survivor_21 506 desperate attention whore postings DAW Level: "Reality Show Commentator" 08-17-06, 04:07 PM (EST) "Tribal Divisions" Hi guys, I know that you probably have read this on other sites by now, and maybe it is somewhere here but I didn't see it. What am I taking about you ask? Well its the seemingly controversial speculated tribal divisions based on race, yes I know, race, caucasian vs african-american vs hispanic vs asian-american (If I have misrepresented any ethnic group Im sorry, not my intent) Here is a link to the post on TDT: http://truedorktimes.com/survivor_cook_islands/spoilers/index.htm I'm still not sure if I think this is going to far, meaning that I havn't made up my mind yet one way or the other. It does seem pretty low, but I guess for me it will depend on how they present/edit it. anyway, I figured that this would be worth discussing here, so lets see what people think. BTW I have no idea if this is true or not, I just read it on TDT and thought we could discuss it.   Top

Seems that all the seasoned spoilers (Wezzie, Dan, TDT, etc.) have all heard the same rumors. I'm not so sure I belong to the group that sees this split as inflammatory. It truly is no more "offensive" then grouping the castawys by age or gender. (As can be evidenced by Cirie's distraughtness over being labeled as an older woman.) Personally, I'm excited to see so many "minorities" represented this season. Now as too the comments being made about advantages/disadvantages of splitting the tribes by race. If Exile Island is any indication (having 1 from each of the four initial tribes represented in the F4) I'd have to say it won't effect anything. People will target the strong ones/the outsiders/the weak ones/etc. regardless of race. Or at least that's my hope. Then again, the cast "revealed" so far indicates that at least 6 of the new castaways are white, so who knows if the race-divided tribes will actually pan out.   Top

"RE: Tribal Divisions" Didn't TDT pull out from their site most of the 'spoiled' Caucasian contestants? I think they have only 6 contestants listed: three Asians, one Hispanic, and two Caucasians. But I agree with you in your assessment, Tribe. I hardly think that the show should be called rascist just because (if) they do split the contestants by race. In the end, they will proclaim only one winner: an individual, and not a race. If any 'rascist' elements come into play (voting off a person because he/she is not part of the White/Black/Yellow/Brown tribe, for example), I will probably blame it on alliances and not racism, unless it was directly shown that rascism was indeed the reason for voting this person out.   Top

Its no different than dividing the tribes up by gender or age or shoe size, and its probably only for the first episode, like last season, anyway.   Top

He gave the impression that they looked for diversity in the casting and then after they had assembled the cast they got the bright idea to divide the tribes by race. "RE: Tribal Divisions" I think it should be called "Survivor -- Separate but Equal" Not a good idea, as. let's say the Caucasions win a reward challenge -- they get to eat while the other races don't. Just will make a lot of viewers uncomfortable if that happens. But I agree that, like last season, it is probably a one episode or only a couple of episodes stunt before the real tribes are formed.   Top

"RE: Tribal Divisions" Hi everyone - I'm very excited for the new season of Survivor. So the new thing this season is tribal divisions by race. Its a curious way to divide up the tribes, that's for sure. I'm not offended by this at all, although i'm sure a lot of viewers, and possibly players, will be. Looking back, dividing by age made sense due to the differences in endurance, physical fitness, etc. Dividing by gender also makes sense along the same lines. But the one thing I'm curious about is why divide by race? I can't think of a reason that would relate to the game, other than the social aspect...but how would it help or hinder the players?? Possibly those who ARE offended would be exposed to those who are not? This is all i can come up with. This one has me puzzled, Mr. Burnett. geekboy   Top

"RE: Tribal Divisions" I read somewhere that "people"..(who ever they may be...) complained that the show was NOT ethnically diverse enough...well this is the producers answer. I am not offended but I can see where some might be. This show has always been a social experiment...this takes it to a new level. It also will not be long before 4 tribes go to 3 then 2 then 1. "RE: Tribal Divisions" TDT has a People Magazine article about the cast and the twist -- this caught my eye: Until the tribes merge later in the season, the four teams will battle each other and, perhaps, racial stereotypes. Not sure if this is just the writer speaking in a generalization or if it means they intend to keep everyone separated until the official merge. I think after the tribes get mixed up I think MB's point is going to be how they can all work together. I think it also is a good Cook reference because in his journals he goes into great length about the differences between the different island's inhabitants; skin, hair type, etc.   Top

This isn't an experiment, it’s a set-up. the show is biased and I do not plan on watching it. In both cases the obviously younger and physically stronger team got obliterated by the older team who seemed to be less athletic. In Thailand -- a land broker, a firefighter, an executive recruiter, a dental student and a cop (several of these people were very buff and athletic) got blown away by a porn star, an idiot restauranteur, a crazy bat-befriending teacher, and an over-the-hill football player. "RE: Tribal Divisions" Knowing MB he has probably carefully picked specific personality types and mixed them across races so that there will be heroes and villians on each of the four tribes. While I am not sufficiently offended that I won't watch, the idea of racial division on a reality show does concern me. Another poster called it separate but equal which is exactly what it appears to be. I expect (and hope) that these tribes will merge quickly like they did with the four tribes last season. PS: Probst is a fool if he thinks anyone is going to buy that line about this being a way to include more minorities.   Top

I don't think they will keep them this way for long, just long enough for people to get to know each other a little for possible future alliances we might not see coming... it has yet to work, but who knows...   Top
