"Superhead for a Mentor"
LAST EDITED ON 10-20-05 AT 01:22 PM (EST)

Confessions of a video 'ho'

When this show first started I was excited with the possibilities. When Rana was replaced by Iyanla, I questioned the credibility of the show but still thought.."maybe". When I saw Karrine "Superhead" Steffans, listed as a best selling author and new mentor to Christine, I knew this show was entertainment bunk.

I suppose they figured the daytime viewers would be unaware of who Karrine is, but "Superhead", as she is self-titled and WELL known in the hip hop video industry did not write a book to help young girls find their way. She wrote her book as a tell all to let the industry know which rappers she slept with. This "spin" of helping women came about to sell books. If you want to know the REAL Karrine, one only needs to read Vibe magazine as well as other hip hop publications where she brags on how she's brought men to her knees with her "superhead". This isn't ANCIENT news. More like the last year or two. Wow. Are they really that desperate?

I did not know until later just who the woman "really" was that they had Christina talk to. I couldn't believe it!!! I know that this show is a SHOW and that it's all about ratings, but I didn't think that SO would stoop to something like this. How in the world do they think Karrine can be a roll model for Christina? I can't imagine what Karrine's child is gonna experience once the contents of that book is really made known to him/her, and black folks we can be cruel.

This was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Karrine's book. This was so not about Christina and that is wrong.

Here is my little bit of speculation as to why Iyanla had Christina meet with Karrine Steffans:

Sometimes people gain new insights from going back to where they've come from, hence why the meeting was in a strip club. What I heard Karrine primarily sharing with Christina was how ugly it got the further she went down the road of prostitution herself. Karrine focussed on sharing her rock bottom with Christina, which Iyanla followed up on by asking Christina about her own rock bottom. I don't think Iyanla's intent was for Christina to latch onto Karrine as a mentor, but rather for her to see her story as an example of how bad it could've gotten had Christina continued on that path. I think the primary intent in this meeting was to strengthen Christina's resolve in changing her life for the better. (JMO)

Searching for Karrine Steffens was an eye opener in several ways. Going to Karrine.com was a jaw dropper.

Even giving credit to her publishing company for the website, I have to question just how hard she hit 'rock bottom' or when she hit rock bottom. The magazine covers from 2004 are very entertaining as are the album pictures. However, it was the bio that really got me. No real mention of 'rock bottom' in it other than her running out of money and living in her car with her then 3 year old son. I guess more money is made if you have to buy her books or go to her book signings.

I have no problem with the adult entertainment industry. I just have a problem with the hypocrisy of saying that it was your worst moment and that it was 'rock bottom' then continuing to proffit from it. Karrine's website is not about how far she fell and then dragged herself back up. It is about making money from the same trick over and over again. More proffit there I guess.

I agree, a very poor choice of mentor. I would have rather seen IV introduce her to someone who used to strip or prostitute who isn't rich and somewhat famous, but successful in life by paying their bills, sending their kid to school, finding love....

I agree. I don't see Karrine as being brought in to be a mentor. Mentor is a word Christina used, this was her view of Karrine. Karrine is a good example of how it is possible to come out of that lifestyle and start moving down another path. She is in no way capable at this point to help mentor Christina. I believe for lack of a better word, Christina chose mentor. If anything Karrine is merely an inspiration.

Hello to all, I'm new here but I just wanted to put in my two cents.

I also agree that they picked the wrong person to mentor Christina who is absolutely vulnerable. She's like a sponge with all this new material, but Karrine was not the right person for the job.

Does anyone know if Karrine is still "dating" Bill Maher? I was looking on his message board and sure enough, they were/are an item? What is he thinking?

>Mentor is a word Christina

>of Karrine.

Your perfectly right - it was Christina who gave Karrine that status - after a meeting where Christina didn't even really ask questions or where Karrine acted "naturally" (her whole talk about "I am that woman" was so corny and scripted).

I know I bash Christina a lot but this is one of the reasons why! Christina latches onto this woman and starts parroting what the lady says, claiming the words as her own, and never thinks it THROUGH! Christina is ripe to be exploited. Despite what she has gone through she is naive and gullible.

Although IV called Christina about this meeting, I didn't see IV AT the meeting. I think this was a publicity stunt put together to suck in a certain viewer demographic - the young crowd.

Devlynn....I like your way of thinking as that's the only reason I could see for the strip club and the use of this woman...definitely not a "mentor"...she didn't appear to be totally out of the game like she'd like for us to believe. Christina needs to face what made her realize that she needed to get out (her rock-bottom).... she glossed over having sex with several men...one after another and she claimed to have found it repugnant...that's reason enough for me, however, the way she quickly passed over it made me feel as if she's still not seeing that as her "bottom"...she needs to realize that not only is her son important in her decision, but that she's deserves better too.

9. "RE: Superhead for a Mentor"
My point was that even if Karrine had a "rock bottom" that she actually hit and her goal was to provide an inspiration, her story would be,

"Hit rock bottom then sensationalize and sell all the sex you've had to get back at them for "using" you, all the while bragging how well you used them physically and emotionally, and call it turning a new leaf."

Seeing her story from the beginning, it's easier to see that this is more a schtik (sp) to sell books and not really an inspirational change.
