"American Idol 08/20/02 !!!!!"
Just saw this week's performances and frankly only one of the contestants was shining tonight. Here is how I think they all did this week:

1. Kelly. In a class by herself. She was the only one that gave a phenomenal performance (the second song) and more importantly was (along with Nikki) a consistent performer tonight. She's safe for next week.

2. Nikki. By default, she lands here in my opinion. She was OK both times, a little shaky but had the luxury of songs that suit her.

3. Justin. Jeckyl & Hyde again. He was good with the first song (not as good as the judges thought though), the second song he was just horrible, bad Michael Jackson imitation, he was all over the stage and his voice has never sounded worse. I cannot stand him anymore, he is soooo smug.

4. Tamyra. WHAT HAPPENED HERE ?!!!!! She was horrible tonight. Her voice was cracking the entire time, she sounded like she was truly doing kareoke. She's was super, super bad. I could not believe. She did look phenomenal though.

OUT: Nikki.
Should be out: Justin

No question. She will win this competition. Unless of course the producers don't want her to. Seriously, though, she is the only contestant to take on every style they've thrown at them and come out on top. And when you hear how shot her voice is in the interviews, it's that much more amazing.

>2. Nikki. By default, she lands

I love Nikki. But she's just not the "American Idol." She was probably hurt the most by the past two weeks' themes. IMHO, I don't think the producers *wanted* her to make it this far, and scheduled "swing night" and "Burt Bacharach night" accordingly. Somehow she got lucky both weeks. But she was in her element last night: "Angry Lesbian Rock." She pulled off Melissa Etheridge and Alanis without sounding like a bad karaoke imitation. But I'm afraid it was too little too late. I love the new 'do though. Looks much better on her than Kelly Osbourne.

I don't understand the judges' hard-on for him. He's got a good look, I guess, and of the guys that made it, he's the best of the bunch. I'm sure the producers are really gunning for a boy-girl final, and will "help" him along. He knows the trick though- when you got nothing, play to the crowd, dance a little, and smirk. Fleh. Ditch this guy.

Tamyra has been falling apart for 3 weeks now. She butchered the "Hi-de-ho" song, which just did not fit her *at all*, then last week she gave one of her worst performances on Burt Bacharach night. I'm still waiting for her to have her nervous breakdown like Christina did. It kinda makes me sad, she started out the first few weeks as a clear favorite, but she's fading down the stretch, and I really doubt she has anything left in her tank anymore.

>OUT: Nikki.
>Should be out: Justin

I agree with you that Nikki is probably out tonight, but she shouldn't be. Going strictly by performances, Tamyra should be gone after this week. She'll probably be in the bottom two though.

Please, for the love of God though, the American Public needs to vote her off before she totally loses it on stage.

This was definitely the line of the night, if not the entire show. Paula has proven her worthlessness more and more as the show goes on. Simon's right, she's little more than a cheerleader. She very rarely says anything bad about the contestants, and even when she does, she sweetens it so much it loses any punch it might have had. Simon has been a hard-ass, but when someone has done well, he's admitted it, like he did last night with Nikki and last week with A.J. Randy is fine, he's kind of been the middle-man between Paula's rah-rah bull-heck and Simon's supreme d*ckhood.

Oh and kill Ryan and Bryan.

I actually thought Nikki was the best this week. Granted, the show finally landed on the one genre that actually has songs in her range. Good thing Melissa Ethridge has such a low voice.

Kelly is my favorite, but I thought that last night you could tell she was tired and hurting. It was like I could hear her sore throat when she was singing. She wasn't hitting notes that are normally in her range. I would still vote for her because I know that it isn't her fault. Her voice is not used to the stress of the past few weeks.

Justin- I'm over it. Couldn't you have sang a different song? He sang Get Here in the auditions and in Pasadena. Apparently that is the only song he can sing properly.

Tamyra, I know she's a good singer, but I'm just not feeling it. I don't know why. It's like she doesn't know what the songs she sings are about. No energy.

FYI, Paula's comedy writer's claim to fame is that he was a writer on the sitcom Home Improvement. Paula's no Tim Allen.

I was WONDERING where I had heard that song before, and now that you mention it, you're right. What's sad is that it's a song he's done several times and he still didn't knock anyone out with it. Kind of a bullheck decision, if you ask me, to allow him to do a song he's already done several times while everyone else has to learn a new song. At least this week they had the choice of songs they might have actually heard before. More fuel for the "producers really want a boy-girl final" argument, though...

The only person who still has energy really seems to be Kelly. Everyone else seems to just be going through the motions at this point, and I really think that the grind is getting to them. But Tamyra is the one who's fallen down the most, she looks like she's on the edge and could fall off at any time.

Neither was Tim Allen, towards the end of the show.

Going strictly on last night's performances I would say that Tamyra deserves to go. However, I have watched her for several weeks, so I tend to judge her on the body of work. Plus, I know her voice was strained going into last night. That being said, I still think she is number 2, behind Kelly.

As for Kelly, what can I say? Listening to her talk after her performances, I'm amazed she was able to sing as well as she did. She's going to need to rest those vocal cords some this week. I think she blew everyone else away last night. She might not win the whole thing (stranger things have happened), but she will definitely be there on the last night of the competition.

Justin did well on his first song, but what was up with the second? The style he has tried to create on this show just did not go with singing a Michael Jackson song, and I'm a little surprised he picked THAT MJ song.

Nikki did great last night. I'll have to agree with the judges on this one. She sang within her comfort zone for maybe the first time. Maybe if the show's producers had allowed her to do this throughout the whole show, we might be seeing more of her next week. But I think it might be too little too late.

My pick is Nikki, with Justin as an alternate choice. I'm basing this on the body of work versus one performance (granted that logic might be flawed for this show). I think Kelly and Tamyra have just built too big of a fan base to lose out at this point.

At least we didn't have any stupid Ford Focus and Coca-Cola Moments last night. It looks like the producers/advertisers have decided to tone those down a bit. We can only hope.

Just when I think that I've figured out The American Public, they change. One week it seems someone is gone on the basis of one performance (Christina), then the next it's their body of work (AJ). It's a hard call. Was Nikki good enough last night to erase several weeks of mediocre performances? Probably not. But was Tamyra bad enough last night to erase several weeks of good performances? Possibly.

I think we *did* get a Coca-Cola Moment last night, but it wasn't a bad Nickelodeon sketch like the last few weeks. Don't worry, they're saving it for tonight though, when they've got a half hour to fill and only 20 minutes of commercials.

See, I think that Tamyra may be on the ropes tonight. I think that the other three all have a niche of fans that are voting for them. I get the feeling that Tamyra doesn't have that niche. She has been consistently good, but she hasn't done anything great (Kelly) or different (Nikki). I think Justin will get a good amount of votes being the heart throb he has become. (Even though he looks like sideshow bob from the Simpsons).

I think Kelly has to be the leading vote getter tonight. I think the bottom two maybe Nikki and Tamyra. But, I think that everyone in America, including Nikki herself, feels Nikki is going tonight.

I have to agree with most of you........Nikki's star performances came a little too late to save her.........I'm thinking that Tamyra and Nikki are the bottom two, although I think Justin deserves to be in the bottom two, he has the backing of a lot of female fans. It'll be a crime if Kelly doesn't take this competition, and even if she doesn't win, she'll proboably still be better off in her career than whoever does win.

Well,
Nikki was the clear star of the night. She was very good on her first song, excellent on the second. She has a loyal fan base and may have garnered enough votes to save her yet again.

Kelly was second best. She was better than expected on "It's Raining Men," though she seemed to screw up the (simple) lyrics and was a little hoarse. (insert pony joke here)

Tamyra and Justin tie for last. Both had one good song and one debacle. I was more disappointed by Tamyra, since I expected Justin to suck on "PYT" but thought (wrongly) that Tamyra could rock "New Attitude" I felt so embarrassed for her when she tried to work up the crowd.

I'm probably wrong, but I think it will be a Nikki/Tamyra bottom two, with Tamyra leaving tonight. Only Kelly is definitely safe, IMO.
4th-Tamyra
3rd-Nikki
2nd-Kelly
1st Justin (though I hate him and he could go anytime, I just think a boy winner is more instant-pop-disposable-star marketable than a girl. Also I think it's semi-rigged)

Here's my $.02:

Kelly-Damn this girl can sing! I'm really rooting for her to win this. I think she can hold her own with any of the pop stars out there today.

Nikki-She was much better last night than in previous shows. I liked the Melissa Ethridge song, but I thought her first one was better. Of course, I watched the New Orleans Jazz Festival on Trio Sunday, and Melissa sang that song live. That made a huge difference in the way I viewed Nikki's performance. I would love to hear Nikki sing a Heart song, she'd nail it I think.

Tamyra-Her first song sucked! She was horrible. She did better the second time, but I'm not sure if it was good enough to make up for the first song. Tamyra, Tamyra, Tamyra-you are not Patty LaBelle!

Justin-Just go away! He has no range, no power in his voice. He can only sing certain songs that don't challenge him. The MJ impersonation was too horrid to watch. Notice how Paul didn't say she enjoyed listening to him-she said she enjoyed watching him. Was she watching the same show?

I also think Nikki will get the boot tonight. I think Justin should, but he has all those pre-adolescent girls voting over and over for him. UGH!

Totally agree with the quote of the night by Simon to Paula. I was LMAO when he said that!

IMHO, I think Kelly should take it. She has been the most consistent performer, and even though she was hurting last night, sang her heart out; I don't think Tamyra tried as hard, although she and Kelly have been my top two picks.

And let's face it, some of these kids still have the ticket to get signed. Christina will, Simon and Randy told her in so many words that they would hook her up. I was surprised that she got voted off instead of RJ, however, you have many young girls with the boys' numbers on their speed dial, voting multiple times.

The music industry is a tough one. It's not all about the music anymore; you have to have the look, the drive, and the attitude as well as the talent. That's why I'm not so quick to bash Simon; believe me, he's pretty mild compared to what some of my friends in the music industry have dealt with.

I CANNOT believe what just happened. No way, no how. Again, I am trying to remind myself of where the bulk of these votes are probably coming from. Tonight is the first night I have actually teared up when someone was eliminated. That was just messed up.

Oh. My. God! Who else is seeing this? The judges ~and~ Justin and Kelly are sitting there with this "What the fvck?" look. I'd say if they weren't sure the vote was being dramatically fixed before they can be now. So Tamyra wasn't completely amazing last night - well neither was Nikki, she was "good" which is an improvement over the last few weeks of "absolutely repulsive" but for the love of God - the girl can't sing for sh*t. Vote stuffers need to get over her. Now Tamyra isn't my favourite; Kelly is, but it was a total injustice to get rid of the girl with talent over the talent ~show~ girl.

Actually if the votes are for the weeks performance then Tamyra deserved to be eliminated, she was horrible last night.

If it's for total performances than Nikki deserved to go.

I liked Tamyra going because I thought she was Kelly's biggest threat, now it's Justin.

It's going to be a Justin/Kelly final. Nikki's very lucky to still be in this thing. I can't believe she has such a large fan base. Or maybe the audience really did vote on the performance of the week, in which case, as I already said she deserved to go.

It's pretty damned sad when some sack of crap like SideShow Justin does the worst imitation of Michael Jackson anyone other than Bubbles the Chimp has ever done and repeatedly done nothing but bubblegum crap and still remain, while Tamyra turns in one single subpar performance of ALL her showings and is eliminated. Just goes to show that the American public can never be understimated when it comes to stupidity.

Simple Simon the Pieman, almost said it all when he told Tamyra that "You have learned a very, very valuable lesson in this business. You are only as good as the public hears your last song." He could have extended that and pointed to Paula Abdul and said, "And this is a prime example of that, the woman hasn't had a "hit" in ten years but still imagines she is a super star."

So now we're left with Sideshow Justin doing the squats like he's taking a dump when he's trying to show his "moves" in those oh-so-70's pants or Kelly awkwardly stumbling around there in a dress and shoes she obviously isn't used to wearing trying to over power and over sing every song. (Hint, darling....try picking up each foot, they work better than way and you don't stumble over your own heels)

Or Nikki. I'll have to vote a couple of thousand times for Nikki. I could get lost in those beautiful eyes. Sigh. Now, if she'd only take the bone or what the hell ever it is out of her tongue and dump the kid, I could get on a decent fantasy.

And all things considered, which one had you rather listen to belt out a good rockin' song about 2 AM in a drunken bar? Justin, Kelly or Nikki? Who comes closest to being a rocker? Bring it on home, Nikki!

15. "Wow..."
That was a shocker! Although I kinda felt like Tamyra should've gone based on Tuesday's performances, I really didn't think she would. When Dumb n Dumber read her name first, I assumed it was to tell her she was safe, and Mrs. Malfoy and I were both speechless for a minute.

That said, Tamyra needed to go. She's been falling down for the past 3 weeks and the stress seemed to be getting to her more than anyone else. I honestly think she would've had a breakdown if she had stayed longer.

Now comes the real fun. Kelly is the class of this competition, and if she doesn't win, in the words of Simon, "This will be a failure." Which brings up the question of who is voting for Justin and Nikki. Who has more power- Justin's teenybopper fanbase or Nikki's rock n roller fanbase? And more importantly, if by chance the voting "actually" ends up this way, do the producers really have the balls to go with a Nikki/Kelly Texas Shootout, or will some of Nikki's votes "disappear" and force a Kelly/Justin final?

The problem here is that with all the controversy that's going on with the voting, almost any final is suspect, but none moreso than a Justin/Kelly final, IMO. Especially if Nikki has another strong week and Justin continues to go through the motions.

Here's my breakdown for the finals:
Kelly/Justin- tossup. While Kelly clearly should win, the whole "producers can make the final decision" has me slightly worried.
Justin/Nikki- Justin. No question. Nikki has a good look, but she's not as marketable as Justin to the Seventeen crowd.
Kelly/Nikki- Kelly. Kelly is just in a different league than Nikki.

The final two weeks should be interesting. With only 3 contestants left on the show, I'd like to see them perform 3 times each next week. But that would be asking the hosts and judges to cut out all their "witty" repartee, and we can't have that now, can we?

Daddy, there's a monster outside my room. Can I have a glass of water?

Well, I had a feeling it was Tamyra's time.
Several days ago I read that an "American Idol" movie will be filmed starring the two finalists. As soon as I read that, I knew the final had to be Kelly vs. Justin. After all, a girl-girl AI movie? No way, so Justin is guaranteed. Who will be his "love interest" in the movie. Piercy Nikki? I think not. Black Tamyra? No, not safe enough. Girl-next-door Kelly? We have a winner.
I'm glad Nikki survived because she was the best on Tuesday, but has no chance of making it another week.
Sadly, I think nasty, disgusting Justin has this thing locked up.

An "American Idol" movie? Ugh. If the "Coca-Cola Moments" and "Ford Focus on the Contestants" are any indication, this would be the worst idea since Greedo shooting first.

I totally agree - Justin had the whole thing wrapped up from the moment he first appeared on the show....I really have no idea at all why he has the largest and most rabid group of fans, as I see no reason why he deserves it, but unless the judges are actually allowed to ~judge~ the final, they might as well already start making the Justin posters and t-shirts.

The final will consist of three songs each. Two of those will be original material and the other is a song of their own choosing.

Their voices are extremely tired from all the rehearsal time and the recording of the A.I. album, not to mention all the appearances they have been making. The kids are exhausted.

I like this. Although if Justin makes it, I hope there's some way they can keep him from performing "Get Here" again.

No kidding. It was showing on Tamyra especially, but all of them are showing it. Their energy is nowhere near what it was at the beginning. No wonder Christina had to go to the hospital.

Well, I guess we know that at least this week's show wasn't fixed. Everyone involved thought and wanted a K-T-J final three, but when that didn't happen they didn't step in to change the results.

I think the voting comes down to whether you are voting for last night's performance or the performer's ability as a whole.

I voted a few times early on (I have stopped because all I get our busy signals. Also, I was only voting once which will make no difference when there are people hitting redial hundreds of times). My decision, personally, was based on everything I had seen of that performer. The first three weeks of the finals and even the semi-finals, Tamyra was the top dog. She was far and away the best singer in the group. She seems like she has been worn out the last few weeks. I would still vote for her because I KNOW she is a better singer than she showed Tuesday, especially better than Nikki.

The show got it's largest number of viewers ever Tuesday night, therefore a lot of people were tuning in for the first time. If that was all they new of the contestants maybe Nikki winning wasn't so far fetched. Also, I have always like Nikki's songs because they were upbeat and relatively popular choices. As someone with no musical training, it is more fun for me to hear Nikki sing Total Eclipse of the Heart or Melissa Ethridge, than to hear Tamyra sing some ballad I have never heard before. I recognize that Tamyra is a better singer, but I have always enjoyed Nikki's performances more (well, except for Ben).

That said, Tamyra may be better off. Simon will most likely sign her to his label and she will not have all the stipulations of an American Idol contract. I think she will have a career outside of this show which is more than I can say for anyone else in the competition.

I have to admit I didn't expect this to happen. Tamyra hadn't ever shown up in the bottom tier before. Ms. PackMan was pretty shocked by the whole thing. But Simon was right by telling Tamyra that she had just learned a valuable lesson about show bidness - you're only as good as you last performance (at least where the public is concerned).

This competition should be Kelly's to win, but this showed you can't count on what the public will do with voting, how much impact automated dialing is really having, etc.

Do we now have 3 distinct groups of voters, or do you think Kelly and Justin share some of the same fans, but Nikki's are loyal only to her? They have let her hang around for a long time, and now may be her time to rise up and take the whole gosh darn thing. Never underestimate the public's desire to see the underdog survive.

On another note, I was watching The Pulse on Fox last night, and they had a feature with Simon, discussing all things AI. I found it interesting that the production studio already has the song written for the winner of AI to record. Asked whether it was written for a man or woman to sing, Simon was very non-specific in his answer. So my question is this - would they have written a song to fit Nikki, Kelly, or Justin? Or were they shocked on Wednesday because they felt the song really fit Tamyra best?

My bet for the final 2 - Kelly and Justin. Hell, Fox may even have to set up their OWN autodialers. Nikki is the dark horse in this race, but she can be ignored no longer.

I saw the pulse too ( suffered through it for Ozzy and Simon)
Simon said the song was for either a boy or girl.

And didn't they show them recording it on the show? I'm almost sure they did....and if that was it then IMO, Justin sounded best from the few seconds we got to see of each person. Not that I want him to win, just that it ~did~ sound perfect for him.

You're right Koko. Actually, all 4 of the finalists have already recorded the song because of the lead time required to get it ready for distribution (mid-September). I, for one, would love to hear Tamyra's version.

I've also read that all 10 of the finalists will be part of a compilation CD (and possible tour) later this fall.

The winner of AI1 and AI2 will complete in an international version of the show against the winners from Great Britain, South Africa, France, Germany, and a couple of other countries I can't remember.
