The vidcaps for episode 9: Transcript: Jeff Probst: Next time on Survivor... Probst : Grant!...and Rob are through! Hello! Probst: Rob cements control of his tribe. Rob: One, two... Ometepe Tribe : Ometepe. Probst: Or does he? Grant : I'm my own man. I make my own decisions. Probst: And Phillip gets a makeover. Jeff Probst : Phillip, did you have a collision with a hawk Phillip: I asked for a sign and out of thin air appeared this feather. So, the challenge looks like it will be run in heats. Grant and Rob are through, 1 and 2...Grant needs to start winning these, and he should on this one, imo. The Ometepe's are united, but then we get a little doubt, misdirection. Grant was probably very upset to see himself get 5 votes. This is a serious wakeup call for him, so game on. In the end, I believe it will be just that....a reaction from the night before confessional. He's his own man when it comes to winning the challenges, but still very much a part of the Ometepe faction. Also, I don't think Grant was wild about voting Matt out again... Phillip seems like he adjusted well to the merge, his in and back to his animal antics...   Top

"RE: Episode 9, Vidcaps Thread" From the EW interview with Jeff: Next week is one of my favorite dilemmas: Immunity or food? I’m always fascinated by the people who choose to pass up the opportunity for immunity simply so they can have a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger. But we’ve never done this challenge without somebody taking the food. Take a guess who is eating next week? I don't see how that challenge we're seeing is the type where you can take food instead of competing? That usually shows up in an endurance challenge. Could the vidcaps we have be a RC? There won't be a duel...   Top

I remember the one in Tocantins where Tyson won it, and was pissed that everyone in his tribe opted to eat...I recall it was a kind of horseshoes challenge....where they had to hit the ball or horseshoe in the target circle, perhaps? Take a guess who is eating next week? I'll bet that Phillip is eating, but I'd bet that the spa girls and Rob/Grant are both competing....we see Grant and Rob. My money will be on Grant or Mike to win this one.   Top

"RE: Episode 9, Vidcaps Thread" Is it really going to be a Immunity or Food challenge? Agree that it is difficult to see how staged challenges can have this worked into it. So you might be right that it might be a RC. Always good to show inner alliances with Rewards that require you to pick 1 or 2 to join you. Winner and his allies will be damned by the rest if he/she pick his/her allies, damned by his/her allies of he/she don't. More so for the dominant tribe, allows for a shake up that can avert the dull pagangoing of one side. Wish they will do something like the in some of the previous seasons where those who sat out for the challenge could eat as long as the immunity challenge was on and had to stop eating the moment the challenge end. So a challenge for immunity and a concurrent bulimia challenge.   Top

My guess is that none of them chooses to eat at the challenge. IMO, all Zaps are playing for immunity. Interesting sign of Grant talking to the Zaps. Yes, they all voted for him, but right now he sits on the plus side of the 6-5 numbers advantage. Even without immunity, he should be safe. Even if the Zaps all vote Grant again, he should be safe. The Omes should vote out a Zap this week in order to keep the numbers advantage. At some point, you would think they want to get Rob out, but this is not the time. I would suspect the Omes would want to send a strong Zap to RI to hopefully take out Matt. My initial thoughts lean toward Rooster, Mike or David as possible targets. Jeff teased that it would be immunity or food this week, and guess who would be sitting out, as Corvis noted. But I count them all here and accounted for in this pic, and Jiffy has his arm up to start them. I'm thinking since there is no RI duel this week, perhaps we are going to see individual reward and an individual immunity. And, lest we forget, there HAS to be a double boot here!!! That would also explain the Grant and the Zap picture eating rice together...if Rob wins reward and chooses to take the spa girls and Phillip with him. He'll leave his most trusted ally back at with the Zaps. The one they all just voted for... ETA: The challenge that we see in the preview promo is the REWARD CHALLENGE!   Top

Note that Natalie is wearing the IN in the pre-challenge line-up. You can also see the Immunity Necklace stand right behind Probst in the O/H shot. crocophile at MeSS suggests two separate ICs. That would be consistant with the evidence we have so far, and Probst's statement that there would be an immunity vs. food dilemma. FWIW, Andrea, Ashley and probably Natalie are inside the shelter as Grant moves over to eat rice with the Zapateras, so they are not away at the time. The person whose face we don't see (presumably Natalie) is holding a small rod. Not really clear what it is, but it could be the treemail accessory for the challenge.   Top

I can see the challenge course a lot better now, Jeff puts himself in the line of fire. Two ICs in the upcoming episode would make sense. With a jury of 7 they can't eliminate all the pre-jurors by the start of episode 10 and start the "bring in the jury" (or rather "occupant of RI who may or may not end up on the jury") at the ep 10 TC. Two ICs suggests two TCs. They could have a duel in-between or a triple duel to start ep 10. The duel in-between makes more sense but they might not have wanted to fit 2 ICs and 2 Tribals and a duel into one episode.   Top

So, Croc is right then. This IC has everyone participating. Nat has the IN, and you can clearly see the IN stand next to Jeff, as you point out. There will be another IC that involves immunity OR food. We know that some will opt for the food, rather than going for the Immunity. Regarding the challenge that we have the vidcaps for...they start out with all 11. Have to dig the mallet up to break the tile. First six to break their tiles will advance to the next section. Looks like the 6 will be wittled down to 3. Then the three compete for one winner. Can anyone tell what those stands are at the end of the challenge? Thanks so much, VG! So we know who we can rule out for winning IC and Rob is definitely in contention. Photo caption said 1st IC is called Meso Soup. Note purple cup in foreground -- so do they have to throw ping pong balls or something into cup? Doesn't seem to be a puzzle. Happy Rob...after winning IC??? Julie's hair, etc. are wet here. Could this be after losing 2nd IC/endurance? Clearly back in camp but could be immediately following. (Then again, could be after swimming or something unrelated.)   Top

First IC, day one, most likely involves a reward and an idol clue. First TC will be day 2. Ome's are hogging all the chairs in camp. Zaps look worried. Second IC and TC will be Day 3. All we know is that Andrea, Grant, Phillip, Rob were safe in TC#1, and presumably Ashley and Natalie. So we pretty much know that a Zap went home on Day Two as we all expected.   Top

I was beginning to think that CBS had done away with the press images...So, on day 3 we have NO pictures of a Zap anywhere, but 2 of Phillip, 2 of Andrea, 1 of Grant, 1 of Rob. On day 2, the Zaps do NOT look happy at all. I was thinking, if anyone beat Rob at puzzles that it would be David. But, I may be holding firm now with the Boston Rob win, as David does not look like he's in the clear for the evening. So, one of Julie, Rooster, Mike, Rob, Grant, or David wins the IC. If David looks miserable, can we rule him out? We can rule Rooster out from the TC shot as well. WE can't see Julie, but she looks miserable as well. So, we are down to Mike, Rob, Grant. Interesting if Grant, Rob, and David would go on a reward of some kind. Very interesting. This game is individual immunity, so I don't see how the "team" could hold you back if you won your portion? What are the bowls doing there? Do they have to eat something? Jeff had noted earlier that there were no gross food challenges this year...? I have noted in the past that they do take press photos of the bootee...but this week, they can't take any of the Zaps on Day 3, because it would give it away. Phillip still qualifies for this...?   Top

"First Challenge - Meso Soup" LAST EDITED ON 04-13-11 AT 08:36 AM (EST) Okay, trying to figure out this challenge... Here is the overall aerial view... We see they are lined up, with the squares marked off for digging up the baton to break the tile. Winners who advance are: Julie, Mike, Rooster and David, Grant, Rob. Next heat: From the over head shot, in combination with the shot above, we can see that there are 3 tanks of WATER...you can see right through the water tank. Then in the next picture...(ETA: Actually, there are not three tanks placed together....you can see that there is a wood divider on the top of the tank, that divides 1 tank into 3 entries, but note that the divider is only on the top, so they must dip their heads into one large communal tank....) You can see David, Grant, and Robs Water tank (each player has their own water tank, btw, we can see that they are divided into 3 tanks together), in the foreground you can see the bowl to catch the water. So, on Jiffy's go, they have to run to their own water tank, dunk their head in and grab a mouth full of water, then run to the bowl that is placed so many feet beyond, spit their water into the bowl, first three to get so much water up to the full line wins, and moves beyond to the next portion. Everyone in each stage has to complete that stage even after they are numerically eliminated from the challenge. The losers have a finish order. Winners are given a choice, compete in next stage or bow out for food, losers move up to back in the challenge. After all decisions are made bow-outs and remaining losers get food while the competition continues into the next stage. Repeat for each stage. Possibly at one stage the choice is made more difficult with no more food option past this point. Each stage has to have so many in competition, so not everyone gets to make a decision, last loser in line at each stage is pretty much stuck as a loser or having to continue in competition. Yeah, it's a bit complicated, but they could make it work. It would require a lot of time and some serious editing to play well on TV.   Top

If Ometepe is up 5 to 4 over Zapatera (plenty of targets no matter who wins) why would any of them opt to hang if they can have food for sitting out? 1. Pride of participation, don't throw a challenge. 2. Idol paranoia. 3. Shakey position in own tribe. Ashley, Grant, Natalie and Phillip might fit 1, which isn't much of a reason to pass up food. Rob would fit 1 and 2, with great leadership comes great paranoia. Andrea might fit 1 and 3. (Phillip should fit 3 as well but his thinking is erratic.) If Jeff pulls the old make a pick quick without giving leader Rob a chance to speak, Rob won't have influence. After all, if they were to find it, then it would create paranoia regarding who to send their vote to. But, alas, they have proved me wrong at Mess Hall. Someone noted over there, that there is a buried baton that they use to break the tile with in the first leg of the challenge. I mistook the baton that Mike dug up, as the flag pole at the beach, that we see he and David digging under. So, this is a wrong assumption. There is no draw string pouch with the HII in it. Because showing the second one would give too much away, because we'd be able to see at least some of the folks who aren't voted out in the first one. I also think it could be to hide who doesn't compete. This is where I think the Immunity vs. Food question comes in. After the first IC, Jeff tells them all that there will be a second IC because there will be two tribal councils. However, they have a choice whether they are competing in the second tribal council, and if they choose not to, they get to eat. I think the first TC will be a fairly routine targeting of a Zap. The second one could give Rob an interesting opportunity to gamble. With a 6-4 advantage, is it finally time to get rid of wild card Philip? It would explain why Philip and his feather are featured so prominently in the pics (it's not much more bizarre than his other stuff, why feature it?), and explain Rob's gamble. His idol paranoia fits, since Philip was obviously not pleased not to be clued in on the clue right away.   Top

A) Both challenge winners could be immune for both votes. But I don't think they would grant anyone, much less two people, a second immunity for winning only a single challenge. B) The winner of the first challenge could be immune for the first vote only, and the winner of the second challenge immune for the second vote only. But then the second immunity holder could get voted out in the first vote. And if that happened no one would have immunity for the second vote. So that scenario makes no sense whatsoever. What would make the most sense to me is that there is only one challenge and one immunity winner. Then, at TC, there is a single voting round where everyone has to vote for two people. The two with the most votes are out, with the usual hii rules in effect. *note -- there is a sort-of precedent for doing it this way: in Pearl Islands the Outcasts each had to cast two votes at the TC that sent two of them back to the game. My only problem with the above scenario is that they are using the term "Double Trouble Council", which does seem to suggest two separate rounds of voting. But I can't think of another way they could do it. ETA: Well the cap Dabo posted below seems to show that there WILL be two separate tribal councils taking place, which means two separate votes. So I still have no idea how they'll work the challenge(s).   Top

Clearly, the promo and the misdirection state there will be 2 tribal councils. So, I do not believe that they will try to have a combined TC where they have to vote for 2 people at the same vote. I really think it means there will be one TC that ends in a vote and one going to RI. Then immediately, they will start with the second one, right where the first one left. I think there will be new discussion, a new vote, a new chance to play an HII, and a new boot. I think that there will be 2 IC's because, Jiffy teased that there will be a challenge with Immunity vs. food offered. And, with the challenge that I see, I don't see where the food is, AND, I see everyone participating. Jeff said that someone will choose the food. You may be right, though, there could be food involved in the challenge shots that we see at some phase. I don't know. I think Rob wins immunity and I think it will most likely be good for the entire night...Jiffy would tease, immunity back up for grabs and it will keep you safe at not one, but TWO tribal councils...blah, blah... Another thought that supports 2 IC's is that without a duel, they will have the time to show 2 challenges. If there are 2 IN's then I think both players would be immune all night, through both TC's.   Top

You're right, it could very well be Phillip, but I'm not quite ready to jump on that bandwagon yet. Have we ever seen Phillip with a dark-coloured bag that he'd wear with the strap over his shoulder and under his arm like women are known to do? And his collared shirt tends to be more open in the neck area and hangs over his shoulders a bit. In the pic, the light-coloured thing is completely covering the neck and has the consistency of a buff being poofed out. The shorts - could be Phillip's orange ones, could be Grant's orange ones, could be Rob's red ones. With the lighting and the vagueness of the picture, it could be any colour in the red-orange family. I'm more likely to believe that it's Rob than it is Phillip in that picture. In fact, if I had to go completely out of left field - it looks like Rob's body/clothes with Russell's head superimposed on it, particularly in the highlighted picture I posted.   Top

"RE: Episode 9, Vidcaps Thread" Not wanting to reply way up the thread, but in response to the talk of IC's and TC's: It is in the official Rules given to the players that there cannot be more than one immunity challenge per TC cycle. So if there are two IC's, it has to be IC, then TC vote, second IC, then TC vote. Note this is exactly what they did in S19 and S20, and most likely would have done in S21 without the two quitters. "Surprise" -- the players expect days of rest between the high stress events. It is always a surprise when they have two 1-day cycles, or a 1-day coupled with a 2-day. I would not read more into it than that. They could have a duel after the first TC, but it would probably overcrowd the episode and they will have a triple duel at the beginning of Ep 10. Because it will be two short cycles, Matt won't be there alone very long. The big action IC most likely involves a reward for either the finalists or for the winner and companion of his or her choice. The reward winners would get a clue to the HII, whether or not one goes back in play. It would be weird though, because it would relate to the old hiding place at Ometepe camp. Oh well, rocks trees beach logs -- there are some in every camp. The second TC would be something that people could watch who were eating. With that type of dynamic, it has always been a challenge where the players can see the feasters. The first challenge wouldn't work. IIRC, the Tocantins challenge Tyson won was a form of table shuffleboard, where the burden was on him to knock out Sierra.   Top

Rob/Phillip and Mike/David are seen around the camp flag digging deeply looking for the HII. Clearly, there must be one. I do believe that someone in the Zap camp will find it, so Rob has to gamble and have paranoia.   Top

Winner wins immunity and top finishers win reward, HII clue goes to reward winners, which may include a Zapatera. 2) F11 TC. 3) F10 IC, no reward but those eat who don't compete or drop out for temptations, not clear which style it is without more info. This should be a more intimate challenge that allows the competitors to be aware of and annoyed at those who who feel safe enough to eat. 4) F10 TC. It is pretty simple, follows a tried and true format. At end of episode, two people have joined Matt on Redemption Island to await the next tri-el. I got confused by the digging spec. Could someone post which caps are from the challenge digging and which are from camp? That would help! If the clue says to dig, then most likely production did decide to bury a new idol.   Top

The Sucha is clearly set up for exact numbers of competitors. Half the tribe will be eliminated in the first round, so it's definitely not the kind where people are tempted as the challenge is ongoing. That only works with endurance challenges. As for the type where people decide to compete or eat at the get-go, they wouldn't do that with a challenge that requires a certain number of people. I mean, what if only four people were into it? It would look stupid. I'll see if I can find some other examples of challenges where people have the choice to eat or compete. We have the Tocantins shuffleboard as one. Actually it was Debbie who won that and Tyson got voted out, blindsided. JT, Stephen, and Coach sat out. Please add on!   Top

However, it was a feast with a twist. The object of the Challenge: balance a clay pot on your head while standing on a podium. The Survivors were given the option to participate in the Immunity Challenge if they want to, or sit down and enjoy the feast. Jamie, Stephenie, Rafe and Lydia chose the feast, while all of the former members of the Yaxha tribe plus Judd and Cindy chose to participate in the Challenge. As six of tribemates endured the grueling Guatemalan heat with pots on their heads, the other four gorged themselves on the feast just a few feet away. When host Jeff Probst asked if anybody expected four people would be sitting down to a feast, Jamie piped up with, "Bobby Jon and Brandon know they have a chance of going home tonight, and Judd is up there protecting our lead." Jamie's crass statements sparked a heated exchange between him and Bobby Jon, making it clear they were a tribe divided. Bobby Jon managed keep his composure and stood tall in the Challenge. He responded to Jamie's bullying by saying, "When you start going off at the mouth, I ain't going to let you big-boy me." At the end of the one-hour mark, the competition moved to a tie-breaker round. In this round, Survivors must race to the top of the Maya ruin with the pots on their heads. Gary, the ex-professional football player, sprinted to victory and was first to take the individual Immunity necklace.   Top

Jeff promises the bowl of candy to the one who is bold enough to step down and out of the challenge. Cirie and Erik make a deal to share the candy and together they quit, yanking on their lines and spilling water all over each other. They mow down on the candy, watching everyone else sweat it out. 45 minutes in, Jeff comes out with something else behind his back and Alexis, too excited, jumps the gun, pulling her line and soaking herself before Jeff even offers the dish. The entire tribe laughs, and Jeff tells her there's no chance she’ll get the prize. She takes a seat on the bench, pouting, as Jeff reveals the plate of cookies and a tall glass of milk. Natalie, feeling dizzy, suddenly tumbles off her step, pulling her line and spilling water everywhere. James, laughing at the two girls, cries out, “That would suck!" Ironically, at that moment, he loses his concentration as well, pulling on his line and spilling his bucket of water. The challenge comes down to Ozzy, Amanda, Parvati, and Jason. After an hour, Jeff comes out with three chocolate glazed donuts. Ozzy doesn't hesitate, he drops his arm and yells, "I'll take it!" Ozzy opts out of the challenge for three donuts, leaving Amanda, Parvati, and Jason in the game. At five hours in, Amanda purposefully drops her arm, gets drenched, and runs into the jungle to relieve herself. Parvati and Jason are all that’s left. They face off; both determined to stay in the game. Six hours in, Jeff brings out a tray filled with goodies: three chocolate chip cookies, four doughnuts, a big tall jar of candy, peanut butter, two chocolate bars, a glass of milk, two beers, and a huge pizza. Whichever of the two steps down will share the goodies with the others sitting on the bench. Parvati teases Jason, "You could make friends!" The tribe agrees, telling Jason that if he steps down, they will spare him at Tribal Council. Jason asks for a guarantee from every single person in the game. The entire tribe promises he'll be safe at this night's Tribal Council, Cirie and Alexis with fingers crossed behinds their backs. Jason thinks about it for a moment, prays he's not making the biggest blunder in the game, and finally drops his arm. The bucket of water crashes down on Jason and Parvati wins Individual Immunity. _____________ Ozzy blindsided after he dropped out with 4 remaining -- all for 3 doughnuts. HvV version _______________ IMMUNITY CHALLENGE: WHEN IT RAINS With the challenge underway, Jeff brings out a covered food item to tempt the castaways into stepping down from the challenge. Before Jeff can even uncover this item, Russell and Sandra step down only one minute into the challenge to get their hands on what they soon find out is a plate full of delicious cookies and milk. The remaining tribe members continue to endure, but are tempted again by food. Jeff brings out various food items including donuts and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which is enough to convince Colby, Danielle, Jerri and Candice to give up immunity. It comes down to Rupert and Parvati fighting for the immunity necklace. About an hour into it, Rupert loses his balance, and Parvati wins this challenge for her second time. __________________ Candace voted out.   Top

This challenge will test the Survivors’ memory, as they each have a series of Chinese zodiac symbols on a table in front of them. In each round, Jeff Probst will call out a specific sequence of symbols. The Survivors must place their symbols in the correct order as stated. If they get it correct, they stay in the game. Answer incorrectly and they are out. The last person remaining wins. Before the game begins, Jeff Probst shocks the tribe as they are presented a huge dilemma. They can either participate in the challenge in hopes of winning Immunity, or opt out and gorge on cheeseburgers and french fries. Feeling comfortable with their position in the game, James, Denise, Todd and Courtney elect to eat in lieu of competing, while Peih-Gee, Erik, Amanda and Frosti decide to play. __________ Peih-Gee won, Amanda was the only one of her alliance who competed. "Panama Exile Island" IMMUNITY CHALLENGE: MARINE MEMORY each Survivor is asked to grab a nut and a shell and put them in opposite hands. He then explains that for the Challenge, each person will swim out to a long plank with seven symbols on it resting on the ocean floor. They will have to memorize the symbols in order and race back to the beach, where they will try to replicate those symbols, in order, on their answer board. The first person to solve the puzzle correctly wins Immunity. But there's a twist: participation in this Immunity Challenge is optional. If someone chooses not to participate, they will instead chow down on cheeseburgers, french fries and soft drinks. They can eat for as long as the Challenge goes or until the food runs out. Whoever wants to take part in the Challenge will reveal a shell in their hand. Whoever wants to sit out will show the nut. All but Aras, Terry and Sally choose to sit this one out. As Bruce, Cirie, Courtney, Danielle and Shane all devour hamburgers, Aras, Sally and Terry sprint down the beach toward the water. Terry is first to dive down for a peek at the plank with Aras not far behind him. Terry is also first to return to the beach to solve the puzzle, but Aras thinks he has it solved first. When his answer board proves to be wrong, Aras desperately rushes out to the plank for another look. But yet again, Terry solves the puzzle and wins Immunity. _________ Sally voted out. Note that in this one, the competitors do race away from where the feasters sit, but the puzzle is in view of the feast. In this challenge, poor Aras was the only member of the Casaya alliance to take on the two remaining La Mina.   Top

The TC picture in post # 21, 24, and 82 all look the same to me now. I don't think these posts were as clear before. If you look at post # 38, 48, and 62, you see the "old" version!! (Conspiracy theory, here I come)! Now it is so plain to see (in 21, 24, and 82) that is Rob...Whatever he has on his neck still doesn't look like the IN Natalie wore last week, but that's another thought). "Old" TC picture in post 38, 48, and especially 62, it is so much fuzzier, and there appears to be something all around his neck vs. just on that one shoulder like in new picture. Also, look at post #20, to me, Rob is sitting in TC, with no IN, with some girl to his left with a bun in her hair. I've looked at every TC Rob has been in, and he is NOT sitting next to a girl with her hair in a bun! So which TC is this that we are seeing? TC#1 or TC#2 - or is he sitting in the "dining room" at TC?!?!?; I mentioned when the first version of the TC picture came out, that I saw the shape of the IN (as portrayed on Natalie last week) more on Andrea than on "Rob". I totally realize it looks like a black "wife beater", but his head & face were never that clear in the posts (#21 and #24) before. Did that picture get updated somehow in those posts (but not in posts 38, 48 and 62)??? Just something that makes me go "hmmm".   Top

There was something that you could see around his neck from afar, and something that they "smudged" over in the newer shots....they photoshopped the IN out of the picture, but look at the back of his neck. Clearly, there is more there than just his gold chain. I think Pepe was working on zooming in on Andrea and the results were inconclusive. Hope this helps!   Top

Make the top post a short placeholder so that the thread can be opened without a lot of caps loading. By later in the week we have already seen the initial caps many times. I sometimes view this on my phone, and that is when having to wait for all the first load of preview caps is really clunky. One lead post, which is text not graphics, and then every time new vid caps come out, post them as a reply to the lead post and no other, then let analysis related to those caps thread down from that batch. I think that would help. Squid, many thanks for the press photos, and FlowerPower and VG, big thanks for posting these vidcaps. It's a lot of work and it's so wonderful to have them.   Top
