I rather agree- I think the writers went into seasons 1 & 2 without a clear end-plan. At season 3 they decided they had to write an ending to the whole saga and the show really changed- re-watching the pilot some of the things really made no sense at all in the context of the finally (ie Walt). Even Smokey changed quite a bit. But what could they do? Seasons 1 & 2 were water under the bridge so to speak.
