"This show is such a ........"
LAST EDITED ON 09-26-01 AT 02:18 AM (EST)

Steaming pile of sh!t. One of the aspects of reality television that makes it so compelling is the cast, complex individuals that the audience can rally around (or at least have a response to, negative or positive). Who the hell cares if these losers hook up or win a trip? The only guy who should win, probably won't. Nice, mellow guys never win these things. Truly, does anyone really want to see any of these people (besides Michael) win anything? yuk! I feel sullied for having watched it at all.
*NS cringes, shudders, tries to continue*

Geez, how many weeks, days, hours, seconds before Survivor III starts? Anyone know?

Well, "Enterprise" starts tonight at 10 p.m., at least in the Boston area... about 7.3 hours from now.

I taped LC, E-1 and E-2, and watched them back-to-back last night.

Frankly is wasn't as "sleazy" as I had feared it would be.

In that, there were NOT alot of "bedroom berth sexual activity" scenes shown....or different people "smooching it up" in hidden nooks of the ship.

I would have liked more dialogue of the entire group at dinner, for instance, to see how people interact with people they are NOT paired with.

And ONE thing I would point out is these GIRLS are spending way too much time together "comparing their looks"!!! I would be talking to the MEN!!!

Several comments and observations:

First of all, congratulations, NS--you may have broken a record by posting before adding content so soon after joining us. Takes some of us weeks/months before we fall for that slippery Enter key. . . And while I agree with your post, I'll clue you in on a little secret--it's those ambiguous, empty posts that draw the best response around here! (Just ask IceCat about "t")

Sleaze? Yes, so far it doesn't seem like a real FUX show, does it?

I agree--needs more evidence of interaction. . . but then, that would require more than a 20-second clip! The editing is not great. Then again, maybe they ARE acting like Jr. High kids, spending most of their time giggling with their pals about what the opposite sex is all about. . . Maybe as they become more familiar with each other, they'll be less tentative about interacting.

Of COURSE anyone with a brain would be cozying up to the men. . . but we have to think about the mentality of the people who would choose to go on a show like this--I doubt that most of them actually had the presence of mind to consider getting a STRATEGY. . . This is the kind of group that really needs the benefit of having seen the series first to realize what it's going to involve. I do believe some of them actually thought it really WAS about finding a mate (just as some of us thought S1 was really going to be about surviving!)

Marginally-related: I noticed that Laura made a point of staying out late to maximize her own interactions--was she the only girl out swimming with the guys? Either the "staying up latest" strategy is a faulty one (a-hem), or she failed to endear herself to that group. Or the guys are so easily manipulated, they believed everything that whiner Anthony said about her. . .

6. "The stay-up-late strategy"
I think Mike's idea of staying up late is a good strategy. Bonding with people gaurantees you the most safety in a supposed dating-game like this. It would also be a good strategy not to get too sexually involved with people just to try to win, but making solid friendships with both sexes could carry you a long way.

The late-strategy probably didn't work for Laura because she was perceived as getting sexual with both Anthony and Tony, so the guys didn't trust her and that made her into an enemy of all the guys.

Of course, maybe all the guys wanted her so they figured it would be easier to get rid of her to avoid arguments.

7. "RE: This show is such a ........"
Well thanks GT. I assume you know it was entirely accidental ;)
However, I feel compelled to explain why this show rubs me the wrong way. I think it's because it purports to be a show about finding a mate, making a love match, and the "if you watch, you might just see a little bootie action" kind of thing. But it's really just a bunch of (mostly) blond losers being catty and calculating -- something they're all pretty well versed in. At least with shows like Survivor and TAR, there is an element of legitimate competition that requires skill, not silicone, talent, not tans, and while ultimately there is a cash prize at the end of all of these shows, there's just something not right about the premise of LC. Even though we're all pretty ruthless when it comes to the media whores who go on these shows, I couldn't help but feel horrible for those people who got rejected so publicly. Things like rejection hurt, and using them for entertainment is repulsive and inappropriate.
*NS steps off pulpit*

Two weeks from now, I won't even be thinking about this dumb show. Someone promise me they'll go by swiftly!!!!

NS's pulpit, meet GT's soapbox. I think you two will get along quite well as evidenced by the chatter in this thresd. Looking forward to more of your insights and rants, NS...

I actually only watched the first ep of LC (and only because Shakes was going to be on), but decided to try "Lost" on Wednesday instead. I'm not sure I like that one either. I typically don't watch FUX, simply because it brings together all of the lowest common denominators. Forget "Who Wants To Marry a Psycho Millionaire", I seem to recall a show called "Guess What! We're getting married" which was basically about four women in relationships with men who were not yet ready to get married. The men all had decent reasons for wanting to wait, yet these women went out, bought gowns, flowers, rings, etc. and lured their boyfriends out onto a stage (the guys thought their girlfriends were getting makeovers and this was the "reveal" part) then, with cameras rolling, a studio audience watching, and the host standing there, the women got on their knees and asked their boyfriend to marry them. It was just awful. I felt so bad for the guys. Did anyone else see this? Well, LC is a friggin masterpiece compared to that.
GT -- nice to meet ya --

Yes, I remember that steaming pile of shit that aired a year ago, "Guess What! We're getting married"... My wife and I absolutely could not believe that show and we had a talk about ensuring that type of thing could and should never happen to us and stick to the asking-each-other-in-the-traditional way, and this was to apply to anything such as "Candid Camera" or "SpyTV."

Edited to clarify which hopeless, godforsaken show I was referring to

OMG! They've done that show before?! My daughter and I ran into one that sounded just like that in the last month or so! (only this one must've had 8 or 12 couples. . .) Bless my 12 year-old--she was mortified to see those women humiliated--both by the refusals AND the 45-second weddings--as well as the behind-the-scenes crap with the shell-shocked men. . . I cannot believe they actually would've resurrected something so ill-conceived!

And Pépé--have to laugh at your agreement. . . my family has also made a point of outlawing any thoughts of volunteering for those remodel-your-neighbor's-room-into-a-nightmare shows (à la BBC's Changing Rooms). Gotta admit, though--if Alan Titschmarsh were to show up and completely re-do my yard into a garden showplace, THAT would be an acceptable foray into reality teevee. . . (yes, there might actually be something that could entice me to appear on camera for 60 seconds. . . Do you have any idea how impossible the weeds and bugs are in FL?)

ROFL--yes, Pépé, I DID catch the "pulpit" remark immediately! Finally--a kindred spirit! (Might take some of the heat off me, huh?)

And NS--your remarks about the premise of the show sound JUST like me during S1. . . I was so pissed off that the show WASN'T about SURVIVING, but more about office-type politics and backstabbing. . . (and I was SURE Dicque wouldn't win. . . color me chagrained!)

I also agree that the potential for really destroying someone's self-esteem is greater in this set-up than in any of the other "reality" shows--when I realized we'd be subjected to lingering hurt from childhood atrocities and such, I knew it wasn't going to be the "high-class fun & games" that The Clown has been promoting it as. . . (Survivor without the hardship? Gimme a break!) It's one thing to have 16 totally self-absorbed, soulless feebs who are so desperate for ho'dom that they're oblivious to "hurt," but there seem to be some people who really did think it was about finding a match. . .

And I thought a million was too little for what they go through on Survivor. . . THIS show is downright insulting in the way they've assessed the value of what they're giving up for the "privelege" of participating. They don't even stand much of a chance for capitalizing on endorsements, as that seems to have taken a huge dive since S1. If it's any consolation, I have to wonder if it's drawing any kind of respectable numbers outside the SB community--between the lousy promotion, half-assed scheduling, and the glut of cheapskate teevee, I'll be very surprised if "the maiden voyage" isn't "the final voyage," as well. (Waiting for the Kool Kat's next report on the Nielson's! LMAO) Then again, FUX keeps rehashing the Who Wants to be the Next Darva Conger? crap, so anything's possible. . .

I don't know if I can promise the two weeks will pass swiftly, though. . . something tells me this is going to have some kind of "dog years" twist that makes it feel like it's interminable. . .

12. "Wow. . ."
LAST EDITED ON 09-28-01 AT 12:18 PM (EST)

That DOES look pretty dismal! I thought people would be so glad to escape REAL reality, after the last couple-three weeks that the first episode, at least, would do fairly well. . . They really would've done better to wait with this as a mid-season replacement, wouldn't they?

And if the LCII auditions actually culminate in a sequel (are they really bound to such a contract, or would there be an option to substitute another show altogether?), will they learn from their mistakes this time around?

Gee, FUX has made some real progress in the sitcom department. . . you'd think they'd make more of an effort to keep going in that direction. . . But then, the BBC has been around for eons, and they're STILL filling in the gaps with horrible, cheap-ass reality crap! Guess it beats prime-time infomercials. . .

GT

Crap. Edited to add a thank-you for reminding me to go to the main page. . . I often get such tunnelvision that I forget to go there! And for those similarly myopic people--get yer asses over there before the next episode and VOTE on the official poll! (Webby, I'm afraid you need to keep nudging us to do the right thing. . .)
