"did anyone get tickets for the tour?"
Hey peeps - I know it's been quiet on this board since the show ended (naturally), but I'm wondering if anyone here was able to get tickets to the show. I think I might luck out and win an eBay auction at the last minute, since prices seem to have come down. They are coming to Oakland this Friday night, and I really, really want to go!!! So wish me luck and if you are by chance going to the Oakland show too, maybe with a little luck, I'll see you there.

I'll be the one going all fan-girly over Donyelle and Benjelle - lol!

Silver - I'm talking about the ones for the Oakland show on the 15th. There are several auctions going that end in a couple of days, and so far, the bids are lower than average. I hope that remains true by the auction's end.

Yeah, the tickets for the Cleveland show (9/29) are still priced outrageously. Maybe once it gets closer to the date, they will drop. *crosses fingers*

Good luck with the Tix, Topaz and definitely post your comments after the show.

I was lucky enough to get tix for Oct 6th in Philly (just 3-1/2 more weeks). From what I hear & the trouble I had in getting my 3 tix, shows sold out very quickly.

I was simultaneously on hold for 1 hr & 15 mins, calling at 10 a.m. sharp when the ticket office opened, plus trying to access the Website for my area for tickets, but the site was down due to "busy server" the entire time. It really gets on my nerves that people/companies can buy blocks of tickets & then re-sell them at a higher price, while real fans can't get tickets, even though they try to the minute they go on sale. A big pet peeve of mine. (Okay, I'm off my rant now )

I'll check back here over the weekend, Topaz, to hopefully hear the good news and your review of the show.

Well kids, it doesn't look good. The next auction ends in 22 hours, and it's already up to $177 bucks - over my limit. The timing isn't good for me as all my extra money is being sucked out of me by "first of the school year" expenses: new clothes for the boy-o, school pics, PTA dues, classroom supplies fees, and Scholastic book order. Oh, forgot about the gift wrap fundraiser too.

I've actually got tix for this Saturday - 9/23 - in Milwaukee.

A friend called as soon as they went on sale. He didn't try the web, so I don't know if it was down or not.

I'll come back & let y'all know how it was!

15. "Report on Oakland Show, 9/15"
Since no one is writing a review here, decided to register and submit my 1st Post:
The show was terrific in every way and exceeded my expectations. Beforehand, I was afraid it would be short (like 1 ½ hours without an intermission). Then, during the show, because the dancers were putting so much effort into it, I started anticipating each number was going to be the last. But then there was an intermission (not overly long), and the entire show lasted 2½ hours with a great encore.

I was also anticipating that without there being a competition that it would be dull and without fire and excitement; instead there were all-out performances by everyone, simply electrifying. The audience was also on fire, and there were many standing ovations, not to mention screaming, yelling, and whistling. The music was very loud. My date temporarily lost hearing (bring ear plugs if loudness bothers you).

All the favorite routines were danced, each of the 10 had a (short) solo routine, and there were many group routines. Because there was no 'bad camera work' the live event was ever so much better. The lighting and costumes were superb!

There was a giant TV screen for a taped welcome from Nigel, replays of tryouts at the beginning (people were still being seated), highlights of each dancer’s ‘journey’ before their solo, etc. This added a lot to the entertainment value.

The dancers took turns MCing (most proving that they are better dancers than MCs).

Awesome - It will always be a favorite memory! Try to get tickets, by all means -- you will not be disappointed!

16. "SORRY! Sorry, sorry. Here it is!"
Sing with me: **Tah Ta-tah Ta-tah – So you think you can dance!**

So sorry I didn’t get anything posted Monday. This is the problem when you don’t have the net at home. (I am NOT a Luddite!) Oh, and I actually have to WORK at work. (dagnabit)

Anyway – I LOVED the concert! Had a great time being a big silly fan! Yelled & screamed with all the 12 year olds! I even bought a really dumb hat! (Yes, I’m a grown woman. Shut up.)

I don’t have photos – sorry. I have an aversion to haunting stage doors, and there’s no way I’d take a camera into the theater. (The ushers were very busy stopping people from taking pictures all night anyway.) I did buy a program, thinking I would scan & post photos from that – but none of the program photos are really new – same promo stuff we’ve seen around. None of the new hair. Sorry.

The theater was absolutely full, and despite a typically vocal tween contingent, the age was much more mixed than I expected. There was a bit of sign waving. The set was very simple – 3 flat, white non-video screens across the back of the stage, plus a video screen above them. Effective lighting – not overly produced. There were numerous video clips, plus various effects projected on the video screen during the show. Nothing as tacky as the famous AI flames, but general smokey, swirly color stuff. Before the show, the video screen showed what looked like a revolving set from the TV show. Also, some trivia questions. Dmitry drinks 3 protein shakes per day. Brian Friedman danced with Mario Lopez on Kids Incorporated. None of the dancers sleep naked (riiiiiiight).

The lights go down! Video intro by Nigel, with “Top 5” moments from the audition phase – Sex; the “Gender Comedian;” the Asian girl that just wandered in with “dees kina move & dees kina move;” the kosher hip hop face-plant (which they showed over and over with sound effects. Ew.); and a montage of SickStep. Good to see Hok & the boys again. Miss them. Not so much the others.
Brief video welcome by Cat (the rest of the show we heard her occasionally but did not see her) – and here they come!

The opening was much like we saw on the shows – just intros with brief solos. Hey, I’m not complaining, it’s REALLY fun to see them right there! Most of them look the same, a few hair changes: Benji’s is shaped a little edgier, and his bangs are now blonde. Eh. Ivan is still ultra short, but he now has designs shaved in his head. Eh. Miss Donyelle is much darker, smoother, and she has bangs – she looks great! Hmmm, it’s possible that Dmitry has put on a pound or 2. FEAR NOT! He’s still gorgeous. Very nice tushie. And, of course, he took his shirt off at every possible opportunity. Not that I’m complaining.

From here on out I’m not going to even try to get the order right, and I may miss something…because the “program” doesn’t actually list the “program.” Infidels.

If we can tell anything from the screams, I’d say that Milwaukee/Southeastern Wisconsin voted for Travis. The most screams were for Travis, Ivan, Benji, Donyelle, Allison, Heidi….in approximately that order. I did not have a decibel meter with me, so this is a guess. Donyelle had one particularly ardent admirer that kinda threw her off her game by screaming out his love for her when she was trying to introduce a number. It was very cute. I also couldn’t help wondering how the girls screaming for Travis will feel when they realize he’s gay.

The dancers act as emcees throughout the night – to varying degrees of success. Benji & Travis are great with the mic. Heidi comes off a bit like a spokesmodel. Donyelle is adorably awkward trying to crack a joke (and failing horribly). Each of them introduced at least one thing, but they had Trav, Benj & Heidi doing a bit more talking than the others.

Interspersed through the night, each dancer’s goodbye video was shown, followed by a solo dance. These were clearly more choreographed than they had been on the show, but still pretty much the same. Dmitry wore his flappy black pants & worked with a red cape. Heidi twizzeled her legs. Benji started with a very Astaire-ish routine with a mop, and then went into the usual. Donyelle, Travis, Alison & Ryan did great contemporary stuff. Natalie did pretty much the same exact thing she did every time on the show (the barrel-knee-roll things, and coming up on the front of her toes. Martha, sadly, was pretty dull. The best solo – & most ‘new’ – was Ivan’s. He did a really wonderful, smooth R&B hip hop solo. I love that boy. Seriously. If I were only 23 years younger. (ok, sorry. that’s gross.)

Most of the routines we saw were in the finale show.

Each of the top 4 did their favorite routine:
Travis – the paso doble w/Heidi
Benji – the really wild, fast Latin-whatever-that-was w/Heidi (mambo?)
Donyelle – the Hairspray number w/Benji
Heidi – the Mia Michaels contemporary routine w/Travis (YAY!)
(see a little too much Heidi here? yeah. It eased up a little bit in the 2nd half, but yeah.)

They did the “judges favorites,” also from the finale:
Brian’s favorite: “Steam Heat” – B’way, Martha & Travis
Mia’s favorite: “Why” – contemporary, Ivan & Alison (YAY!)
Dan’s favorite: Tranji dance hip hop! (YAY!)
Mary’s favorite: the Natalie/Dmitry Latin ballroom number – and we find out that Dmitry choreographed it!

Other pairs:
Ivan & Alison’s Argentine tango (YAY!)
Ivan & Alison do their R&B hip hop routine with umbrellas (YAY!)
Ryan & Heidi’s Cuban rumba (YAY!)
Travis and Natalie do a brand new contemporary routine that Travis choreographed
Travis & Donyelle do “Georgia On My Mind”
Benji & Donyelle do the “Vietnamese” Waltz
Benji & Heidi do a Western Swing number – along the lines of his “dance for your life” routine in Vegas

Group numbers:
SexyBack – right before intermission
Ramalama (Bang Bang) – right after intermission. Still amazing. Must order that CD. Wade Robson is a god.
Disco medley – high-larious. LOVED the guys’ suits.
Hip Hop medley that segued into the Tranji routine
Broadway Medley positioned as a tribute to Bob Fosse -- started w/Steam Heat, included Cell Block Tango, Bye Bye Blackbird…and me yawning.

The “finale” was a little weak. The last full number was Donyelle & Benji’s “You Can’t Stop The Beat” from Hairspray. Immediately after, all of the other dancers came out for their bows, and left – ‘cause it’s “the end.” Except that they had all clearly changed into Hairspray-esque costumes – so we KNEW they had an encore planned. Still, they made us clap & scream for it, then came out & acted like “oh well, we’ll do one more for you.” Then, the full-cast routine was really short & not that great. I just wish that they had done a REAL finale…a full-out group ending to “You Can’t Stop…” and THEN make us beg for an encore. I don’t have a problem with the encore being short…but an encore is not a finale.

Some of the video clips shown:
the “day in the life of a SYTYCD contestant” package that we saw a while back
a hip hop montage that may be new
a tribute to the bottom 10 of the top 20 that I think we saw on the finale
the international SYTYCD package that we’ve seen already
the aforementioned goodbye clips for each of the 10
I’m sure I’m forgetting something. Toward the end it started to feel a little clip-heavy.

General Impressions/Comments:
What a fun, fun, fun night. About 2 ½ hours of entertainment. Yes, it would have been nice to see more new stuff, but they only had a couple of weeks to throw this show together, so I MORE than forgive them. Besides, the flip-side of that coin is that we got to see all of our favorite routines.

I could tell that several of the numbers had been goosed – a little more complex choreography. Without watching tapes side-by-side, I can’t get more specific, but…well, there you are.

With more time and more rehearsal, EVERYTHING was tighter. There was no obvious cross-genre weakness – Dmitry’s hip hop looked great. As did Ivan’s disco, etc. There were no weak links.

Ryan is absolutely breathtaking. Outside of a contest that’s as much personality as it is talent, I was blown away by him. Plus, when he’s on stage rather than TV – without a camera in his face – you can see every bit as much fire in him as in any of the others. And more than some.

I can’t tell you how much I adore Ivan. We all saw him grow so far, so fast during the competition…he’s only gone further. Every number he did was fantastic. This kid is definitely my favorite.

Donyelle’s toe appears to be fine – she was up on her toes quite a bit throughout. Natalie had an elastic bandage on her knee, and Alison had one on her ankle/foot, but there was no noticeable limping or bobbling – so I doubt either of them have actual injuries.

First half I really felt I had seen quite enough of Heidi. Fortunately, in the 2nd half, there was a healthy dollop of Ivan & Alison.

Something I was starting to feel toward the end of the summer was really confirmed by the Broadway segment of the concert. They really need a new B’way choreographer. Really. Pretty please. Tyce DiOrio’s choreography is dull dull dull. Though Fosse is certainly deserving of a little worship, Tyce’s weak attempts at a “Fosse Tribute” are just…dull. For perspective – I’m a musical theater geek. I’ve been in 100+ shows over almost 30 years. I’ve done everything from bad community theater, through cheesy dinner theater, and up to really high-level, multi-million dollar, regional stuff with B’way vets. So I’m not generally bored by musical theater – I LOVE musical theater. I just don’t love Tyce. I did a kick-ass “Pajama Game,” and the choreographer licensed the actual Fosse choreography for “Steam Heat.” Let me tell you, it looks nothing like what Martha & Travis did. (Her own work for the rest of the show held up VERY well next to Fosse’s, btw. That’s why she makes the big bucks.) So pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease – find someone else for next summer!!

All in all, I loved it. I’m so glad we were able to get tickets, and if they tour again next year, I’ll be there again.

Thank you for your wonderful recap of the show! Every review that has been posted gives the performers basically rave reviews.

Want to hear something crazy? I am flying out to Norfolk VA on the week-end the tour will be there. I don't have show tickets yet, but I'm hoping to get two and take my sister with me. Should be a blast, based on what I've heard from those who've seen the show!

To me, there seems to be more light-hearted, joyful love of performing in this group and on this show than the sister show AI. The whole tone of the competition -- especially the final episode -- was missing the sense of dread and tension that you feel sometimes watching AI.

I don't know if it's the judges -- much more constructive & specific on SYTYCD. They tell it like it is, but are still warm people.

Or the "prize" -- a shot at a dance career rather than a sink-or-swim recording deal.

I don't know. But I will say that - though I do love watching AI - I was MUCH more engaged by these kids than I ever have been by a group of AI kids.

It was really a joy to see them.

(Lawdy I'm a sap -- I'd better get some coffee & snap out of this)

Got two tickets! Going to the show! I'll try to post my impressions here on the Monday following the show, if I'm not too swamped at work.

I agree with your impressions of this season's SYTYCD, versus AI - not cutthroat among the dancers. They all seemed very sincerely supportive of each other. I haven't heard of any drama between any of them, and that's pretty amazing considering they are cooped up together on a tour bus for weeks on end.

We have tried to find it, and apparently it is out of print.

Thanks! The last time I'd checked, the only one available was the $62 one. That was also about how much it would have cost at Tower Records.

I've enjoyed the 2 great reports above to tide me over and now I will finally get to see the show tonight. I cannot wait to get my Benji fix, see Travis in all his greatness, see Dimitri's hip action and shirt-ripping technique . . . I may even be possessed by Mary Murphy tonight & lose my voice . . . Hurry and tell all!

I won an eBay auction for tickets to the 10/21 show in Norfolk, VA. Yes, that's right. I'm flying across the country to see this show! But one of my sisters lives in Norfolk, and it will be good to see her again.

35. "PIX"
Since the show is summed up so well above, I will only add that I loved the whole thing, start to finish. Of course, all the dancers have only gotten better and are so much more impressive live.

Benji was the best emcee and had the most "lines." There is nothing this guy can't do. Benji did a great Zoolander impression and a pretty good Nigel impression. He's just da bomb.

I was surprised how great Natalie is. She was near my top dancers, but she really blew me away and I didn't realize what a strong partner she was.

The solos were longer, which was nice to see and all the familiar routines were tweaked, adding some new elements. I loved it all.

Benji started his solo with a mop and did a little Fred Astaire like thing before tossing the mop & jacket and going crazy in the way that he does.

Jaymz & Jessia are "understudies" for the show -- basically they filled in the 1 or 2 spots in the group numbers while the main dancer(s) were getting changed for the next routine.

The only disappointment I had was that I was hoping Musa would have made an appearance during the "hip hop" segment, since Musa is from the Philly area. He was not. When his name was mentioned he got great applause & I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking they'd have him pop onstage at his "home town" show.

I spent $30 on a SYTYD T-shirt and $15 on a program. The program is pretty weak -- like a super cheap yearbook. They each handwrote a little something inside the front & back covers and it's just a picture of each and 3 questions answered. Nothing special. Oh well.

I'm having a real hard time getting the pix to upload, because of being too large, so I can only shrink some only so much. Some photos shrunk & cropped better than others in the resolution department

Your Top 10 (had to cut this pic in 1/2 -- couldn't shrink enough)

Whoops, guess I should have put my post under yours. The show was awesome though wasn't it. I was praying that we might see Musa or someone that wasn't on the tour also. I tried to tell Syren that I saw Jamyz in a few of the group numbers but she wasn't having it. I didn't see or couldn't make out Jessica at all if she was ever out there at our show.

Thanks for the pix Cattychat.

I meant to respond much sooner... I saw the show in Milwaukee, Sept 23. I echo the comments, this group is absolutely fabulous.

Heidi dances to the "back of the theatre"... she's such an incredible dancer (without it looking over the top).

To see Travis live... well, that's an experience. Absolutely worth the price of admission... where does he get that energy... an incredible soul that one! He choreographed a couple of brilliant numbers. Natalie was astounding in his number. The energy Travis and Heidi have together during the matador routine... well, that's an amazing dance partnership.

The west coast swing number with Benji and Heidi was breathtaking. That jumped out as a whole new level of dance... they seemed to be dancing to the imagination. Wow.

It's great to see Ivan live. He just moves so well, and so uniquely.

The Benji and Travis number is lightening in a bottle.

Basically it was 2 1/2 hours of these young, energetic, happy souls dancing their hearts out... it doesn't get any better than that... unless of course I could be one of them.
