Now that I can't wait to see. This might actually be a night where John S. can shine.

Funny that they showed a few commericials for Barry Manilow live CD's during the show and now next week is Barry Manilow night...coincidence??

Can't wait to see what George and Jennifer pick for this?

2 soulful singers faced with soulless song choices. Don't get me wrong love some of Barry's stuff-big fan of cheese!

This should prove if they have what it takes in the AI world.

I can see it now- George injecting some gospel into "Daybreak"!

Speaking of the showgirl with yellow feather in her hair and a dress cut down to there...

Whoever manages to grab "Copacabana" is at an advantage, in my opinion. Most people secretly love singing along to that song, and it will be infectious if done well. I'm thinking through Manilow's songs, and they are almost all power ballads (unless you count "Some Kind of Friend," but if anyone sings that horrible song I will gag and be forced to hurl something at the television). I know he's written songs for other performers...does anyone know of any other up-tempo songs he's written?

I must confess, I actually love listening to his songs (most of them). "Mandy" always made me cry as a kid, and "Weekend in New England" is just beautiful. He wrote a lot of jingles--wouldn't it be a riot if someone like JPL decided to sing those? "Have a bucket of chicken, finger-lickin' good, have a barrel of fun..."

A lot of Bette Midlers early stuff was written by Barry so I'm sure there will be some good pickin's there.

I still remember seeing pictures of Barry and Bette working on stage amidst all the steam in a bath house in NYC.

21. "A short list of songs..."
Did you know that he did not write "I Write the Songs." Isn't that weird? He also didn't write "Mandy" or "Weekend in New England!" Amazing what you find out when you start looking on the web. Anyway, I don't know if they'll let the contestants choose from his playlist, or just from the songs he actually wrote.

Here's a short list of songs that he both wrote and performed (I'm sure there are more):

Quentin Tarantino! This could be the most interesting AI yet! That's awesome. I hope he does tell the truth 'cause that would be joyous. All the guest judges are too nice, like Paula or they don't say much.

That does mean that we have to wait a week until Barry, but we'll just have to deal. Too bad for John Stevens that Barry isn't next week! But, with movie songs he can probably find something from an old movie that works for his style.

Can't believe that Barry didn't write "I write the songs". I feel used and abused.

from the article about camile getting voted out on the realitytvworld home page:

Next week, actor/director Quentin Tarantino will be the guest judge as the remaining eight finalists perform songs from their favorite movies on Tuesday, April 13 (8-9 PM ET/PT). On Wednesday, April 14 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), Christina Christian, another American Idol finalist from the first season, will perform "Forever or Never," from her forthcoming debut album, for the live studio audience and television viewers across the nation.

Sounds like a good one, it won't force someone to do something they should never be trying in the first place.

what are the odds of JPL doing "footloose," that was the very first one to come to mind when i read the theme. he can "bust some moves" and he doesn't need an amazing voice to sing the song.

You cant forget about RICO, Lola's MAN...

I think they will allow them to sing any of the songs that Barry either sang or wrote, as long as the song is on the approved AI list and is allowed to be sung.

SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT is a great song, maybe for John S.

I would have loved to have heard CLAY sing Barry.

What do they do if more than one contestant wants to sing Copa?

Barry Manilow - Copa Cabana

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair, and a dress cut down to there
She would Merengue and do the Cha-Cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 'til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more

Chorus:
At the Copa, Copa Cabana
The hottest spot North of Havana
Here at the Copa, Copa Cabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa

They fell in love

Copa, Copa Cabana

His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew, and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who

{Chorus}
She lost her love

Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana

Copa, Copa Cabana
Life in Havana
Have a banana
Music and passion, always in fashion

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
And that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she lost her mind

{Chorus}
Don't fall in love
Don't fall in love
Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana

Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana (repeat 'til end)

39. "RE: His name was RICO....."
That's ok, but I think the lyrics you are refering to are:

"Tony sailed across the bar
and then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
there was blood and a single gun shot
but just who shot who?"

40. "Movie Theme-Recommended Songs"
On Entertainment Tonight, Paula confirmed next week's theme would be Songs from the Movies with guess judge Quentin Tarantino. It will definately be a fun week! She also said we are going to here songs from "Westside Story", "Grease" and "Flashdance"...hmmmm I wonder who could EVER do these?

Here are my predictions for songs they should pick (good for their voice and range):

Jasmine-"A Whole New World" (come on now, she could show some pride in her name and it's a good song for her)

George-"Shout" (Animal House among others) or "I'm a Soul Man" from "Blues Brothers"..he would be awesome at both

John S.- grrr..."Just the Way you Look Tonight" or "Zipp pa dee Doo da"...Ghostbusters would be pretty funny personally I think!
hahaha

Diana-"On My Own" from Les Miserables..she would really prove herself but I put money that she is the one doing "Grease"...ugh (my pick to win is not making good selections here people!)

LaToya -"Memories" (from Cats)..she would WOW everyone, and almost guarantee one of the top two positions. She might be the one doing West Side Story

JPL-I liked the suggestion of "Footloose" but you can bank he's doing "I'm a Maniac" from Flashdance...this will be bad.

As for Fantasia and Jennifer, I'm still pondering...

John S could pull off "Maria" from WSS i think, and "Singing in the Rain" he could do too. Or he might try and build on last weeks somewhat positive performance and try something different again, but my guess is he's stepping back inside his box this week.
