"American Idol 08/13/02 !!!!!"
The last five has just finished singing (at least on the West Coast) to the there of "love songs". Here are my very personal thoughts on the singers:

1. (tie) Kelly & Tamyra. With Kelly she sounded great with a great song. Tamyra sounded great with, what I have always thought was, a very boring song. They are both shoo-ins. Although the way they praised Tamyra is like she has become Whitney Houston or something. She was good, but not that good, sheesh !!!!!

3. RJ. I think he sounded great with a great song. His problem is he always starts very nervous. I think he bought himself one more week. Simon despises this kid, and I don't understand why. Anyway major improvement over last week.

4. Justin. He was the "Jeckyl & Hyde" of the night. His voice was nice, strong and clear at times, and then POOF it would turn cranky and flake on him. He went back to the winks and smirks at the camera again.

5. Nikki. She was awful. I hope the audience does not fall for the kid crying at the end. She was awful, out of her league.

Predictions for tomorrow:
OUT: Nikki
Second to last: RJ (Although I think Justin deserves this spot more.)

Damn. After last week's big band abortion, I thought it couldn't get any worse. But here we go, dragging along half-dead Burt Bacharach for the ride.

First off, when this show returns in January, can we PLEASE for the love of Slytherin get some new hosts? Their chemistry is truly awful, the jokes are very forced, and they're just a painful listen. The horrid segues and lame attempts at being "hip" are falling flat every time.

Secondly, thank you to the producers for showing us that Christina is still alive and well, despite all the promos acting like she died or something serious. Bad form for showing her being taken out to the ambulance. And quit showing us the failed contestants. I notice AJ didn't even bother to show up, and Ryan looked SO pissed the entire time. And she should be. If she was still around for the last two weeks, she'd have a great shot, these two weeks have been perfect for her.

Now onto the *ahem* talent portion of tonight's show.

Kelly- Once again, Kelly is the class of this show, and if she doesn't win, it will be a crime. She's the only contestant who has been able to choose songs well and pull off every style they've thrown at her. But last night was not her best performance. Fortunately, she's far enough above the rest of the crowd that one bad performance won't hurt her.

RJ- FINALLY, we see a spark of life from the forgotten boy band member. He's coasted along, and last night he gave, IMODO, the best performance we've seen from him. That said, it was merely an above average performance. But he was also the only one who showed improvement in my opinion. He's saved himself for one more week, but if he somehow makes the final 3 it'll be a shocker.

Tamyra- Tamyra, Tamyra, Tamyra... what has happened to you? Once a front-runner and top contender, the past two weeks she's been way off her game. Her energy was down big time, and she just looks tired. They're comparing her to Whitney Houston, but last night she reminded me more of Mariah Carey. Good voice, but right on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She's dropped to a definite 3rd, IMO.

Justin- IT'S ALL ABOUT THE HAIR! He must tease that hair, because it looks mad. He's got the performance part down pat- he still knows how to work the crowd, but he seemed kind of tired last night too. Like most of the other contestants, he's pretty much going through the motions, and it really showed on him. He'll still probably make it to the finals.

Nikki- The girl with Tequila Sunrise hair is about to ride off into the sunset. How she survived last week I don't know, but two weeks of songs that are totally the wrong style for her have doomed her, if you ask me. And she knows it. If there's a rock band looking for a chick lead singer, they can do a lot worse than to hire her. But as far as "American Idol" goes, she's just not "pop" enough to win. Unless the American public gives her the sympathy vote because of her kid, she's gone this week. But hey, sympathy worked for AJ and Jim.

Overall, the weeks of work are really starting to take their toll on all of the contestants. They all looked and sounded tired last night, and energy has been fading for a couple of weeks now. If any of these people had performed like this in the round of 30, I would only be able to see Kelly making it into the final ten. This needs to end soon, or someone else is going to be taking the Christina Christian ride to Happytown.

Another boring week!

Nikki will be out; RJ second to last.

Kelly and Tamyra were OK. God, Paula, why the hell are you crying? No one is that good.

RJ, I thought this was his best performance yet. Has anyone else noticed that he can only sing five notes? His range does not exist. They even had to change the octave of the song to fit his range. I guess that is considered "making a song your own", but honestly he gets the easiest possible songs to sing and half the time messes them up too.

Justin, I was on the J-train, but that train derailed a few weeks ago and has not gotten back on course. You've lost it bud.

Nikki, stop shouting at me, I didn't do anything to you.

Ryan Starr, you are out of the competition, you don't have to wear those clothes any more. Try dressing like a normal person. Tell you sad clown boy friend Jim to do the same.

Last night pretty much sucked and blew didn't it? Ok, on to the reviews!

Kellie - well she's an amazing girl, but that song didn't work for her. I'm glad she tarted herself up a little bit. She looked very sultry lst night. I just love that kid. Whether she wins this or not - she's going places (am I starting to sound like a 85 year old now or what) She deserves to win - she's so talented and natural - you almost have to like her.

RJ - well, it's the best I've seen him, but he still sucks. Why why why do these kids think it's a good thing to do all these vocal riffs in the middle of a song? If you actually have range - go for it, but he is just so white bread. I guess if I was 13, I would probably buy his poster - and maybe that's the point.

Tamrya - I didn't think she was that good last night. She was down, the song was down. I thought I must have missed the boat or something since Simon practically dry humped her with praise, but it's good to see y'all were underwhelmed too.

Justin - ack! I am so over him now. Whenever things start to go south in a song (which is inevitable because he isn't that great of a singer) he starts doing the smoldering eye and sly grin thing to the camera. It's like when you go to a bar, and run out of money - just unfasten a few more buttons and you don't have to pay for any drinks. Justin falls back on the look because there's not much else there. He just not that good.

Nikki - what a horrible song for her! It was bad last night. It was really bad last night. But I still kinda like the freak.

The boot: Nikki based on last night, but for overall supreme suckiness throughout the competition, RJ should go

And Randy, Randy, Randy - for cripes sake, get some new material dude - it is driving me completely insane!

Speaking of new material, Paula should tell her hired writer to start earning his money. Come backs to Simon in the same form as "well your mother wears army boots" is not only childish, but annoying.

Every one of Paula's comments to the contestants stem from song selection. If she says song selection is KEY one more time, I'm going to rip my hair out. You have a week in between shows, think of something new to say. If she (& Randy, for that matter) are bringing up the song selection comment every show to let the new viewers in on this fact, do they have to say it after every performance?

edited for spelling

I''m with you all! I've liked several of Nikki's performances. I think her "Piece of My Heart" was one of the best by any contestant. However, last night she was doomed. The genre was going to ruin her anyway, and she didn't even do a good job with what she was given. After last night, I have to say she deserves to go.

RJ is getting mas gay every week. He also seems to be storing food in his cheeks for the winter. But he wasn't as bad as Nikki (last night, that is) overall, he's the weakest but will live one more week. Also, why do people say Simon hates him? He did pick him to be the Wild Card over much better candidates such as Christopher, Angela and Kelli.

The other three have nothing to fear for now.

Ryan Seacrest makes me want to punch him. Really. Him walking around saying "Where my ho's/hose at?" was a new low. Message to Ryan: Your "ho's" are on Santa Monica Blvd, as if you didn't know.

Dunkleman also annoying, but not as horrible as Seacrest.

Randy Randy Randy "I sure like your initials RJ" needs to be replaced as well, despite his credentials

Paula: Fire your writer, he's not earning his money, and you look like a fool.

This show has grown so dull. I doubt I will watch the second season. I really only watch now because there's nothing else on tv when I get home from work.

I was kind of bored with last night's performances. In fact, I fell asleep watching them. Luckily, my DW taped the show for me, so I wathced it today. All I can say, is I'm glad I didn't miss my sleep last night.

The judges were low on the entertainment scale. Who's writing their material. Whoever it is, they're overpaid.

As far as the contestants, I just felt that Nikki was shouting her song. The girl can sing, but the love song theme was way out of her comfort zone.

RJ probably sang better than I have seen him so far, and most of you know I'm not a real big fan of his. I think he desreves to stay after this week.

Justin - boring. I just couldn't get into the song he was singing, and the wink and the nod are back.

Tamyra did well, as usual, but I still thought she could have done much better.

Kelly - what can I say. She looked really good, sang well. There's just something about her. Okay, maybe I'm biased. So sue me.

My picks - Nikki will go tonight (unless she gets the sympathy vote for her crying son). Justin and RJ will be in the bottom three and I think they are neck and neck after last night.

On a side note, ET reported it's viewer poll tonight showing the following percentages for most likely to go:

Justin - 30%
Nikki - 24%
RJ - 24%
Tamyra - low teens (sorry can't remember, but it was like 12% or 14%)
Kelly - I think it was 10% (although I might have her and Tamyra switched)

For the love of God! How the hell is Nikki still there? She sucked so badly yesterday and she had the same amount of suckage today (during the group song, the note she's holding sounds awful!). She can't actually sing - she sounds like nails on a chalkboard and she doesn't seem to be able to choose a pitch.

I don't really see this show all too often and I've really only been watching inconsistantly since the finals started but the other contestants must have been pretty damn horrible for her to have made the final 4.

You know KoKo, I agree with you, Nikki was horrible last night and just as I predicted, she got the sympathy vote. very smart of her to bring her kid to the show, because that is the only reason she is still in this thing.

I guess we don't need to watch next week. Nikki's toast. Then again, she might bring the crying kid again, and then all bets are off

My God she is like the Energizer Bunny. I do not see why they do not just start the show with Nikki sitting on the other side of the stage by Seacreast and Dunkleman. She has that walk down. She is still there due to a loyal fan base that no matter how bad she is, they vote for her because she is not as whitebread as the others.

I swear I feel like ramming Q-tips in my ears evertime the camera goes to our two rocket scientists Seacreast and Dunkleman. Could they get lamer? I really think they are trying to. No sense of humor, no pace and no chemistry. Also, Paula, why don't you try saying something constructive for once in you life. Do you even realize that there is only one winner?

Since there doesn't seem to be much interest about AI here, I don't stop by often--but I would like to add my thoughts to this thread...

My review of Tuesday's performances:

1. Tamyra. While I thought that Simon went overboard in his comments, I did think that this was one of the best performances on the show thus far (if not THE best). I just really bought into the emotion of the song. Tamyra may have been a little shaky during the bridge, but the pure emotional connection made it an outstanding performance.

2. Kelly. She has an outstanding voice, but this week in particular (although I've felt this way with most of her songs) had no real connection to the song's lyrics. She has the best vocal tone and pitch in the competition, but focuses too much on showing it off rather than delivering the meaning of the song she is singing. In "Walk On By" I was particularly disturbed to see her smile at the audience while singing "every time I see you I break down and cry". This lack of a real personal connection puts her as #2 on my list, even if she does have the best voice in the competition.

3. R.J. He sounded good (as he always has), but still delivers the same level of performance each week. I like his voice, but he doesn't move me. Boring, in fact. While I don't think he should win the competition, he was certainly better than Nikki EVERY week (and Christina was better than both R.J. and Nikki overall). I'm not sad that he's gone, but I still disagree with the result.

4. Justin. Oh, Justin. It's too bad he can't go back to singing a cappella ballads, because singing with an orchestra just makes his voice sound THIN! He has worked hard to try to overcome his vocal limitations with his stage presence, but by now it all seems too much like a gimmick. "The Look of Love" bored me to tears, and did nothing to prove his worth as a singer.

5. Nikki. Now, her performance wasn't entirely bad--but when most of the held notes came out flat, well...it was just painful. She is a pretty woman with an interesting style, but this show hasn't really been up her alley. The genres have been all wrong for her. She clearly is out of her league in this competition, but I don't think she is a hopeless case. She just isn't the American Idol (no matter how frantically her fans vote to keep her in the competition).
