"Ep 9 Unofficial Precap: Boldly Going where Capt. Cook Nearly Landed in the UMU"
An unauthorized preview of the reward trip to Atiu, aka
Four Flew Over the Kopeka's Nest

Bye-bye Aitutaki, the Fearsome Four reign victorious!
At any rate, they kicked Raro's puzzled bickering ass
Off to Atiu they go! And so do we ...

On our left ...
this dreamy vision is the first sign you're really not in Kansas any more, Jeff
(well that and meeting people of other ethnicities)

Manuae Reserve, the first Cook island seen by James Cook;
he stopped by with his Tahitian interpreter and chatted the natives up in 1777

After a whole lot of empty ocean,
we spot Takutea "My White Squirrel-Fish" Reserve,
where Capt. Cook stopped to gather provender on his own visit to Atiu.
Seems everyone who comes here wants to eat!

We're landing WHERE? YIKES!

The natives look friendly enough ...
but why isn't that greeter holding up a Welcome Survivors sign?
Are the natives feeling peckish for new meat?

Now it's time for the blindfolds. As we're visiting an extremely primitive island
inhabited by FEARSOME (former) CANNIBALS,
it wouldn't do for you to see the tennis courts and giant rugby field or the numerous churches

We're on the road to reward ... and it's bumpy

But FIRST ...
(hang on, who invited Julie Chen?)
A surprise sidetrip to Raka's burial cave!
(Or not. This MAY come later. But let's peek anyway.)

Don't bump your heads!
Right, we're blindfolded, remember?

SCREAMS!!!
This is our reward? WTF? It's pre-consumed!!!

may we tempt you with a nice thighbone?
It's well aged and low in fat ...

the regulars leave their empties with the dead
Yes those are human bones ... Raka's ancestors
Will he tell a story of the cave? There's not much time!

You can drink the water but you can't eat this crab, man, he's toxic!
Before you go, "worship" the chief god of the Cooks

now that's a Tanga!!!

back in the bus, y'all ...
now out! Blindfolds off!

here we are at the lil beach shack in the forest above the beach
waah! no feast!

Now the tumunu leader/island chief brings on the official greeting
He will stick around to perform the ritual of the bush beer.

Will Jeffie tell us a story? If he did, it might go like THIS:
"Bush beer brewing and drinking clubs (bootlegging!) came to be after the missionaries took over and banned the
KAVA CEREMONY.

It used to be made with oranges. It still has orange flavor ...
visitors should bring a bag of sugar for the next batch
CASH which is now a substitute for sugar, gladly accepted.

(Note: four of these "primitive natives" fail the Survivor native dress code test
but no worries, before allowing them to appear on TV
the SEG team has instructed them to remove all watches, jewelry, shoes
any signs that they live in a 21st century world
Much more authentic. They will look like this:

now it's time to get in the paikea (sedan chairs)

photocredit - chinagazer

back in the old days, royalty were carried when they traveled, because any ground they stepped on became
TABU
which made for a shortage of usable real estate

The Fearsome 4 Victors are carried down a short slope to the beach
Natives are VERY RELIEVED that Nate, Adam, and Jonathan didn't win

Will we see hot dancing and hip-grinding? Hope so!

Jiffy told them they would take part in an umu!
Let's hope not, because an UMU is an earth oven, Jeff!
that's where the Atiuans cook their pig (or longpig)
Let's hope there's already a pig in that umu

Whew! Princess Becky cries with relief.
Roast pig, taro, purple yams, papaya, coconut (again?) and all the island has to offer
awaits in their beachfront shack

Harvested that morning by Atiu's protector of the kopeka boobie!
Even Ozzy could learn a thing or two from this guy

photo of Birdman George courtesy of chinagazer

Plates of plaited coconut frond ... no dishwashing!
What a beautiful beach for a picnic ... Taungaroro!

Dare ya to say Taungaroro 10 times after 10 cups of bush beer!

Producers:
(we have a problem Houston, the boys aren't drinking enough)
Ozzy, you were quick to pig out --literally!
Now you're too full to drink?
YUL! You need to try this home brew!
Getting you guys drunk--that's the point of the big budget this episode!
We want silly stupored puking drunk footage!"

You go Sundra! You go Becky! Bush beer will grow some more hair on those pits for ya!
Now feel free to frolic in the sea my beauties ... run barefoot and free!

Ow, that makatea sure is sharp!!!
Sundra, you cut yourself?
Peeing on it is the island remedy, you know.
(but you won't see that at home this year)

The more bush beer we drink

the more that rock looks like an angry spirit of the island ...
(oh wait, that's a different TV show!)

Sadly, all good things must come to an end
and soon, because this ep has TWO challenges
Adam/Candice lovey-dovey crap
and a DOUBLE BOOT

blindfolded and blind drunk they're whisked away ... the local goats stare

and ask each other, which is the F2 goat?

Just down the road lies Cook's Landing, Oravaru.
They could have had the feast there, for the sake of getting SOME history right ... nah!

That's right, Cook never went to Aitutaki but he did drop by Atiu
at least his men came on shore
but when the Atiuans fired up the umu
the sailors headed back for the ship ...
the Atiuans said they wouldn't think of eating LONGPIG!

yeah, and if you believe that you might trust Jonathan!

and now back we fly to our little but mighty camp ...
did we really get drunk way down there?

It's all a haze. Are those clouds or my poor fuzzy brain cells?
Wow, I hope the IC is swimming so Ozzy can win it for us!

Oh man, we're back to that dumpy little motu in the corner of the lagoon.
They sure put our tribe in the barrio on Day One.
No wonder all the white players split, man!

Back on ATIU ...

The chairs of victory dismantled and cast in the shrubbery
the lil beach shack washed away the next day and only a few logs remain!

Call it a sacrifice the island demanded to lay to rest "the curse of Billy"
Aitu is FREE at last!

and that's the story I was told by

a little birdie of Atiu!

21 days, 9 flights, excessive VISA abuse, 1 trip to Atiu, priceless

Ah now I get it!
(never saw it, so didn't forget it, thanks vince3!)

no, unlike Paulie, the bird in question is a native and doesn't get out much. You have to go to its own habitat to ask any questions.

Nope: wrong across the board. Paulie was/is a poster over at the FORT who used to write summaries of the episodes before they were aired: precaps. Stuff happened in those precaps. Strange, strange stuff. I miss it a lot.

Well worth seeking out if you have a few days to browse their archives. Just don't expect to surface for at least three hours.

I'd like to think that in an imaginary world, he restarted for S:SI. I'd like to think that, but I'm not that delusional.

LOL
Thanks everyone!
They cut out the cave, I guess they went for the feel good footage of Yul being mauled in a good way (well, it was good for her).

Interesting they also cut out the bush beer ceremony. But then they did the kava ceremony in Vanuatu, and it's similar, only the bush beer doesn't turn your lips numb like kava. It is served in tiny little cups rather than big kava bowls.

Did you notice, they DID use the coconut frond plates just like in the picture?

And they let a live pig join in, that was funny.

It was also cool to finally see the shack on the beach that got washed away. I notice they didn't carry the victors down to the beach. Maybe because it's a tad steep.

my little bird's a King Fisher, found a labeled pic of it

forgot to include a map showing where they went --
from Aitutaki to Atiu.

In the cave pool jumping preview, that is Mitiaro which you can see next to Atiu.

The airstrip on the northern end of Atiu where they landed is very near Raka's burial cave, first stop. The feast was way over on the central west coast -- not within walking distance. They must have at some point taken them out of the vehicle and pointed them down the road on foot, so they could be met by the chief. I doubt the Atiuans carried them very far!

"...my little bird's a King Fisher,..."

Cool, I get a shout out, and I didn't have pay anyone this time. Thanks!

And my little buddy -

- is going to consult with your crab for some toxicity lessons. It seems the Cook Island Survivor crab consumption is outpacing the crab spawning rate (and not for want of effort, heh heh) and they could use a consultant.

Very nice pre-quel picto-story. Those Islands look like they might shrink considerably during high tide, though. Afraid I'm going to have to steal the crab pict. I'll leave it to others (You know who you are!! fp) to preserve the Tanga for appropriate future use.

lmao Kingfisher ...
Most crabs in the Cooks are edible and the coconut crab if more than edible it's incredibly delicious! (points to anyone who can guess why it's called a coconut crab)

if my toxic buddy can help your buddy ... cool
but no stealing ... we photographer DAWS like our photo credits!
