"So - Here's what happened today...." |
LAST EDITED ON 10-15-01 AT 03:11 PM (EST)You guys are not going to BELIEVE what some asshole in my office did in the name of a prank! First, let me explain - many of my co-workers are very spoiled and immature, and don't get that while there is appropriate humor, there is also humor that goes over the boundaries of good taste, and could even be quailified, legally, as a "hoax" since Sept. 11th. Our office also allows people to come in and work on weekends. So, bright and early this morning, we all begin arriving to work. I'm heading down the main corridor, and Jen, one of the girls I work with, is in front of me. She works further down, so when I get to my cubicle, she continues onto where she sits. As she passes my boss' office, I hear her say "That's not even CLOSE to funny!" I don't think too much of it, and I proceed to head into my boss' office to check what her first meeting is. Suddenly, I see what Jen was talking about. There, on the floor in front of the office across from my boss', is a BIG trail of white powder! I already notice that someone has walked through it, and that the footsteps are already being spread all over the office in the other direction! So, I run and get our office manager, Jonathan, and I very discreetly say to him "Uhhh... Jonathan? Someone has a very sick idea of a practical joke in front of the office across from Linda." He takes a look and immediately calls our maintainence woman to vacume it up before anyone sees it and we have a mass panic on our hands! I mean, it was a really big obvious pile, so it was clear that it was someone's idea of a very sick joke, but you never know who's going to see the white powder and freak out! I also pointed out to them that it was already being spread around the office by a couple people who walked through it without noticing it! So, it all got vacumed up wherever it was, but when Linda came in and saw it, she was furious!!! So was Jonathan, so was the woman who vacumed it up, so was I! I mean, yes, they determined pretty fast that it was only talcum powder, but the last thing we need is people panicking - it's not funny and it's a really cruel joke in light of the attacks! People are still really scared, and with a couple of new anthrax scares/mailings each day, no one needed to see this! Soooo, basically, since the whole country is under high alert, they're investigating it. Yup, through legal channels - whoever thought they were so goddamn funny will probably be fired over that. Right now, that's not a joke - it's tantamount to a hoax, so our bosses are treating it as such as soon as they find out who did it! And isn't it "nice" how our "humor" has come back to us after 20 or so of us here in the office witnessed the attacks up close??? (That was HEAVY sarcasm, by the way!) HOW could someone think that was funny? In case I didn't mention, three of my co-workers lost someone in the attacks. One girl lost her husband, another her brother, a third her mother (she was in Washington and worked at the Pentagon - the other two were WTC). Myself, I thank God every day that I still have my brother, as he was out in the street a block away from the WTC when the towers collapsed. And these anthrax attacks, whether they're some random nut doing copycat crimes or if they are linked to the terrorits, HOW could anyone see that as humor???? Thanks for letting me vent, gang! I'm very pissed, and so are the small amount (thank God it was small!) of people who saw that today! It's insensitive and cruel. ****************************************

Oh Itz - I'm so sorry you and your co-workers had to go through this on top of everything else you've gone through. Some people are such idiots! Hope that they catch and punish whoever played this "prank" at your office. The small town where my parents live (pop. 1200) had their post office shut down yesterday because of a white powder scare. Hopefully it was an over-reaction and not a "practical joke" by someone. Either way it will be a cause of great concern for a number of the residents of the town (my parents included who will not likely want to open their mail now). Stay safe... lt

There's a lot of pretty stupid people out there in this world and it's amazing to see the differences in people -- one person could take weeks to recover from something like this, while another can just let go and move on after one day. This type of thing in your office is simply over the line and disrespectful, and I hope whoever thought of this gets caught.I don't know what the laws are down below the border, but up here, if people are caught playing a prank or making a hoax about something like this, they can be charged and jailed for up to five years. Just yesterday, a man was arrested after he had planned to send three envelopes coated with salt and white powder -- it wasn't very well done and people could easily have figured it wasn't anthrax -- to the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister and to Celine Dion (guess he's not a fan). They're planning to throw the book at this guy -- even if he never actually succeeded in mailing it out right to the prime minister, it's still an offence punishable by 5 years in jail. I do wonder how it's like at work for a good friend of mine -- she works in the mailroom of the federal government's Human Resources and Development department so they're bound to get tons of mail and you never know if there's some crackpot who's a little pissed that the office (where my wife also works) rejected his employment insurance benefits... "What's wrong with her?" "Oh, it's gonna blow up, dude... in 5 minutes, dude. It's gonna hit the (bleep) ceiling." "It is?" "Oh yeah." (maniacal laughter) Anthony (talking to Adrian) on LC, Oct. 9/01
