Recap: The usual blah blah. Teams dodge crocodiles while waterskiing (the hockey brothers) and paddling Venetian-style (all other teams) in the river. Pam and Winnie get eliminated.

We are still in Botswana for the moment. 70% of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert.

Here's Phil... giving the clue to the Hockey Brothers at 5:55 am. We're off to Zurich, Switzerland!

Bates and Anthony talk about how it's been so great for them to run this race together as they've spent most of their years playing in different places.

All teams are together on one flight to go to Switzerland. They find a conductor at the airport and the clue tells them to get to Grindelwald. Teams have to figure out how to get there, and they soon figure out the train is the best way to go.

Hockey brothers putting on the full-court press on their flirting with the country singers while on the train.

At the Bern train station... two teams (Internet hosts, Moms) miss the train to take them to Grindelwald.

We're now in Grindelwald. A sign says that a shepherd will come at 8:55 in the morning to give them their next clue. It's pitch-black so the teams are in for a long wait.

Spectacular scenery in the morning. Definitely makes me miss living in Banff, Alberta.

Shepherd arrives on a sled-cycle, whatever it's called. Clue tells teams to take a train to Kleine Scheldegg and to find a hotel called Bellevue. The producers could simply have saved a lot of money by staying in the USA and directing them to the Bellevue located in New York...

Anyhoo, they are to meet up with a guide and a Saint Bernard. I hope there's some strong liquor in that little barrel around its neck.

Wynona is having a little meltdown right now, having to wait almost a hour for the next train and putting heat pads on her frozen fingers.

I see you also read the Harry Potter books. I was thinking of Dumbledore's childhood friend (and crush, according to J.K. Rowling) Grindelwald when I heard the name first mentioned. I wonder if that's where Rowling got the name for her character.

Anyway, Chuck & Wynonna are gone due to a failure of Racing 101: read the clue.

4. "RE: TAR 22 - Episode 8 - East Coast Spoiler Thread"
We're back... Chuck talks about how he feels bad about egging on Wynona to keep up.

Teams ooh and ahh at the scenery on a bright sunny day while riding the train.

At Kleine now... beautiful Saint Bernards. I think I want one...

Teams are to take their new pet via train up to the "Top of Europe", Jungfraujoch. 11,333 feet high. They have to deliver the dog to a search guide then they go off in search for a clue at the Sphinx tour site. The country singers can't get their terrified dog to follow along with them onto the train, and finally resort to half-dragging, half-carrying him onto the train. Dog is thankful, though, as he's licking both girls on their faces (hopefully it doesn't get poisoned from all the makeup on the girls' faces).

Now at the top of the mountain, they're walking through a tunnel to the top of the mountain. The snow is up to their waists in some areas.

They get their clues. One person has to climb the north face of the Eiger mountain and pick up a Travelocity gnome while the other gets to enjoy the view from an observation window. This should be a huge advantage for Bates, considering his hockey background, used to the cold, and overall athleticism compared to the others.

Sure enough, Bates flew right through this task and got the gnome rather quickly. Clue at the bottom of gnome tells the teams to travel by train to the Grindelwald Grund train station and then cross the Lutschine Bruggli bridge and follow the yodeling sound from the Alphorn to their next clue.

After Bates, Katie is next to do the climbing. Beth is up after her. The two of them are able to catch up to Bates and Anthony. Fourth to do the climb is Jennifer, and then Wynona. To no one's surprise, Wynona is struggling.

Meanwhile, the train has arrived to pick up the first four teams while Wynona is still struggling and Joey/Meghan waiting for their turn.

We're back with a struggling Wynona. She admits that she's freaked, but is determined that she can do it. She finally gets it done!

Meghan is off to get the gnome now. Mullethead and Wynona are waiting for the train, and he says good job, girl.

The first four teams follow the yodeling and get their next clue. Here go go, the flying balls of cheese! Flashback to Luke taking a massive wipeout. It's a switchback and teams must carry a total of 200 pounds of cheese (each block is 50 pounds) on sleds at the bottom of the hill to get their next clue. The first time this took place, there was no snow ... now we got snow!

Teams are struggling to climb up the mountain - none have the proper footwear for that type of environment while also trying to lug a big wooden sled.

Bates/Anthony are the first to try going down the hill, each taking two fifty pound blocks. They seem to be doing well so far without threatening to maim any locals (or each other) with flying balls of cheese.

Back to Chuck/Wynona and Joey/Meghan. They're now on the train to take them to the next clue.

Mona/Beth and the country singers are copying the hockey brothers' method of sliding down the hill in front of the sled. Predictably, they wipe out. Meanwhile, Bates and Anthony complete the task and get a clue telling them to go to the pit stop at the Bodmi Snowboard & Ski School. Three women are playing on the accordions while sitting beside Phil outside - without gloves! Now that's a real Swiss miss.

Country singers repeatedly wipe out while trying to go downhill. Max and Katie are the second to finish the task, followed by Mona and Beth. Country singers still struggling to get down with the cheese balls. These three should all be safe as the final two teams are well back and have yet to start climbing up to the top of the hill for the cheese ball task.

Bates and Anthony arrive at the pit stop first for the third or fourth straight episode, and they win a trip.

9. "Finish Order"
Sorry, I'm back now... some kid stuff to take care of.

There's Chuck using his head to push Wynona by her ass up the hill, while also carrying both sleds himself. At least this is more dignified than grabbing her by the hooch to lift her up into the boat a few eps ago.

Here's the finish order at the pit stop:

1. Bates and Anthony - trip to Bora Bora.
2. Mona and Beth

A herd of cows stroll onto the road to block the other teams traveling to the pit stop.

3. Max and Katie
4. Caroline and Jennifer

Joey and Meghan finish the cheese ball task. Chuck and Wynona are still at the top of the hill, and they've resorted to simply rolling the cheese balls down the hill without bothering with the sled.

Editing making it look like Joey/Meghan are lost and taking a long time to figure their way out, while Chuck/Wynona seem to have found a cab quickly. Oh, the suspense...

Fifth to arrive - Chuck and Wynona, somehow they came from behind to overtake Joey/Meghan! However, the clue said they must properly transport their cheese via sled. 30 minute penalty.

5. Joey and Meghan are told they're the last to arrive, but are checked in at 5th place because of the penalty.

6. Chuck and Wynona - Philiminated.

Tough way to go out. Chuck talks about how he's proud of her, but Wynona is crying and apparently not buying what Chuck's telling her.

While it was certainly time for Chuck and Wynona to go, that penalty seemed very arbitrary. Did they penalize the teams last time for dropping the cheese? I don't recall that.

I don't think any teams intentionally threw their cheeses down the hill the first time in Season 13 - if I recall, all of the teams initially used the wooden backpacks until they fell apart. I think it depended on what the clue said, i.e. it specifically said to use the sleds.

Checked a clip. I think in the summer the cheeses often rolled off in directions that could take a fair amount of time to retrieve, and none of the rolls seemed deliberate.

In the snow they only went a little bit so you could control and make it a lot faster to do it that way.

Nope, there was no detour shown in this episode.

A good thing - they'd probably have had something involving trains and another bunching point for the detour.

Felt bad for Wynona this time. High altitude, thin air, it was clear to me she was being hit by the environment and wasn't thinking clearly. Neither were Chuck, Joey and Meghan, but it was worst for Wynona.

Anyway, nice they can finally head to a bungalow for couple time.

Teams take a plunge off a building while held up only by a cable, complete with camera special effects of wide-open mouths.

They go through a tunnel with all sorts of disorienting flashing lights and one describes it as a nightmare.
