"This has the makings of a vile, vile show..."
Has anyone heard of this new ABC show called "Welcome to the Neighborhood?" Basically, seven "diverse" families are competing for a home in Austin, and the neighbors get to choose which ones get the house.

A description of the families competing for the home:
The diverse group includes African-American, Caucasian, Korean, Latino and gay families, plus one family in which husband and wife are heavily tattooed, and another in which mom and dad are devoted to the practice of Wicca, sometimes known as witchcraft or paganism.

One of the neighbors has already said he doesn't want a gay family moving in.

Am I the only one who has a problem with a show giving some snobby, rich asshats the power to choose which type of minority they'll allow to move into their pristine little neighborhood? How about this: These prissy little neighbors who are so selective about who they live next to go live in East St. Louis for three months. I'd watch that.

A kyngsladye/IceCat masterpiece.

yes, I have seen the previews. The main problem I have with the show is that the Deck is stacked, and that the neighbors will quickly realize that the Deck is stacked to make them look bigoted, and hence they will clam up and the show will become dull. This type of show would be good for one or two episodes, but not any more. My guess is the Wicans win.

ABC seems to be trying to be the network with the uplifting, warm and fuzzy reality shows because of it's success with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. My guess is it will be edited to show how these snobs all learned to be more tolerant and "love thy neighbor" no matter how bizarre.

Well, after they get rid of the gay people, at least...

"I will not tolerate a homosexual couple coming into this neighborhood," one of the neighbors, Jim Stewart, says on the show about one of the candidate families — a gay couple with an adopted baby. "I want a family similar to what we are," asserts another neighbor, John Bellamy, in a statement that would seem to dismiss at least six out of the seven candidate families.

ETA: I'm reminded of that "Trading Spouses" with that awful, awful woman who was so hateful to the lesbian.

If this follows most reality TV show formats, that's just hype to get people to watch--the potential for conflict. They WANT us to think it will be really, really controversial. That's the hook.

There's also the preview of the neighbors sitting down and discussing the lifestyle. I'm sure ABC will edit in a precious Kumbayah (or should I say Disney) moment somewhere in there.

From the website:

But with every encounter with these families, the opinionated neighbors' pre-conceived assumptions and prejudices are also chipped away, and they learn that, while on the outside we may appear different, deep inside we share many common bonds. The judges find themselves learning to see people, not stereotypes.

On the surface, yes. According to the website, it's more than that. It could potentially be very beneficial to those who watch it, by exposing the preconceptions and predjudices that many Americans share and seeing how they are overcome. It could be very thought-provoking.

We'll only know for sure if we watch it. It sounds interesting and I probably will.

Korean,
Finalists, but not the winner. Definitely can see some King of the Hill moments here.

Latino and gay families,
I would bet on one of these.

plus one family in which husband and wife are heavily tattooed, and another in which mom and dad are devoted to the practice of Wicca.
Included merely to draw in an audience. Now, if one of these families were Korean and heavily-tatooed Wiccans, we would have our winners right there.

One of the neighbors has already said he doesn't want a gay family moving in.
This fella will have the lion's share of sound bites.

Now, try to imagine a "Wife Swap" situation included and you would really have something there. Petrified white folk in every camera frame. I've actually visited East St. Louis a few times and I've only had rocks thrown at my car once. The casino on the river isn't too bad, either. So long as one of your idiot friends doesn't decide to relieve herself in a bush next to a bus stop. Those old people getting off the bus couldn't quite figure out what she was doing in there.

Why don't they have the diverse people live in the neighborhood and have to judge and pick one of the middle class white families? Now THAT would be groundbreaking!

When I saw the previews for this show, all I could think of is how un-welcome my husband and I have always felt in our neighborhood and why anyone would want to go through that is crazy.

We don't do drugs, have loud parties, (no kids yet), and we keep our place neat and clean and our 2 little doggies are very well behaved. (When they are in the back yard, we don't allow them to bark at the neighbors and I'm not joking when I tell you that they are very well trained.)

There are only 2 neighbors who don't act like we have the plague. The guy to the left of us is older and is super nice, always waving and saying hi when we are outside. The other is an older, retired couple who live kiddy-corner across the street from us. Only problem is they are snow-birds and are only here in the winter.

The people to the right of us are insensitive, are always letting their dogs run loose and who all seem to scream at each other and take off squealing their tires at all hours of the night. The people behind us are just as bad. They sit in their back porch smoking pot at all hours of the day and night, let their 2 great danes run all over the place with no leash and their yard isn't fenced in, meanwhile they are loud and are very unpleasant whenever we try to relax in our pool.

Now, we've lived there for 4 years and every day is hell. We can't wait until my husband finishes college so we can afford to move to a better place. It's not that we are in a bad neighborhood with crime and such, it's just that we have a bunch of insensitive people around us. (I haven't even mentioned the idiot who drives a black bronco that ALWAYS blares his radio so loud that you can hear him coming a mile away. This man passes our house at least 3 times a day, one of them being at around 3am every day.)

This rant leads me to the following:
If these people want to live in a "dream home in a dream neighborhood" it isn't all it's cracked up to be and I only hope they can handle living in a bowl for the rest of their lives, because these neighbors are very superficial and seem to be snobby. I don't care how much they say they might have "changed" by being on the show. Most people with predjicies (sp?) don't change them overnight. Most aren't able to change them at all! So these people who won't accept the gay couple and the black couple may get all nice and fuzzy for the cameras, but within a few years, something will happen that will land all of them in the People's Court!!!

--Donna :~)

My sister lived in a similar neighborhood (one of those freaky every-home-looks-alike neighborhoods where association regulations required every home to have an oak tree in the yard). Her experiences were similar.

I have TIVO and taped the scholar - when is shown in the previews is the gentleman who bashes the gays - giving the gay man a hug and both are crying - ie we have learned to accept them. You have to really watch it but I'm 100% sure that this ends ups with the pre-conceived notions blown all to crap

I wouldn't take the show too seriously. After all, they're trying to get as much hype around it cuz that is what will draw the viewers. My guess is the conflicts will be few and far between and the show will be a disappointment at best.

And yes, c'mon now, who wouldn't want to be able to choose their neighbors. You don't have to be the minority in the neighborhood (whether black/white/gay/straight/jehovah's witness/redneck/CFO/etc.)to be the bad neighbor. Just like litterbugs, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Btw, when is this show going to air? Also, are Rob and Amber one of the neighbors trying to move into the neighborhood????

I don't have any respect for ABC. ABC yanks shows off the air and jerks fans around all the time. Even with their hit shows - Desperate Housewives and Lost, they air repeats or pull the show for some other stupid show...

Then they have those reality shows that they pulled off the air and those that invested their time didn't even get to see who won.

I have more respect for FOX even though they air some shows I don't really care for....I just don't watch them. But when their scheduling interfered with the showing of 24, they fixed the problem the next year by not starting 24 until January and then showing it consecutively each week until conclusion. At least they have a little more respect for their fans .....boy was that a loaded statement; I bet there of plenty of you that have examples where they haven't showed respect for their fans
So far they haven't screwed me, so my feelings for ABC/FOX are just IMHO.

Have we been watching the same networks?

First off, FOX is the worst channel out there when it comes to reality shows. They have no respect for their viewers what so freakin ever! FOX has pulled 3-4 shows that I started watching just because they wanted to and they changed nights and times for the shows before pulling them off the air (without much if any notice to viewers).

ABC was very vocal about when and where their new shows would air. FOX doesn't do the same.

I am not counting putting reruns in place of new shows because all networks do this to some extent at some point in time. But, pulling shows off air at a whim has to go to FOX hands down and they do it with no explanation.

I totally disagree with you on this one.

Also, Forever Eden...you know the one...the reality show that would never end. Guess what? It did!

I gotta agree with you on this one. I have the best house possible......it's on wheels if the neighbors suck I hook up and move. Wanting to get a house doesn't mean that much to me I have had three of them and only one place had good neighbors for a few years. Having someone "consider me good enough to live near them" just doesn't top my list of things to do.

This may be for Off Topic but I don't understand people complaining and protesting something they never see.

"Our intention with 'Welcome to the Neighborhood' was to show the transformative process that takes place when people are forced to confront preconceived notions of what makes a good neighbor, and we believe the series delivers exactly that," Walt Disney Co. -owned ABC said in a statement carried by Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

Maybe the show was a learning process and by the end there were changes made in peoples lives/perceptions.

GLAAD was concerned that the gay couple might get grilled by the neighbors, while the Family Research Council was worried that the conservative neighbors might be ridiculed for their Christian beliefs.

Again, showing they are protesting something they have no idea the content. Just because there is the potential doesn't mean it would be so!

It happens all the time. From both sides. Ask Linda Ellerbe, Buster the Bunny or Dr. Laura. FTR, I wasn't a fan of the protests on Dr. Laura even though I saw GLAAD and the other's point, but in the marketplace, her show would have cratered with or without their protests because it sucked. And if the person is too vile, they'll implode (like Michael Savage on MSNBC).

While I was squeamish about the show's premise, I would have liked to have seen it and judged for myself.

eft: the spelling of Linda Ellerbe's name

My East St. Louis idea, BTW, is still up for sale. I'm waiting for your call, Fox!

Oh I know it happens on both sides all the time and that is in part why I posted. I don't understand it. As you said in the title for this thresd...potential. It has the potential to be something not good but it also has potential to do some good. If one family can be taught something out of all this maybe that isn't such a bad thing.

Probably a smart decision on Disney's part...those poor people who went through all that crap though! Man, I hope they were rewarded handsomely...

We can make fun of stupid people wanting to be rich or famous or travel around the world on reality shows, but I just don't think it's nice to make fun of people who already have disadvantages and are prejudiced against anyway.

The show that comes to mind is the Wife Swap/Trading Spouses (can't remember which) episode where the conservative woman was sent to live with a lesbian. That show prompted more conversation than most on that forum. There was some very good conversation going on about what happened.

Yes, the lesbian took some bad mouthing from the conservative but in the end the lesbian couple came out looking like a far more "normal" family than most on the show. The lesbians carried themselve with dignity and grace and the conservatives were just mean.

The show had potential to do something good and now we won't know if it could have or not.

Funny thing, there is a two page article on the show in TV Guide with a preview and everything. I guess ABC pulled the plug after TV Guide had gone to press.

Same here.

And I do wonder, who actually won the house?

I agree that it was dumb to cancel this show after such heavy promotion. Now, I probably would not have watched this show, but the network lost some points in my book for pulling it. I'm tired of every single group in the world getting upset everytime "their group" isn't portrayed correctly or something. Hmmm, I thought we had FREE SPEECH here in America! So what if the show showed homosexuals in a negative light? What about all the blacks that get shown negatively? How about the whites that are shown that way??? I don't see the "Society for the preservation of white people" out there trying to get "Black" and "gay" programming off the air. Give me a break! If a few advocate groups are able to do this so easily, it's the end of our free society as we know it!

It wasn't just GLAAD. The Family Research Council (an organization, BTW, whose leader was caught buying mailing lists from David Duke, not too far off from the "society for the preservation of white people") was also speaking out against it, saying it would paint conservative Christians in a bad light.

A kyngsladye/IceCat masterpiece.

We'll probably find out in August, when the new residents move in, who won. They do get to keep the house even though the show isn't airing.
