He was once again blaming the editing. Now Dr. Phil is going to figure out "the truth". I didn't catch the air date, but I'd imagine it's soon. It should be entertaining.   Top

On one hand, these two so need a Dr. Phil (not that I'm crazy about him). On the other hand, they are top-notch DAWs. For me, the latter will win out, and I'll ignore them.   Top

I have read a few of his books, and found them to be very enlightening, and I got a lot of practical advice that helps me in my day to day life. Granted, I do not see his show very often as I am at work during the day, but it does seem to be consistent with his writings from what I have seen. Just curious is all. You are of course free to continue your loathing.   Top

"RE: John & Victoria to be on Dr. Phil" LAST EDITED ON 01-21-05 AT 05:45 PM (EST) I don't know about other people, but the nurses at my house watch it all the time so I have seen quite a few. The main problems I have with Dr. Phil's show: 1) He often is too soft in his advice. Too often the advice does not seem strong enough to make the results stick. Hopeful, stronger advice is given backstage when it is really needed and we just don't see it. Mainly I think this is because the large audiance: If Dr. Phil told a guest on the air that it was ok to spank thier child hard sometimes, there will be for sure some idiot out there who would use that as an excuse to strap thier child to the point of injury. The nature of the show limits how good his advice can be. 2) Too many of his guests seem to be picked for ratings first. The weirder problems just do not represent the problems of the general population, so such shows are really entertainment only not advice shows. 3) Many of his solutions for helping people who come on his show are very expensive. While is it is nice that he does this for the people on the show itself, others looking at the show can't do the same. Example: how many parents can afford to send thier teenage daugther to the Carribean just to get her career started?   Top

"RE: John & Victoria to be on Dr. Phil" Although I often agree with some of the more general things Dr. Phil has to say with regard to personal responsibility and "letting things go" and "creating your own way" etc., I think the format of a psychology talk show does more of a disservice to the publc than it helps. I fear that people who watch his show may be inclined to forego counseling they really need, thinking they can apply the good Dr.'s analysis of some DAW's situation to their own. And I also think said format cheapens psychology as a profession.   Top

Dr. Phil does not participate in a true therapeutic relationship. Dr. Phil gives advice. He demeans. He makes fun of. He has to be right. He tells people what to do, rather than let them come to decisions on their own. He is incredibly judgemental, a HUGE no-no in therapy. His "clients" (I would call them victims) are not allowed to challenge his solutions. A psychologist with standards knows that solutions to personal problems take time and that the therapist needs to actually appreciate the baseline integrity of an individual. Dr. Phil is a DAW and has sacrificed every aspect of a true therapeutic healer in his quest for fame and fortune. Everyone is entitled to my opinion.   Top

Jonathan will bat his eyelashes, admit how terrible he was/is, insist the show has made him a new, caring, sensitive individual. Victoria will see the 1st tape, cry, Jonathan will hug her and comfort her (proving he's really such a nice guy who was only caught up in the moment of TAR). She will then relate the list Jonathan made her memorize of nice things he allegedly has done for her since TAR and how he's changed and is the sweetest, most lovable guy in the world. And that she's lucky to be with him. Dr Phil will joke around with them about the episodes - cause he's probably a fan in a weird roundabout way. Everybody shakes hands, J hugs V and swears he's never going to use a harsh word again. It's all part of their damage control program and a desperate attempt to extend their 15 min. *ETA spelling   Top

I can't wait to see it. It should at the very least be good for a laugh or two. When Dr. Phil first came on the Oprah scene during her trial in Texas I thought he was a pretty sensible, no nonsence kinda guy and I agreed with his take on things for the most part. I bought his first book and found some interesting stuff in it and passed it on to a couple people to read who I thought could benefit from it. I didn't get to see him all that often and when I did I enjoyed watching him. Once he got his own show he became way too full of himself. My parents still love him but I've jumped off that bandwagon for good. While I still think that his basic ideas are practical, the way he has become so friggin DAWish disgusts me.   Top

I shouldn't have done it, but I didn't know how it was going to look."), but also pretends that he came up with the phrase that happens to be the name of this site. He says, "I'm not happy with what I see up there. I'm a better person than that. That doesn't represent me or our relationship. I call it reality blurred --------------------------- So for those keeping count: 1. It was a disease 2. It was drugs for a disease 3. CBS encouraged him 4. He was playing a character 5. Jimmy Van Patten 6. It was editing 7. Victoria 8. I did it as a display of emotions Well we are finally getting an admission of responsibility. So in just a few days we will see these two on Dr. Phil. Who is as useless as Jonathan but it should be amusing.   Top

I thought Dr. Phil would make him squirm more, but the little he did was fun. I can't believe he still says it's all "out of context". All he had to do was say "hey, I was an idiot. I've apologized to Victoria a hundred times", and American would probably have forgotten about them a long time ago. But the way he just keeps denying it, and making excuses, it's so.... prickish.
