Michel, I agree with you, too! I also wondered what's left for Jacob to protect - he basically got the job and screwed it up immediately by either creating or releasing the smoke monster. Oops.
Good point too about Jacob not knowing what he's protecting paralleling Desmond punching the numbers. Jacob didn't want to take the job, either, but he had to. Makes me think that he may have started bringing "Candidates" to the island right away to get out of his obligation (thereby exposing the island to lots of bad people.) He also died the same way Crazy Mama CJ did - knife through the gut.
