How can they say that frederique kept $ 80k out of the pot, when the pot only ended up being $ 17k short of the $ 250k maximum?

Well, Frederique lost $80k in the games on her own....later in the game, the games were worth more money so the producers could get the pot up to around the amount they had expected the team to earn ($250k). If they had won all of the games, the final games would've been worth less. The producers were prepared to pay $250k, and the winner was promised around that amount, so they had to increase the worth of the final few games in order to meet that mark.

that is what I was going to say. perhaps they should have worded it better, like that she was responsible for keeping 80k from going into the pot over the course of the game, but like its been said, they offered more than was the maximum just to get the pot up to a respectable level.

I never said anything at the time, but by about episode 3 i had figured out that there had already been more than $250 grand offered in the games.
