"American Idol"

Is anyone going to watch this on FOX tomorrow night?
I have been seeing the Promos and it looks like a show where they ask people to go for their Dream of Stardom, and then crush them due to their lack of any talent. Looks like there is lots of crying as peoples dreams and egos are completely shattered.

I am so there!!
Can't wait!

( but if ya'll want to watch the chubby blond whiney girl pretend to not be the Mole, go ahead)

American Idol is what Popstars would be if every character on Popstars was PMSing at the same time.

Actually it was pretty funny. But surely most of the auditioners did it as a dare and not because they thought they had talent. If so we are a nation of very delusional people. My dog sounds better, heck I sound better and the only thing musical I can do is turn on the radio!

Hey Koko - did you watch Popstars?? If you did do you remember Alexandra Bachelier - the one who cried during the first workshop and then tried out for Popstars 2? She was on American Idol too - and made it past the first cut.

There was a Popstars 2? Actually, I believe Idol is from the same folks who brought Popstars to America... (yes, it's another import)

Yes, there was a Popstars 2 (both Canadian and American) - nope sorry, Tink I didn't watch either one. I did see the first one (though the US Popstars was more interesting IIRC - I don't remember caring too much....)

Popstars 2 completely failed and probably has one of ~the~ worst ratings of the season with an average of around 1.5/2 or so....

Maybe I am just a sick individual but I laughed my ass off at this show.

There were some auditioners who were god-awful, but thought they were awesome that got ripped to shreds by the judges. They deserved it! Some copped an attitude when the judges told them they were terrible. These kids were delusional. Did you see the guy who sang Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen?

I also thought they were letting to many people go on to Hollywood some of them weren't that great, but what do I know? I'm no Paula Abdul.

I guess I'm a sick individual as well because I couldn't stop laughing. This show is pretty good (also a big ratings winner) and I'm glad the judges let loose on those who couldn't sing. They needed to be told the truth...plain and simple. I agree they let too many people through, but they're going to cut the group down to 30 tonight, so that should weed the good, but not good enough people out. Overall, a really good reality show.

Count me amoung the sick then. I LMAO at this show. Oh, the really cocky ones who had way more ego then talent were the BEST!

I thought a few were given a bit of a pass. The Guy who sang Queen was awesome!! LOL! How about the girl and her Mom who traveled by bus from city to city for the auditons and then kept missing them. She finally made it in Miami ( last stop) and had nothing prepared, so she sang some made up crap off the top of her head and sang it off key?? I loved it.

I would have liked for them to have spent a little more time letting us get to know these people, maybe they'll do that. tonight.

Best line from the show

" this is my first auditon"

" and hopefully your last"

*raising my hand to be counted among the sick*

I missed this show when it came on at 8:30 pm (I think) but someone had mentioned it in chat so I found it on a late feed from 11:30 to 1 am. I figured I would catch the first little bit of it and see what it was like before I fell asleep. I laughed so much that I ended up watching the entire show. It had to be good to keep me awake until 1 am when I had to work in the morning.

Throughout the entire show I kept thinking to myself, I wish Buggy was here to watch this with me. We would have had a blast laughing. The judge's comments were cracking me up. I've read some of my favorites here and I wish I could remember the others but I think the lack of sleep erased them from my memory!

>How about the girl and her Mom who traveled by bus

That was priceless! Totally clueless!

Sticks, I LOVED the Bhohemian Rhapsody idiot. So did the judges even though he sucked. I agree that they seem to let too many in that were marginal.

Did you see the kid that was following them around the country and auditioned 3 times in 3 cities? Each time they slammed him.

As far as Fox's experiments in human cruelty go, this is one of the more entertaining. Here's one of my favorite exchanges from last night:

"How do you think you did?"
"I think I could've been a little louder."
"The last thing that needed was to be a little louder."

I also loved the girl who, upon finding out that she had made the first cut, ran towards the table, slipped, and somehow ended up *underneath* the table. But then again, I actually enjoyed America's Funniest Home Videos years ago.

One thing that I really loved was the contestants giving the big "HECK YOU" right back to the judges, especially that hispanic guy who was told he still needed to lose at least 100 pounds to have any shot. He threw it all right back at them, and it was great TV.

And at least they're honest about the fact that it's all about the "look". When the large African American girl sang Aretha Franklin (IMHO, she was one of the best *singers* there), they flat out told her she wouldn't make it because of her look. Then they admitted that even Aretha Franklin wouldn't make it in this contest.

I wonder how much fun this will be now that the decisions are out of the judges' hands and in the callers' hands, though. But the first two episodes were pretty hecking cool.

Sic 'em, uglycat.

Caution: Rant approaching

Okay, so in her "prime" Paula could dance pretty good but who ever told her she could sing anyway? Do you remember her songs from her day like "straight up now tell me"? Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard while at the same time being weak and ineffectual. Does she think she was once an idol? Do you know anyone who bought her records?
Yeah yeah, she was a Laker's girl and she slept with someone in an LA talent scouts office. SO WHAT! Who is she to judge talent anyway? She doesn't even qualify as a poor man's Janet Jackson.

The guy Peter really seems to know what he's talking about though.

This one time, at Disneyland...

There are these rafts that drive you to Tom Sawyer island and me, my friend Lauren and her boyfriend Brian all jumped on, then all these suits did and they closed the raft so the "star" they were escorting could have a private-ish raft. It was Paula, her old-world parents and Emilio's kids. That was back when we all thought we were little punk rockers, so we were more excited to see Emilio's kids than Paula.

Sorry, did I go off topic?

You were that close to Paula and Emilio? I bet you didn't wash your eyeballs for a week.
Imagine that, standing on a boat ride withing a breath away from Miss Paula Abdul. Could you imagine if you were friends with her and could drop by her house anytime? I'll bet she's just a wonderful friend to have.
It's almost enough to drive me absolutley mental just thinking about it.

Actually, Paula Abdul is the PERFECT judge for this show. She's a great example of a media-created superstar. Talent is secondary to the look, which is what American Idol is all about.

I watched the first round of 10 semim-finalists or whatever last night, 6/18, and I guess they announce which three make it in the next one. The judges all liked the last contestant, this guy named Christopher, who was terrible, IMHO. I like the girl who sang "Crazy," even though the judges dinged her for choosing that song. The girl who did Whitney Houston was also good, and the black guy with long dreads and no shirt had a good voice, but his look is LAAAME! Finally, the rocker chick who sang jazz was a'ight. Any other input out there?

ps. This show is much better than Popstars, Making the Band, etc.

I thought that Christopher was the best of the guys, personally. I thought that the American Public made a great choice with the first two (Tamyra and Ryan), but their choice of Jim as the third? That was a shocker! I really gotta wonder if that was more than a little backlash against Simon's "If you win, this contest is a failure" comment on Tuesday.

The problem with the Whitney Houston girl was that she didn't sing a Whitney Houston song, she imitated Whitney Houston. She did a good imitation, but that's it. And that's what a *lot* of these people seem like. Very good karaoke singers, but not much more.

Tamyra was the first girl who sang Tuesday night. African American girl, short hair in cornrows, wore all white or silver, I think.

Ryan is the girl who sang the cabaret-style number.

Jim is the guy with deaf parents who wears glasses. Kinda gives off a Clark Kent vibe.

Hope that helps.

Part of Jim's problem was he had to follow Tamyra, who was simply amazing. That had to shake his confidence a little, and any of those contestants following her would have seemed a lot more ordinary.

I agree though, it was definitely a pity vote, after what Simon said.

I'm really hoping that Christopher gets the "wild card" slot, but I wonder if they'll go with the Lenny Kravitz look-alike, because he's got more of the "look".

I'm surprised the 17 year old curly haired white chick (was there enough adjectives in that) that Simon gave a hard time to for hogging the stage in the first go around didn't make it.
I'll be glad when it's narrowed down because I suck at names!

Also, I wonder if Jim making it thru will clue Simon in that he needs to tone down the tongue lashings. My favorit part of the show, but obviously it's pissing off alot of the viewers.

See, I like Simon, because he's honest. Brutally honest, but honest nonetheless. Unlike Paula and, to a certain extent, Randy, he doesn't sugarcoat things. He tells you exactly what he's thinking and he tells it like it is, and if you don't like it, well heck you.

Problem is, most of America can't handle that sort of brutal honesty.

I'd have to agree with that. Tamyra was so good that all the rest of them were afterthoughts. The caberet singer was good, but should have been second to Tamyra. BUT....I thought that Jim sucked each time he was on, not just following Tamyra in the last round. I wa continually surprised when he'd be advanced.

Best line by one of the performers: After being told that he'd do well in a Chilean Karaoke Bar, the guy who had been insulted said, "Wow, I hope there are a lot of Chileans voting tonight."

Right Dark Lotus.

I also think that voters are affected by the editing. Jim has been a focal point of every episode he has appeared in. Some of the other contestants have barely been seen. Of course voters are going to vote for someone they "know" rather than a Chris who I hadn't seen at all until the third episode.

I don't want to say this show is fixed. But, I think it is clear who the editors want us to vote for.

Absolutely this show is, at least, biased. Jim has a great story behind him and has a very "safe" look. He's a fairly generic looking white boy, the glasses make him look just that much "safer", while the spikey blond hair makes him look enough like a "rebel" for the young girls out there. It's the perfect Backstreet Boy/ NSync look that is palatable to all, offensive to none.

Saw an interview with Simon on one of the entertainment news shows ( last week) and it made more sense why he is so brutally hard on these folks. Since he is going to be the one Producing the new star, he wants the best. Turns out mean old Simon is going to spending a couple mil on this person turning them into a Star. Doesn't seem so mean after all. Besides he is funny.

Jim is not that talented. Ok so he sings ok , but he has no charisma. Definately the pity case. There were a couple others who should have had that spot.

Am I the only one who who threws things at my TV and yelled at the girl who sang Daydream Believer?? I wanted to slap her.

35. "RE: Mean Simon"
That girl who sang "Daydream Believer" was pretty bad. And Jim is definitely making it on the Anti-Simon backlash viewer votes. I think Chris may make it as wild card, and though I dogged him earlier, he wasn't so bad. Last week I didn't vote, but this week maybe I will. My friend and I were trying to decide if Ryan is a Latina. Anybody know?

36. "Ryan/Tiffany"
I don't know her heritage. But "Ryan Starr" was actually named Tiffany something on the first episode when she tried out in LA. I guess she thought she would have a better chance of becoming the American Idol as Ryan not Tiffany.
