Personally I think he has some appeal just because he seems to beat to a different drum but I don't think he is AI material.

I'm with you, StarryLuna. I mean, he seems like a nice guy, and I think his voice has potential, but I've had a bit of vocal training in my life and he's a vocal coach's nightmare. He clenches his jaw and sings from his throat (instead of from his diaphragm). He has an nice falsetto, but he tends to push it instead of just letting it go. He teeters back and forth between an Elvis impersonation and an Aaron Neville impersonation. I can't figure out what HIS style actually is.I don't know. With some training, he could potentially be quite good. I think people really like him on a personal level. And let's face it, most people can barely carry a tune, so it's not like the general public notices half of what I just mentioned above. I get irritated when I watch him, though. But I get irritated when singers on the radio "chew" (think LeAnn Rimes singing "How do I live without CHEW..."). I'm just a stickler, I guess. By the way, one of my good friends (a guy) thinks JPL is fabulous and wants him to win. *sigh*

Well I tend to agree with you. I will say that his Beck-ish demeanor makes him stand out. To me, it's really hard to tell if he has a good voice because he dances so much and gets winded. Now my WIFE thinks he's great, not because of how he sings, but because she says he's SO CUTE! <shrug> J

I do not see the appeal of JPL at all and his jerking around the stage (i'm sorry, "dancing") is a total turn off. I understand that a lot of people were rooting for him after Simon's "pen salesman" comment and, I do agree, he has handled it quite well, turning it around to his advantage, but I think his whole "geek" shtick is just that -- a shtick. Yes, he seems sweet, etc. but for people to compare him to Beck! Lord have mercy! Beck is a genuis musician, not just a singer -- JPL is neither. I have my fingers crossed the American public will come to their senses soon (which they probably will not) and stop pushing this guy through because he is allegedly "so cute" if for nothing else than that I will not have to keep having to sit through JPL performances every week. compliments of GeorgiaBelle All happy families resemble one another, but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way

I think that JPL has a lot of charisma, personality and talent. I love his voice, and Paula didn't say that JPL was identical to Beck, she was using it as a comparison. I also like Beck and I agree with her, but hey it's a matter of opinion, some people like concieted women like Fantasia who sing like Donald Duck on crack, it's all a matter of taste.

JPL is very gimmicky. He knows how to utilize circumstances to up his chances at the title. Just think about the pen salesman thing, the dancing, and the Simon painting, among other things. But first of all, he can definitely sing. I agree his Elton John song was pretty good. In fact, I thought he would win over Amy. He was a lot better than Amy that night.

I think he's one of the few contestants that has personality this year. Not many stand out. His dancing is funny, I think he'll make into later rounds but I don't think he'll win. There are several other contestants with much more talent.

Hallelujah, Zeffy, you get it! These people who are all into LaToya, who admittedly has the best technical talent, just don't get it. Does anyone here think Beck, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, or Elton John (or literally dozens of others I can think of) would have a chance in this competition if all America voted only for the best technical singer? The vocal gymnastics that we have all been subjected to over the last few years with people like Celine, Whitney, and Christina is so bland and boring because lesser talents like these people on this show are beating it into the ground. Give me a guy who knows how to have fun, is cute in a weird sort of way and doesn't care that he's a little weird, throws all caution to the wind, sounds like no one else, and seems thrilled to be there is just what this show needed.

John Stevens has a nice voice but my problem with him is he sings every category of music in the same style exactly, he doesn't even know how to get excited, if he has a personality he sure isn't showing it, and he's a one trick pony.

I would be more inclined to say that John Stevens has a different sounding voice NOT a better sounding voice than JPL. He so very obviously cannot handle any of the songs that he sings without sounding like a sinatra wannabe. He should take some vocal training and try again next time.

Jon, JPL, whatever you want to call him, can't sing. Honestly, I'm with you with not understanding what people see in him. His voice is weak, always unsupported, and always outstaged by his performances. In his last performance, when he took out the theatrics, all you were left with was a mediocre voice. I'm both surprised and not surprised to hear that he's classically trained. I'd love to hear him sing an aria, actually, because I think at that point he would actually focus on the music, and sing properly. I think he falls into the mistake alot of classically trained people(including myself) have made in thinking that the technique used in 'pop' singing and in classical singing is completely different. There are differences, but you need to keep the core voice within it all the same, and just change the flourishes. I keep waiting, hoping JPL will impress me, but all he's done so far is make me cringe. He's a cutie, I'll give you that. Those dimples are carrying him through this conversation.

Well, until last week I thought he had a halfway decent voice, but he's nowhere near the level of the other competitors voice-wise.Yes, he's got a terrific personality, but that only goes so far with me. Now that he's shown the shortcomings in his voice, and shown how ordinary he sounds, I'm off the bandwagon. I was reserving judgement, but now I have enough evidence to put him low on my list. So to the people who are voting for him, would you buy his album if he were to put one out? He might be fun to watch, but the way for AI to make its money later is through album sales. I don't think he'll do well in that aspect.

I would buy his album if he put one out right now, he would have a bigger choice of songs to do, he wouldn't be dancing while singing in the studio and he wouldn't have judges staring at him, I think it would rock.
