This piece was difficult; it's real life stuff. Perhaps too heavy for RP, perhaps not. This was certainly not my usual writing style and sorry to disappoint my "Boy in the Bed" fans, but far different than that SSC entry. My Brother
The room so still, tubes everywhere,
Family all round, sobs fill the air.
I look down at my brother and still I see,
A kid filled with love, as he always would be.
The events of the day whirl in my mind,
Oh life, you can be so cruel and unkind.
The sounds of sirens still fresh and clear,
How did this happen to my brother dear?
Happy one moment, Oh what a gentle soul,
Now in the bed, events beyond our control.
A car moving too fast, round the corner it came,
I’m sure the driver never intended to maim.
The screeching of tires as she tried to brake,
The sickening thud, the ensuing heartbreak.
An ambulance rounding corners, faster than fast,
Up on two wheels, will his life last?
Emergency surgery gives him a chance,
Now we wait, Lord, please break his trance.
Day after day, he lies still in the bed,
How I long to say, things left unsaid.
The coma it seems, never to end,
From it will, he ever ascend?
As I talk to him sometimes, I still can see,
The way he would run and squeal with glee.
Oh little child, asleep in your own space,
Come back to us soon, I need your embrace.
Finally one day he opens his eyes,
A sight greater than the brightest sunrise!
Years pass by and my brother’s awake,
He can find wonder in every snowflake.
No, he will never walk or even think clearly,
But he’s my brother, I still love him dearly.
That awful day, no, it was not the end,
Though much is lost, I still have my brother… my friend.
