"Survivor #18 Episode #13 (finale & reunion) East Coast Spoiler Thread" |
Please keep all sigpic-free discussion of tonight's conclusion confirmed to this thread until 2 a.m. Monday, by which time the West Coast will have presumably finished checking itself into the emergency room after all our Benji-themed drinking games once again go tragically wrong. And with that said... ...imagine, just for a moment, that you work in a fairly upscale strip club as one of the dancers. You're on stage. A very sleazy-looking man with greased-back hair who's wearing a fur coat in the heart of summer walks in, sits down, signals you over, and tells you, with a big grin, that he has a really great tip for you. Now given your experience with such individuals, you're fully expecting something along the lines of 'Don't bet on horses', but you have a job to do and you can't throw a potential customer out until he actually does something wrong. So you go over and he, with an even bigger grin, the kind you just instinctively want to hit, takes two rolls of pennies out of his pocket. Breaks the first one open. Licks the top penny up and down, up and down, tongue all the way out of his mouth. And tells you he's going to do this for every last one of them, then stick them to your skin one by one. Anything which doesn't fall off by the time you reach the dressing room, you can keep. And as the bouncer removes him, he keeps staring at you, eyes locked all the way through the door, and the only expressions on his face are betrayal and hurt. Don't you know he was just trying to do you a favor? Got the picture? Good. Because that's the season. We've been skeeved out on a scale this show never even dared to dream of before we hit the highlands, and the show fully expects us to be thankful for it. Aren't we glad the show went to such extremes in order to disturb and disgust us? Don't we understand that no matter how we personally feel about what's going on, the point is that it got a reaction out of us -- and it doesn't matter what that reaction was as long as they got one? Jeff's been trying to sell that line since the first screams of outrage echoed across the boards: agree or disagree with him, he feels it's great television and doesn't understand how anyone could ever take the second choice. (And if we did, it's still great television: how can we stand to miss it?) Sorry, but Hobson's Choice does not apply here, because there's always another option: turn it off. We can take stunt casting, and have. Recyclables don't always smell so horrible as to land back in the bin five seconds later. And while we're sick onto death of so-called islands for exiles with no water in sight, idols that do nothing, and contestants incapable of starting a fire if their limbs were burning, we are, gawds help us, used to it. But... I said this a little earlier in the week: 'Evil can be charming. Stupid, never so.' We have embraced some of our genre's villains, admitted they were acting with a goal in mind and were doing nothing but advancing their cause, step by step. We do not accept the casually arrogant who can never back it up, the egomaniacs building a house of cards with no bottom floor. There is no tolerable for the delusional, the self-proclaimed saviors, and those with outright god complexes? Can't leave soon enough. And didn't. Taj, Erinn, Steven, and JT. As a group, we could probably accept any of the four as the winner: Steven planned for it, JT stayed alive as a challenge threat, Taj survived her own inability to work through a plan, and Erinn -- existed. But think of what we had to go through in order to get here. Think of who we had to go through. I know -- one name, right? Don't let his assistant be forgotten so easily... It's good television, Jeff insists, and he has to insist on that, because part of his job is lying to us at every turn. He's paid not to be objective. We have to balance that out. We'll take characters. Characters can be fun. But there's a fine line between eccentric and insane, and that line was crossed this season. There was a reaction, all right -- and for a lot of people, the sound of that reaction reads as *click*. Maybe the ending can still somehow work. But the central story told was the tale of a fool who did not know enough -- and still doesn't know -- to spot his own folly. A fool dedicated to dragging down everyone around him and getting them to thank him for the trip. Now: Am I talking about Benji with an assist from Tyson? Or MB aided and abetted by Jeff? Maybe it's both... Take your pennies and choke on them.

I's a few minutes behind, but I cannot believe they voted Taj out -- Steven and JT totally underestimated the value of Erin being an original Jalapeno member to the jury. I think we just saw the total destruction of a great game play to that point. Spontaneous combustion in the final four for JT and Steven. The stupid thing about their desperation here at the end, is that by putting their own desire to win over the end game, they have practically ensured that Erin will win if she makes the final two -- and I don't think that's the outcome either of them wanted. If it had been between JT/Taj/Steven, it would have been more of a success, than if they let the last Jalapeno win the whole enchilada.

>I cannot believe they voted Taj out -- Steven and >JT totally underestimated the value of Erin being an original >Jalapeno member to the jury. I think we just >saw the total destruction of a great game play to >that point. I think it was a brilliant move. Erinn turned her back on most of her entire tribe so there's not much loyalty there. Taj is far more popular than Erinn and she's a bigger challenge threat as well. JT/Stephen would have been more in control of their destinies by going up against Erinn in the F3 challenge than if they went up against Taj, and the worst thing that could have happened would be if Erinn won immunity and had to take one of the boys - the one that Erinn took would still have won the final vote easily. Coach and Tyson were never going to vote for Erinn under any circumstance, they'd vote for a warrior instead. JT or Stephen would have definitely voted for the other. Taj would have continued to support her tribemate. Gamewise, it was a move I would have made as well to better guarantee my spot in the final two.

Did anyone else notice that Jeff never read the RESULTS of the lie detector test? All he read was the question and the answer. No indication as to whether the person giving the test said that Coach was telling the truth or not. Of course, lie detectors aren't always correct- if Coach thinks it happened, it could come out as being truthful even if it never happened.

LAST EDITED ON 05-18-09 AT 05:34 AM (EST)It sucks watching everything six hours behind ... sigh. I want to vent and everyone else went to bed. Well, I always thought JT would win, but I had a teensy hope they would respect what Stephen did. I thought the jury sucked for voting JT unanimously and America sucked for voting Sierra and not Stephen. Must be the text message crowd. Ugh. I felt bad for the pre-jury folks who have to sit on the back bench and be ignored just because no one remembers who they are. Funny, JT gave essentially the same answer to what will you do with your money as Brian Heidik. It was OK for Eddie to mention the weight loss because that was Taj's goal, to lose her baby weight, and no doubt she's proud she didn't go home and turn into a blimp like some of the others. If it hadn't been important to her than yeah, it would have been unfortunate he said that. Eddie would look good on Survivor Samoa! I still feel bad for Stephen and need to go drink some more ... having done that, on reflection, I think that whole jury questioning was faux. The moment they walked in to the F3 and saw JT had immunity, the game was over, no matter who he picked. They all wanted him to win. So they went back to the Ponderosa and agreed to put on a good front and worry the two of them good, and let them sweat, and have their moment on the teevee ... but they all knew how they were voting.

First, let me just say that I can learn, and that I am open to well intentioned criticism. So I will henceforth bring rolls of dimes on weekdays, and quarters on weekends. Maybe Sacagawea’s on holidays. No more pennies.I would have voted for JT. He was more actively engaged in the game, he won more ICs and RCs, and strategically, he played the others better for jury votes. He managed to keep his mouth shut (which, as any Survivor enthusiast knows is essential), and Stephen basically used JT to get as far as he did. I was disappointed that JT didn't take Erin to F2. In a game one should always follow what seems to be the best strategy, and if he thought Erin would be easier to beat, that is what he should have done. I'm not as sure that he would be successful against Erin, I think Erin might have got Sierra, Taj, and Debbie's votes, and just one more from the men (Brendan maybe? Stephen?) would have done it for her.

I agree that it worked out well, and, given the results, it was the best strategy.I was just speaking to his opinion before the final vote that he thought Erin would be the easier F2 to beat. And since that was his opinion, I was disappointed that he didn't take her. It worked out well for him, and I suspect Erin would have been harder (contrary to JT's opinion) to beat. But, if one thinks that Plan A (in this case, Erin) is more likely to succeed than plan B (Stephen), one should go with plan A. Probably JT would have beaten Erin too. But you never know, she did have al her Timbera teammates on the Jury. She might have got 4 of them. Coach? Never. Tyson? Never. The women, maybe. Stephen?

I have to believe that part of the reason JT won unanimously is that it is just human nature, between 2 people you pretty much like, to want to give the money to the person who needs it the most. I don't think that Erinn had a prayer of winning. Of the 3 who realistically could have won, Taj seriously does not need the money and Stephen will be fine also. Taj and Stephen were playing not so much for the monwy as to win the game, not that there is anything wrong with that. I doubt that JT needs the money as badly as he believes he does, but certainly more than Taj and Stephen.

I agree, I think the "need" and "reward" factor does come into the jury vote in some sense. WE don't think it should, but almost all those players are out there playing to change their life through freeing themselves up economically. Thus they all consider it. Even Brendan said straight up that he wanted JT to win because it would change his life. The editors take out most of that talk, but on a show like Big Brother with live feeds, we get to hear just how much the players factor in need, and consider other players with need to be threats. I read Stephen's pre-game interview where he said that working for big corporations is sucking his soul out of him; he sounded very discouraged with the way his life is going, and that's why he agreed to be on the show, on top of his enjoyment of playing games. He wants to be able to write. JT, OTOH, likes what he does. Having a BA in English doesn't open all the doors for you, even if it's from Yale. Trust me. At least none of the finalists were models or bartenders.

Stephen lost because he hid so well behind JT that nobody on the jury believed he did anything but ride JT's coattails. Debbie and Sierra both said they did not think Stephen was playing the game till they watched the show on TV. The jury simply did not think Stephen deserved it as much as JT. JT won more challenges and did the smoozing when it was needed. Taj also felt more betrayed by Stephen since he was suppose to be her ally from the beginning. Sierra and Brendan also thought they were in a cross-tribal alliance with him and were betrayed. JT never gave the jury members the feeling he betrayed them as much as Stephen did. JT played a better game than Stephen did.

It was a great season overall. And Stephen screwed up at Final Tribal. Starting with Brendan's question to him (the first jurist) he should have stood his ground.Survivor isn't an athletic competition, it isn't a camping trip, it isn't even really a social experiment no matter how much Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst would like you to buy into that. It's a game. Everyone who shows up on day 1 to play the game deserves the same chance to play the game to the best of their abilities as everyone else. Whether they are 70 or 19, male or female. And it shouldn't matter if they are cowpokes or garbage men or used car salesmen or political activists or models or lawyers or porn stars or eccentric wackos or ex-NFL players or ex-NFL players' wives, deaf, one-legged, rocket scientists, whatever. If for one person it means being a challenge hog, so be it. If for another person it means knowing how to survive in the wilderness and catch fish, so be it. If for another person it means being able to manipulate people into thinking your way so you can sell them your biography, your honesty and integrity schtick, the next edition of the world record book, your impending movie career as the next Steven Seagal, so be it. JT played the good ol' boy cowpoke angle to the hilt, and for rednecks everywhere he is deservedly a hero. Since when do college graduates become cowpokes? Gotta give him credit for playing that angle.

I agree -- Stephen took the totally wrong approach to his jury message, and unfortunately Brendan was the 1st juror up and mocked him for it. Even if Stephen pulled off a great speech, though, in the end it came down to that JT truly was the complete package --physical game, strategic game AND social game. (Not to mention a hard worker around camp.) Stephen only exceeded on 1 of those 3, and he had a pretty good but not great social game compared to JT. And S admits in his post finale interview that he and JT were equal strategic players and that a lot of people underestimated JT's mental game. So I really do think the best all-around player won.

I agree with you all about what JT did right and what Stephen did wrong, but nonetheless I was rooting for Stephen and would have voted for him. I like seeing a player with intellect win, and I was not excited about seeing another redneck win, even a good player.I very much preferred the original season of Survivor where the challenges didn't favor people who can run and jump and catch balls. (Even though I LOVED seeing Ozzy kill the swimming and diving challenges.) The kind of athleticism they reward has nothing to do with social dynamics or surviving in the wild; it just caters to viewers who like watching athletic competitions. JT won the last two challenges because he could move faster and had better hand eye coordination, and that's part of what makes him the "whole package" - but to me that stuff shouldn't be the factor that gives someone the chance to pick his opponent. 'S OK, I'm used to being thoroughly disappointed with the outcome of the game. I always look forward to the Finale, and I almost always feel a complete letdown afterwards. I can count a half dozen where I was happy with how the vote went, so about a third. I think they should make a rule with the Player of the Season vote that if the winner gets it, the player with next highest votes should get it, because I think the voters want to reward their favorite player IF he or she doesn't win. It should be the best or most loved player who didn't win, but not knowing who is going to win going in to the F4, we end up with JT getting an extra 100K. Not that the two runners-up in this case would have been on my list.

BR, yes, I feel that way too. JT just did not have a lot of character depth for me, that was shown. He may have more to him, but it wasn't presented. He didn't have Colby's knack for tossing out memorable lines.I agree that Jeff's comments made me all too aware of JT from the get-go. Once Brendan was gone I was pretty sure JT would win. I voted for Stephen because I wanted him to win, but said I thought the reality would be JT. The 7-0 was a shocker for me, is all. Squid, thanks for that link. Very good interview and it does make me feel better knowing that Stephen knew he was a goner before he ever got to the jury. Interesting to hear the TC lasts about five hours, compressed into less than 30 minutes of air time. No wonder the F2 seem beaten down at the end. Sounds like Stephen took a lot of attitude at the end, while the JT love was filling the room. Now I understand why Coach said he felt bad for Stephen and said he would have liked for Stephen to win. I don't think Stephen was exaggerating when he says the last challenge was tailor made for JT. As soon as I saw what it was I felt that. The spider too. I prefer the will power challenges at the end. That was a lame challenge. For non-endurance finals, the Great Wall challenge in China was impressive, and so was the Vanuatu one. I don't what they were thinking; that was not good TV.
