"Knoxville Newspaper Article..."
I didn't know which thread to put this in because it tells about the ritual, talks about tribal councils and talks about Bubba turning over the boat before they get to shore in the opening sequence.

Blountville 'Survivor' stays afloat

By TERRY MORROW
September 16, 2004

Just getting off the boat is an adventure for Blountville, Tenn., resident Travis "Bubba" Sampson when he makes his debut as a contestant on "Survivor: Vanuatu" (airing 8 tonight on WVLT, Channel 8).

The farmer/former pro wrestler from upper East Tennessee manages to tip over his "canoe," sending him, a fellow castaway and an island native into the water before they can depart for land.

"(Host) Jeff (Probst) informs (us) that we're going to climb down the (arrival) boat and get in these canoes," Sampson, who is often referred to as "Bubba," tells the cameras. "I thought, 'Man, that's great' because I didn't learn to swim until six weeks before I come here.

"I would have been spooked if I knew I had to swim (to land)."

The 33-year-old, married father of four is first seen wearing a T-shirt with Bob Barker's face on it. At least he knows how to make the CBS network happy.

Before the show's first episode is finished, Sampson, a devout Christian, drinks muddy water and has pig blood smeared on his face during a ritual ceremony.

This latest game of "Survivor" will contain twists in the traditional game. Like an earlier edition, the tribal lines are drawn between men and women, for now. Sampson's tribe is called "Lopevi."

Also, there are reports that tribal councils won't always be held at the end of a game. They will be conducted whenever the producers see fit, at any time.

This is being done to shake up alliances.

If Sampson can avoid tribal council eliminations and remain on the island for 39 days, he will win $1 million. The preview CBS provided did not reveal the final vote at tribal council.

Now this would be a hot little tidbit if it holds out to be true! Time will tell... Thanks Vols!

I wonder if this is before or after the flip? Not that it matters I guess.
