Fire Damages Hollywood Studio
Tue, Dec 17, 2002 06:12 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - An early morning fire damaged a Hollywood production facility Tuesday, possibly imperiling footage from an upcoming ABC reality series.

The fire started shortly after midnight Tuesday (Dec. 17) at the Hollywood Center Studios. No one was hurt.

Damage was confined to a 30,000-square-foot building that sits outside the main gates of the facility. Along with the building itself, computers, editing equipment and film and videotape footage were damaged, according to a report by CBS' Los Angeles affiliate.

Among the damaged tapes was footage from "Celebrity Mole: Hawaii," a version of the ABC reality series scheduled to premiere Wednesday, Jan. 8. Stone Stanley Productions, which produces the show, has offices at the studio.

In a statement, the company says it's still assessing the damage and is "doing everything in our power to keep the show on schedule."

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet.

I knew those non-Alex Baldwin brothers were competitive, but I never thought they'd stoop to this...

They are actors (well, sort of) - I'm sure they could do a reshoot.

4. "Bad news on the fire front"
I wrote a summary of this article for the "Mole News" page, but I'm still waiting for Webby to post it. So, while waiting, here's the link:

http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/65005.htm

and here's the article, which extensively quotes Scott Stone from Stone Stanley, the producers of the Mole series. Bad news. The whole show may be in jeopardy.

COOKED ‘MOLE'?
By MICHAEL STARR
------------------------------------------------------------

December 19, 2002 --

A studio fire in Hollywood has thrown ABC's "Celebrity Mole: Hawaii" into chaos.

The offices of Stone Stanley Entertainment, which produces the show, were heavily damaged by water in the battle against the blaze - meaning that all the "Celebrity Mole" videotapes were soaked just three weeks before the show's Jan. 8 premiere.

"I don't want to panic," Stone Stanley president Scott Stone told The Post. "We're optimistic that we have backup we can find somewhere.

"We won't know for sure until sometime in the next 48 hours ," he said.

ABC says it has no plans to pull the show and believes the series can be rescued.

"We have every confidence in Stone Stanley and are optimistic that the show will proceed as planned," said an ABC spokesman.

"Celebrity Mole," hosted by Ahmad Rashad, will feature Corbin Bernsen, Stephen Baldwin, Kim Coles, Frederique, Kathy Griffin, Michael Boatman and Erik von Detten - trying to discover which one of them was "planted" to sabotage the group's plans.

Meeting the deadline to produce the Jan. 8 show is one thing - but Stone said "it's always possible" that successive episodes could be irretrievably lost.

"Right now, each tape is being individually inspected at great expense," he said.

"We're committed to making our Jan. 8 premiere date. It's frightening. We literally finished the first episode this week, and now it's just delayed."

If no subsequent shows can be found - or edited in time - presumably the network will have to delay or cancel the series.

Stone said the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on the second floor of Hollywood Center Studios - with water from the firemens' hoses flooding the first floor, which houses Stone Stanley's tapes and equipment.

"What I saw was just disastrous - there was a foot-and-a-half of water there," he said.

"We just have to get the show done. Considering this was heavily covered on the local news, we got a lot of calls from the network counting on us to do our job."

Stone said that the cause of the blaze is still unknown. A blown transformer was originally suspected.

Since I published that link, though, E! Online has come out with a more positive spin on the future of Celebrity Mole: Hawaii.

http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,11009,00.html

which includes these comments:

Meeting the January 8 airdate will be difficult but not impossible, insists Stone. "We have about 100 hours of tape for every episode, so if a scene is missing that's not crucial to the storyline we should be able to cut around it," he said.

Producers have reassured their celebrity contestants that they still plan to go ahead with the wrap-up reunion episode, which will be shot on location mid-January.

So ... we shall see. Don't make plans for January 8th just yet.

5. "RE: Bad news on the fire front"
I saw the commercial for the show tonight during America's Funniest Home Videos (err.. am I still supposed to be boycotting that show or whatever?). I can't help but wonder why they'd air it if there was still a chance that they might not be able to show it. I am taking it as good news.

7. "Well..."
Here's an update from today's "Starr Report" in the NY Post:

http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/65242.htm

Can they dig out of their ‘Mole' hole?

The saga of "Celebrity Mole: Hawaii" continues.

Last week we wrote about how the future of the show, scheduled to debut Jan. 8 on ABC, was thrown into chaos when a fire broke out in the Hollywood production studios of show producer Stone Stanley Entertainment. Water from firemens' hoses soaked the "Celebrity Mole" videotapes (and Stone Stanley computers).

A Stone Stanley spokesman said Friday that the company is "feeling confident" the Jan. 8 premiere episode will be ready for air. "We're assessing over 2,500 tapes, so it's too early to tell about the other ," he said. "Timing is the biggest problem we have. We think it's fortuitous that ABC gave us arguably the best timeslot in January following ‘The Bachelorette' - and we don't want to do anything to mess that up."

"Celebrity Mole," hosted by Ahmad Rashad, features Corbin Bernsen, Frederique, Erik von Detten, Kathy Griffin, Kim Coles, Michael Boatman and Stephen Baldwin.

8. "William Baldwin"
Sorry, it was his brother William who co-starred with Kurt Russell in "Backdraft."

One newspaper is mocking Stephen about this, though:

Tim Goodman, SF Chronicle:

A moment of silence, please: "Celebrity Mole," which is supposed to air Jan. 8, had half of its videos ruined during a fire and flood. Good God no! Say you didn't lose any precious Stephen Baldwin moments.
