside Edition last week, and she was saying they edited some of her confrontations with Simon.

He is an interesting character ( yes Pooh, and kinda hot too)

BTW- am I the only one who thinks that the person who cut Matt Lauers hair should be shot!!??
