I just don't see his appeal. Why is everyone acting like he's the second coming. I don't think he's that good. Even the super opinionated DJ on my favorite radio station (who I usually respect and totally agree with) thinks he's great and is telling everyone to vote for him.

I agree. I suppose all the dancing got him into the round of 12, but I thought his voice was unique and kind of cool when he sang that Elton John (don't remember what it was) 2 or 3 weeks ago. It'll be interesting to hear him if he concentrates on his singing this week.

while Nailbone may be *my* man (snicker, snicker), JPL is a close second. And really I couldn't care less about hearing JPL sing. I just want to date him. Well, if I was younger.

Seriously, JPL has an interesting voice and he has a great stage presence. I would say that he is more of a performer than a singer. I love to watch him and his performances are usually pretty darn energizing.

(I bet JPL would do a killer "Footloose.")

5. "RE: Jon Peter"
I'm with you, StarryLuna. I mean, he seems like a nice guy, and I think his voice has potential, but I've had a bit of vocal training in my life and he's a vocal coach's nightmare. He clenches his jaw and sings from his throat (instead of from his diaphragm). He has an nice falsetto, but he tends to push it instead of just letting it go. He teeters back and forth between an Elvis impersonation and an Aaron Neville impersonation. I can't figure out what HIS style actually is.

I don't know.

With some training, he could potentially be quite good. I think people really like him on a personal level. And let's face it, most people can barely carry a tune, so it's not like the general public notices half of what I just mentioned above. I get irritated when I watch him, though. But I get irritated when singers on the radio "chew" (think LeAnn Rimes singing "How do I live without CHEW..."). I'm just a stickler, I guess.

By the way, one of my good friends (a guy) thinks JPL is fabulous and wants him to win. *sigh*

He's a breeze of fresh air compared to the rest of the "vocal gymnastic girls" in the competition. He has a sense of humour (although sometimes eccentric), and a nice appeal and charm to him. His voice is different, but good and has potential to grow throughout the competition.

JPL is a cutie. He's different from the others and he has a sincere, quirky, and fun personality. I smile and laugh when I see him perform. I like that. Sure, when I watch La Toya I say "damn that girl can sing," but I don't know if I'd want to sit through an hour of her performing onstage. When I watch JPL, I say "gimme more." I guess my point is that a perfect voice doesn't make someone a good performer/entertainer; There has to be more and I believe that JPL has it. Paula hit the nail on the head when she compared him to Beck and Mick Jagger in the sense that he's not the best dancer in the world, but he puts on a helluva show.

Go JPL GO!

I also think of Bob Seager and Joe Cocker when I see JPL. These guys don't have great voices, but they really can perform a song! I don't think JPL is in their league, yet, but I see potential.

I just don't like the nasal quality of JPL's singing voice.

Well I tend to agree with you. I will say that his Beck-ish demeanor makes him stand out. To me, it's really hard to tell if he has a good voice because he dances so much and gets winded.

Now my WIFE thinks he's great, not because of how he sings, but because she says he's SO CUTE!

I do not see the appeal of JPL at all and his jerking around the stage (i'm sorry, "dancing") is a total turn off. I understand that a lot of people were rooting for him after Simon's "pen salesman" comment and, I do agree, he has handled it quite well, turning it around to his advantage, but I think his whole "geek" shtick is just that -- a shtick. Yes, he seems sweet, etc. but for people to compare him to Beck! Lord have mercy! Beck is a genuis musician, not just a singer -- JPL is neither. I have my fingers crossed the American public will come to their senses soon (which they probably will not) and stop pushing this guy through because he is allegedly "so cute" if for nothing else than that I will not have to keep having to sit through JPL performances every week.

I think that JPL has a lot of charisma, personality and talent. I love his voice, and Paula didn't say that JPL was identical to Beck, she was using it as a comparison. I also like Beck and I agree with her, but hey it's a matter of opinion, some people like concieted women like Fantasia who sing like Donald Duck on crack, it's all a matter of taste.

JPL is very gimmicky.
He knows how to utilize circumstances to up his chances at the title.
Just think about the pen salesman thing, the dancing, and the Simon painting, among other things.
But first of all, he can definitely sing. I agree his Elton John song was pretty good. In fact, I thought he would win over Amy. He was a lot better than Amy that night.

I think you either love JPL or you hate him. I have liked him from the beginning and I think he is going to go far in this competition (unless he picks another stinker song like the Kenny Rogers one).

His voice is nice, but more importantly, HE HAS PERSONALITY. HE MOVES. I swear AI2 and AI3 have made me yearn for Justin Guarini. I get so tired of the over-the-top vocals killing the songs. That's why JPL and George get props from me.

Ehh.. Another reason why I prefer him: He's basically the anti-Idol of the competition along with John Stevens. Jon and John highly contrast with the American ideal of a 'pop star' that it makes you want to root for them and both are underdogs in this specific competition.

Yeah, all of the females (except for Camille) are good and strong singers, but does that mean I like them? Nope... In fact, their singing drives me up the wall.. The type of singing style they present is so overdone and tiring (from a personal perspective). An "eccentric" voice such a JPL's is a breath of fresh air along with his preforming skills and personality. It's also sickening me with how they're all pushing for a female to win. America needs a light-hearted goofy goofball that can sing in his own style; not some shreiking pop-diva wanna-be! ^^;;

Hallelujah, Zeffy, you get it! These people who are all into LaToya, who admittedly has the best technical talent, just don't get it. Does anyone here think Beck, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, or Elton John (or literally dozens of others I can think of) would have a chance in this competition if all America voted only for the best technical singer? The vocal gymnastics that we have all been subjected to over the last few years with people like Celine, Whitney, and Christina is so bland and boring because lesser talents like these people on this show are beating it into the ground. Give me a guy who knows how to have fun, is cute in a weird sort of way and doesn't care that he's a little weird, throws all caution to the wind, sounds like no one else, and seems thrilled to be there is just what this show needed.

Of the two guys that you suggest are outside of the Pop Idol box, though, John Stevens has the MUCH better voice. His performances have been a little dull, and he doesn't seem to have ANY personality when he's interviewed, but of all of these contestants, his is the one I could definitely see myself listening to in my cd player, especially if his style matured and he could have some fun w/ the songs.

JPL-- not so much.

I would be more inclined to say that John Stevens has a different sounding voice NOT a better sounding voice than JPL. He so very obviously cannot handle any of the songs that he sings without sounding like a sinatra wannabe. He should take some vocal training and try again next time.

Jon, JPL, whatever you want to call him, can't sing. Honestly, I'm with you with not understanding what people see in him. His voice is weak, always unsupported, and always outstaged by his performances. In his last performance, when he took out the theatrics, all you were left with was a mediocre voice. I'm both surprised and not surprised to hear that he's classically trained. I'd love to hear him sing an aria, actually, because I think at that point he would actually focus on the music, and sing properly. I think he falls into the mistake alot of classically trained people(including myself) have made in thinking that the technique used in 'pop' singing and in classical singing is completely different. There are differences, but you need to keep the core voice within it all the same, and just change the flourishes. I keep waiting, hoping JPL will impress me, but all he's done so far is make me cringe.

He's a cutie, I'll give you that. Those dimples are carrying him through this conversation.

Well, until last week I thought he had a halfway decent voice, but he's nowhere near the level of the other competitors voice-wise.

Yes, he's got a terrific personality, but that only goes so far with me. Now that he's shown the shortcomings in his voice, and shown how ordinary he sounds, I'm off the bandwagon. I was reserving judgement, but now I have enough evidence to put him low on my list.

32. "Ditto."

I'll just ditto Bebo. His butchering of the Kenny Rogers tune was really close to criminal.

Miscellaneous Ramblings
--as i said elsewhere, if Kenny Rogers were dead, he'd have been spinning in his grave.

That's how I feel about Fantasia aka Donald Duck, she butchered "Always on My Mind".

So to the people who are voting for him, would you buy his album if he were to put one out? He might be fun to watch, but the way for AI to make its money later is through album sales. I don't think he'll do well in that aspect.

Funny, this is what all the Ruben fans were asking me last year when I raved about Clay. Need I say more?

I would buy his album if he put one out right now, he would have a bigger choice of songs to do, he wouldn't be dancing while singing in the studio and he wouldn't have judges staring at him, I think it would rock.

46. "I *HEART* JPL"
i would buy his cd. absolutely. i would also buy any magazine that had him on the cover or that had a story that even mentioned him. i would let my children hang his posters on their walls. i would even be willing to take them to see him in concert. JPL is a HUGE breath of fresh air. HUGE!

JPL is a performer. he gets you energized and interested and then he entertains. and he doesn't have to use sex to do it. (that being said, i do find him to be VERY sexy.)
he seems wholesome enough for young America, cute enough for teenage girl America (and for those of us women hitting our 30s peak...) and i think he reminds most men of a "guy i used to know."

he's got an across the board appeal. he's an easy sale.

I agree with all that you said about JPL, he is totally a breath of fresh air in a stale competition of copycats.
