"Does anyone remember this NBC reality show???"
I cannot remember the name of this reality show... but it was on NBC a few years ago. I believe Al Trautwig was the voice host and it featured couples "racing" across the world with no cash and all they had was a satellite phone to communicate as to clues. I remembered one episode where a team had to get passage on a boat so they volunteered to be entertainers to get on. If my memory is right, the show ended with the winning team arriving at the Statue of Liberty. Anyone else remember this???

The first Amazing Race ended at the Statue of Liberty. Is that what you're thinking of?

No, the first Amazing Race ended in Queens, New York, close to the old 1964 Worlds Fair location. This was an NBC show that was Amazing Race-like, but the teams were not eliminated. I think it only consisted of four couples.

Sounds like "Lost" to me -- it premiered the same night as "The Amazing Race" and was gone within a couple of weeks (NBC burned off the remaining episodes on The Travel Channel or something)

Yes, "Lost" was the show, and it was produced by Conan O'Brien. However, I recall watching the show in its entirety on NBC, not the Travel Channel. Anyhow, thanks for all the help on refreshing my memory.

"Lost" had a great initial concept, dropping teams off in some unidentified wilderness to race each other, they initially didn't even know where they were (Mongolia). Unfortunately, once they found their way to civilization it became a poor man's "Amazing Race." I always thought they could have salvaged the concept with some revamping of the format to keep the teams in the wilderness throughout, but the concept was dropped when it failed to garner good ratings. A shame, really. In any event, several races were actually conducted, each race only lasted three or four episodes and then the next one would start. I don't recall NBC broadcasting any episodes after the initial race concluded, but they may have shuffled it around the schedule and I just missed it.

ARRRRRRR!!!!

7. "Where areyouareyouareyou? LOST!"
As mentioned elsewhere, this was "Lost". It debuted in early September, 2001, was preempted due to You Know What, then came back with the last two episodes of Drop 1. Two of the three episodes of Drop 2 were burned off near Christmas and New Year's, 2001 - a fine time to program something that nobody would watch. The middle eppie of Drop 2 never aired on NBC, but it might have aired on the Travel Channel. Each drop consisted of six players who didn't know each other beforehand, split into three teams of two. They were each dropped a long way from the U.S. with very limited supplies (including a piddling sum of cash) and a cameraman. They were commanded to get back to Liberty Island.

End explanation, begin reminiscing. I think of "The Amazing Race" as a tricked-up version of "Lost", though they were developed independently and have nothing to do with each other ("Lost" was based on a UK series of the same name). I liked the purity of it and actually preferred it to TAR, despite its faults. But I must admit the second drop was starting to lose its magic, and I probably would have gotten weary of it had there been too many more. So it's probably best that it was canceled when it was.

"This is realitybites and I approved this post."
