P.S. Is that Nat/Mick/Brett again in the overhead shots walking along the beach? Or a different trio? Hard for me to tell. If it's the same threesome again then I like Michel's idea that they're waiting to be picked up from reward.

Jaison's quote: I also thought this could be foreshadowing of Jaison's exit later on when he doesn't win immunity. If it's down to the four Foas, as Jeff and the editing keeps throwing in our faces (there has been a lot of focus on their comeback) and Jaison doesn't win immunity, he's gone. I also found Mitch's first million dollar quote interesting last night. Combine that with Jaison's quote and Natalie saying she would stick with Russell, we have Jaison's exit. Jaison talked about a Brett immunity win screwing up the plans of Brett going, but there was also subtext talking about not winning immunity, so I took that to have more meaning than just Brett.

13. "Footprints" |
With apologies to Survivor Fever for messing up his/her caps. I'm seeing here what I assume are "coming" and "going" footprints. The blue arrow shows where the three walked out, let's say away from camp, and the green shows where they are walking back. The red arrow shows footprints off the side, which I will assume are the camera crew. In this wider shot, you can see that the "going" footprints are in sync with the crew (again, assuming here), but then they suddenly veer off toward the water's edge. The group is now walking away from that point, which is curiously marked by some deep indentations in the sand. I've pointed out these marks with the pink arrow. Pontoon marks? Some sort of seacraft or boat? In the next two even wider shots, my scribbling isn't really necessary. You can see the indentations in the sand, with footprints leading directly to, and now away, from them.
So, I propose that this is indeed a reward trip, as others have suggested above, and that these are the "returning" shots. Note that the footprints in the sand are different; the sand at the time that they left was mushier and their feet sunk and made deep marks. At the time that they return, the sand under their feet is dryer and harder and they aren't leaving very noticeable prints. Would someone who has knowledge of tides be able to estimate the length of time they were away, or the time of day? I know nothing of tide stuff, except don't mix colours with whites. So Nat-Mick-Brett ganging up on Russ is, of course, misdirection. They are away together merely by luck of the draw at a reward challenge. Here, they celebrate their win. What is Mick holding?

There is also a high-tide line. The footprints going out are above the high-tide line. They are walking back below the high-tide line where the sand is more compacted. This indicates many many hours between the walk out and the walk back. Add to that the long shadows on the walk back, they have only so much time before the sun sets.

Nice catch, Frisqui!Tides are usually 8 hours apart, they could well have walked over to the take-off boat ride at a higher tide leaving foot prints is softer, unwet sand above high tide, and returned 8 hours later with the tide low, allowing them to return on harder packed sand. I think I just repeated what you said. That does look like a boat mark in the sand. The camera crew probably has a launch/delivery point, and that could conceivable be that, but with the foot prints and all, I think you nailed it. The roughed up areas farther inland from the camer crew tracks could be their off duty waiting area. The ridge of the sand dune probably marks the high point of the highest tides.

LAST EDITED ON 12-11-09 AT 05:19 PM (EST)Those sure do look like pontoon marks. Color me very impressed, frisky. kingfish is right about the sand, I think. It is the dry sand where people make big scuffy footprints. The damp sand near the water but not being hit by it is the hard packed sand. When you walk right in the wet edge of the sand where waves are coming in, then your feet sink in but the water action smoothes out any prints. Re time of day, if you replay Day 32 (Monica boot) from last episode, you can see the sun is rising almost directly out from their beach. If the shadow are pointing inland, then it should be early morning. That could indicate returning from an overnight reward. There are seven days left in the game, so this will be a 3 day cycle. Day 33, 34, 35. Day 36 will be F5, last day to play the idol. btw, note that at this point they've definitely figured out it's a F3. Jaison is working on the right calendar, and they are talking about Russell taking Nat and Shambo as opposed to Mick and Jaison. ETA OK, I think I got that wrong. First on the day, they showed sunrise of BOTH days of last Ep as Day 32, so one is wrong. Probably they never showed Day 31, and the episode showed Days 32 and 33. Then this will start on July 14th. Second, even though they show sunrise shots, looking at the map I cannot see any possible way they can see the sun rise over the ocean from a beach on the south coast. It's July so the sun is farthest north in the ecliptic and rising to the northeast, more or less. All I can think is they are using sunrise shots taken on the other side of the island, although they do have a land point in them that looks like the view from camp. Can anyone help with this? Note: on the tower beanbag challenge, which was on a small beach, possibly Matareva, the shadows are on the ocean side of the towers, indicating the sun is shining from over the island, which would be right for late morning. Anyway, if the sunrise shots are fake establishing shots, then I guess the three are walking near sunset, as dabo said.

19. "Tide info" |
LAST EDITED ON 12-11-09 AT 05:30 PM (EST)I found the tide info, but first, another argument in support of frisky's idea. They went to the trouble to get this beach walk shot with the helicopter. The helicopter time is expensive and they tend to save it for special times. They would use the helicopter to follow the boat in. I doubt it would be around to catch some early morning beach walk. Tide info: (the ep will start on 7/13. Reward could be on 7/13 or 7/14, or even an overnight with a return on the morning of 7/15, the IC day. Variables - they could have a no challenge day on Day One, as they've had three challenge days in a row and little time for tending to camp. They can send them on reward the same day or the next day. However, keep in mind it will be raining on Day 3 (per Ponderosa video). Day ONE 2009-07-14 5:37 AM WST 0.20 meters Low Tide 2009-07-14 6:51 AM WST Sunrise 2009-07-14 11:44 AM WST 0.73 meters High Tide 2009-07-14 5:55 PM WST 0.15 meters Low Tide 2009-07-14 6:14 PM WST Sunset 2009-07-14 10:54 PM WST Last Quarter ------------------------------------------ DAY TWO 2009-07-15 12:24 AM WST 0.80 meters High Tide 2009-07-15 6:45 AM WST 0.18 meters Low Tide 2009-07-15 6:51 AM WST Sunrise 2009-07-15 12:49 PM WST 0.72 meters High Tide OK, so the difference between high and low tide is between 1/2 and 2/3 of one meter. That is in elevation above sea level, not feet of sand. Tide extremes occur 6-7 hours apart. There is a high tide at night. As kingfish noted, if the outgoing footprints are above the high tide mark, the footprints wouldn't get washed away and probably the reason they would walk above the high tide mark is that the tide was near high when they left. The high tide on Day One is 11:45 am, on Day Two, 12:49 pm. On Day ONE there is a low tide about 6pm, twenty minutes before sunset. They could be returning a bit before the low tide, as there is wetter sand above them, which should mean the tide has been ebbing. That would be consistent with them leaving in early afternoon and returning maybe an hour before sunset.

I was thinking messages from home, too, Squid. Has Jeff ever given RC winners the package after the challenge to take with them back to camp with a "don't open until you're on the reward" caveat? Seems like a weird way to go about it. They are due for the letters/videos, though.

14. "RE: Episode 13, "Two Heads are better than one", Vidcaps" |
good call about the reward, guys ...I would think the beach walk is the group left behind. Natalie is starving and lost the chance to eat; she has the spear; they are probably foraging. Maybe they find some food and that's why they're celebrating. With Brett winning immunity, Russell would have to risk alienating all his FF allies, including Natalie, to hang on the Shambo. There is no reason to keep her other than to start stabbing his original alliance in the back. I think he just has to write her off; Brett screwed up his little F5 plan. Plus Monica told him that Shambo would get Galu votes. I'm not sure that's true, but Russell could buy it. This is another episode where Mick and Jaison may still want to make a move but he won't have the numbers. He needs four and he won't get Natalie. One would think Shambo would be glad to save herself, but she doesn't seem to be playing that kind of game. Seems like Jaison plans to make it to the final 4 immunity and keep himself in the game through competition -- the honorable way to get rid of Russell. I think he's going to be mad when Russell shafts him. That's where the Mick Natalie Brett bonding can pay off, at F5, when Brett has the deciding vote if the Foa Foa are split at which FF should be the first to go. The bonding plus Jaison is so strong and competitive, and Brett wants to keep winning immunity. Wouldn't be surprised if Jaison goes out 4-1. If they don't feature Shambo in the previews, may just be they want to create some suspense again and give us the idea that there will be a coup against Russell. Shambo has had so much face time we don't need to see her. I'm sure we'll see her in the episode, especially if she goes on reward.

hmmm, it seems I wasn't the only one to go with foraging. Volcanic Glass has this cap featured at Phoenix, captioned Foraging.I always thought it was a spear. I forgot to ask why she is grasping the spear if she just got off a boat from reward, mostly because frisky's read of the tracks and the marks blew my socks off and I scrapped what I had said in my post above. Thoughts?

Awesome job Frisky, esp. in noticing the pontoon marks!!! And all the tide info from Kingfish and OFG are great too.Agree with OFG's point that SEG wouldn't use the helicopter crew for an everyday morning walk on the beach. Also, the shots of Jaison and Russell sleeping next to each other at night could possibly be when the B/N/M reward group is away, possibly for an overnight. (Does Shambo still sleep alone in her tree? If so, that leaves the 2 brains of the episode title left alone in the shelter.) P.S. OFG, minor note, but I'm pretty sure that Monica says in her Ponderosa clip #1 that she got voted out on Day 33. She could have been mixed up, but I think it's also in the caption. (I need to double check on that....because Dave said in his Ponderosa clip that he was Day 31...so were they 1 day or 2 days apart?) Would it make sense for this next episode to be Days 34/35/36...then the finale 37/38/39? Is that how they typically do it? Or is there an extra day for the finale, in which case this ep should start at 32?

LAST EDITED ON 12-11-09 AT 05:37 PM (EST)You're right Squid. I had been looking at last night's ep, the only one I have on DVR, and just edited my two posts above. The show captioned both days as Day 32. I check ed twice. But I concluded Monica had to be Day 33. Thanks for the confirmation. If you wouldn't mind rereading the edited posts, I had to change my mind about time of day based on their orientation to the sun per the map ... thoughts on that? Excellent point about Jaison and Russell sleeping together, the two brains. It does seem like the time is right for the one overnight trip, but HELP I can't figure out whether the sunrise shots are really from their beach or not. Has anyone ever seen a sunset shot on this season, with people or camp in it? On an island like that, you can see one or the other over the ocean, not both.

OFG, I do not recall a sunset shot from camp this season, but I must admit I don't pay attention as closely to that kind of stuff....maybe Michel or someone else will know. I vaguely recall a group hug on the beach after the bad rains finally stopped and the sun came out again, but no details.Your new/edited info all makes sense, and it's very possible that they use establishing shots from other areas and/or they're coming back at sunset. Also, other than the sliding rocks trip, I think the rewards this season have been pretty paltry. Given that it's the end of the game and they skipped one altogether last episode (and there's no family visit), it sure seems like they're due for a good one, with a strong possibility of an overnight. (In which case, the sunrise shots could be from the reward site.)

LAST EDITED ON 12-12-09 AT 06:38 AM (EST)Thanks Frisky! The palm tree shadows are going the opposite direction from the walkers' shadows.
If the rainbow is morning, then morning sunlight comes across the island interior and the sunrise shots shown twice in Ep 12 were not shot at Galu beach at all, which is what the map tells me. This should be late afternoon because the shadows are so long, as dabo noted. They could have spent the night and been gone for 24 hours, I suppose. We do see Russell and Jaison in the night shot talking about blindsiding and I don't think they could carry on that conversation with five people in the shelter. Yes, I think Shambo has slept in her tree the whole time. If they did leave the day before, then there has been a high tide since they left, at about midnight. The only way the outgoing footsteps are still there is if they walked above the high tide line on the way out. About Mick's package, it could be videos from home. It could be something to give the Samoans. Could be letters too. But it would be odd to send it back to camp. They can easily bring out those things at the reward. Possibly they could get videos for them only but could get a bundle of letters to bring back to everyone, has been done before. Various possibilities.

>>>Would it make sense for this next episode to be Days 34/35/36...then the finale 37/38/39? Is that how they typically do it? Or is there an extra day for the finale, in which case this ep should start at 32?The Finale will have the F5 TC, F4 TC and F3 TC, so that will be days 37, 38, 39. If the producers choose, they could have the F5 cycle be two days, in which case the F6 is two days. Or F5 could be one day, which is more likely. Either way, Jaison is wrong about Day 36. Day 37 will be F5 TC. He may still be counting on a F2 after all. Maybe by him and Mick saying Russ would take Nat or Sham he means to what he thinks will be the final immunity.

Well deserved mention! frisky is a vidcap goddess this week in particular! TDT has a link to an article where possible rewards were written up for this season at Suite101.com. This was based on locations the crew visited during S19. "Sua Ocean Trench, the lava fields/lava tubes (a cave-like environment), and the Satoalepai Wetlands, where one can swim with sea turtles at a sanctuary." "There may also be a reward filmed at the Tradewinds Hotel in nearby American Samoa. The hotel is owned by the same individuals who own the Samoan land on which the season was filmed. As part of negotiations, they wanted a reward to be filmed at their resort; however, the producers were unsure whether they should allow this, probably because the resort’s grand size and appearance go against the notion of the castaways being completely cut off from civilization. It is still unclear which party got their way in this matter." (shades of Hotel Contadora) "It is also likely that a traditional pig roast will be a part of one of the rewards this season, probably a visit to a Samoan village." Of these, I checked on location of Sua Ocean Trench and it is a land excursion not that far from the camps, on the south coast, so I'm not sure why they would go in the pontoon. A trip to the Tradewinds Hotel would be by air, so they would need to go to the airport, which is north of the camps. Not sure if boat is best way to get there either. Wonder if they saved this grand reward for All-Stars. Then there is the pig roast. If they visited a traditional village on the smaller island of Manono, where there are no cars or dogs, that is accessed by boat. No doubt they could pick another village to stage for a pig roast. but that would be the most authentic option. Also it would require an overnight stay, as the boats back don't run at night. The lava fields and the turtle swim are on Savai'i (the other major island, to the northwest of them). This is usually reached by ferry, but perhaps helicopter would work. Boat transport could possibly take them to the ferry, which is northwest of the camps. Personally I think they should do a Samoan Village feast, as they have not had one demonstration of the Samoan culture all season, and we've already seen two picnics at waterfalls, enough swimming holes for one season. Don't get me wrong; I love seeing those places, but they need some island culture in this thing.

I'm wondering if those two pontoonish lines isn't too close for an actual pontoon boat and those marks might be the landing marks of a helicopter?

LAST EDITED ON 12-13-09 AT 04:36 AM (EST)Interesting idea, vince. We know there is a helicopter in the vicinity taking the aerial shots. I looked up the basic rules for a helicopter landing site: 4-3. LANDING POINTS These are areas/points (designated by the pathfinder leader) that can support the weight of a helicopter. As a guide, a helicopter requires a relatively level, cleared, circular area from 25 to 100 meters in diameter for landing. This depends on the type of helicopter. The area around the landing point must be cleared of all trees, brush, stumps, or other obstacles that could damage the helicopter. ..Considerations such as helicopter type, nature of load, climate, and visibility affect what size landing point is used for a particular landing site. a. The surface of the landing point center must be level and sufficiently firm to allow a fully loaded helicopter to land and, if necessary, to shut down, restart, and depart without sinking into the ground. The term "hard surface" indicates the proper condition. b. The entire landing point must be cleared of any loose material that could be blown up by the rotors. Helicopter that made emergency landing on the beach. The tail injury happened in the landing. Gives a look at the landing feet, what's not buried in the sand. ETA - I don't know if they would land a helicopter on the beach, but I saw the main helo pad they used in the Cook Islands (after the filming). It was a big clearing they had made with markers to be seen clearly from the air, and it was all hard packed ground.

LAST EDITED ON 12-13-09 AT 10:05 AM (EST)A helicopter with floats or a small airplane are within the realms of possibility, maybe, but the helicopter isn't maneuverable after landing (a crew could hop out and tow it in I suppose) and the float plane would probably need calmer waters than exist there, even inside the reef. I don't really know, but my guess would be that choppy waters around Samoa would mean that float planes or float helicopters weren't practical, thus not available. I was picturing photo ops of indigenous guys (strong and expert in handling these boats) dressed in native garb paddling up in native canoes/dugouts and picking and delivering the reward winners to a native meal/ceremony. Alternatively, the hotel probably has a few of these for taking tourists out for rides if the reward is a trip there. Don't they do that in Hawaii? They even surf similar outrigger canoes with tourists, right? ED - however, considering the distance betwen the marks, it would seem that the were probably made by a Zodiac type motor boat(s), or a flat botton pontoon boats).

>>>Don't they do that in Hawaii? They even surf similar outrigger canoes with tourists, right? Not that I'm aware of ... but Samoa is different, not Americanized. In Hawai'i we have canoe clubs and races. Tourists watch. Tourists rent kayaks. This type of canoe stays inside the protected bays, like I said. Re replicas of traditional canoes: Hokulea is a replica of an original Polynesian voyaging canoe. The voyaging canoes were much larger. They carried families and their livestock and even crops. And they sail. Rowing is way too hard a way to traverse open ocean. I have been just outside the reef in a traditonal canoe on Rarotonga, for a fishing charter. Carried about four people and it was motorized, as that was the only way to move around out in the swells. It departed and came back to a dock. Canoes that are not motorized get pushed up into the sand and pushed out. Not that I am any kind of boat expert. I have gone on a few boat cruises in the Aitutaki lagoon though, and without exception we embarked and disembarked in the shallow water. In other words, the bottom of the boat had to stay clear of the lagoon bottom. Jeff's motorboat that he cruises around in for some seasons would be similar. Speaking of which, we haven't seen Jeff showing up at the beach in his boat here, have we? It may be too shallow where they are. I don't know as much about Upolu island as I would like. One thing I don't know is whether a boat can travel around the island inside the reef. Based on what I see from the beaches, it doesn't look like it. Too shallow, too much coral, looks similar to Rarotonga, which you most definitely can't navigate inside the reef. Boat rides are only on the east side, and they're flat bottomed boats. Aitutaki (Cooks) was a very unusual island because it has a huge and often deep lagoon around it that can handle large boats. (As for the Hawaiian islands, they don't have lagoons around them and are exposed to the force of the ocean except in certain areas. Thus the great surfing. Certain coasts are not even done by small craft at all; the swells are just too big.)

I was so busy this weekend I completely forgot I had this promo on my TV and could watch it on a bigger screen in HD frame by frame. Duh.chaoswa is right, Mick's holding his folded up jeans in the "pact" scene. Russell, Jaison, Shambo clearly win reward, because Russell and Jaison are lying in a made up bed with real pillows, and as Georjanna noted, a hemmed sheet, with a gauzy curtain blowing next to Russell. The beach walkers - Natalie has the spear and she's in her yellow dress, not a bathing suit. Mick has a canteen or something, a strap across his chest, maybe the collection bag. Brett is swinging the machete in his right hand, pretty sure, or else a stick. But I think it's the machete. Foraging. There are a lot of footprints ... and some of them go past those marks that look like a boat pulled up. The marks are really hard to see, but could be some ripples in the sand causing shadows. And yes, for some reason the helicopter has nothing better to do than hover over them; perhaps the pilot is bored. I REALLY enjoyed all the fun work we did here. I don't care if it was a little wrong; I learned stuff and had a good time, and that makes me happy.

LAST EDITED ON 12-14-09 AT 04:26 AM (EST)Re the reward possibilities: they stay overnight, which could be after a feast or at the Tradewinds Hotel in Pago Pago, American Samoa. Here's a map of the islands. Apia and Pago Pago are 77 miles apart.
Inter Island Airways offers Twice (2) daily On-Demand (Public Charter) flights between Pago Pago and Apia, and Apia to Pago Pago, using the 19-Seater Dornier 228. I don't think the rooms in the Tradewinds look like where the guys are sleeping; I'm thinking they're in a fale hut type accommodation. Check the link above and you can see the hotel rooms. It's not Survivor looking at all, but apparently the owners also own the land SEG is leasing for the camps, and they wanted a promo. S20 maybe? Other options: If you look at that map, see the little island of Manono at the western tip of Upolu. That's the place I was saying would be good for a village visit, though not the only option. Manono was until recently off grid, allows no dogs or cars, and life there is supposedly more traditional. The castaways are staying on the southwest coast. Or they could go over to Lalomanu on the east coast, where the jury was taken one day, the day that ended at a market where they shopped. (btw, Lalomanu was swept away by the tsunami) The turtle swim area on Savai'i also has fales for sleeping. I did read that the turtle place is kind of run down and the turtles not too happy, so I hope they didn't pick it. The other options are, again, Sua Ocean Trench and the lava fields. The Ocean Trench is a sunken swimming hole that connects by tunnel to the ocean. The current comes in and swirls people around. It's got a difficult ladder climb to get out. It's located on the south coast, and accessed by 4WD. No overnight accommodations specifically tied to it, but easy enough to arrange something at one of the resorts along the coast there.

I wouldn't be too certain that Shambo votes for Russell to win. She might. But if she has all the facts, knows the truth, she won't. He lied to her.Okay, so all season long they have been listing Shambo as a "Former Marine." I know some Marines who are now in civilian life and none of them think of themselves as "former" Marines. They still think of themselves as Marines and conduct their lives accordingly. This in part explains why Shambo has been the way she has been on the show, she won't do anything to in any way discredit the Marine Corps, that is unthinkable. (And, as it turns out, that sensibility also partly explains why she is horrible at the game part of Survivor.) So, Russell lied to her. Shambo's enemies (Dave, Kelly, Laura, Monica) have all been sent to the jury. And she has two friends on the jury, Erik and John. Russell told Shambo that John was gunning for her, that they left her out of the loop so that she wouldn't have to betray her word and vote for John. Smart to play on her Marine pride while she's in the game. But what happens when she goes to the jury? What happens when John points out to her that no one voted for her at that TC? He voted to boot Mick. She voted to boot Dave. Everyone else voted to boot him. Shambo thinks in terms of gunning down the bad guy, she's a Marine, and if she has the facts Russell is the last bad guy.

A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.Yeah, I agree that Lil was kind of embarrassing. And Shambo isn't all that either. And they were both horrible at the Survivor game. More to the point, though, is that they both tried to live up to their core beliefs. I don't think Shambo has failed at all in that respect. Once a Marine always a Marine.

Good job, everyone! This episode seems pretty well spoiled. Team anti-social wins reward. The nice people go foraging and play nice together (whether that means something or they're just, you know, nice thataway). Shambo's story is finished, she has no more enemies to gun for.Does Russell play the HII? It's his last chance to use it. "Blindside everybody?" At this point Russ himself would be the biggest blindside. Cause it's what Russ would do. Brett wouldn't be a blindside. Shambo is the fifth FF wheel, dispensible now, not a blindside except perhaps to Shambo herself. Mick and Jaison have both given Russell cause for concern, Nat alone seems bull's-eye free.

I don't know. They haven't shown the rules this season. The past, indicating a F2 or F3 season: PEI -good through F4 (F2) Cooks - don't recall, wasn't played (F3). Fiji - Earl played his idol at F5 (F3) China - I don't recall them hiding an idol after James left with both. Fans v. Faves - F5 (F2) Gabon - F6, Day 36 (F3) Sugar gives to Matty Tocantins - not played, not sure if Jeff mentioned it.The players seem to know the rules, so if Jaison says Day 36, and Monica says Day 36 to Russell, and he doesn't disagree, even in confessional - it's probably Day 36 like Gabon. It's not clear whether the idol rules this season state a number of Survivors left in the game or a day of the game. If they went with a day, that would explain how they're all so certain, as they don't know the calendar; even though it's close enough to the end to do the math.
