"Speed vs safety?"
What amazes me with this race is that teams are still willing to go for the longer challenge vs a speedier one. Its a race people!!!

After all the incidents of 'searching for something' and having at least one team take a long time, I wouldn't even think about doing it if there was an option, especially like a fun option of white water sledging.

The twins are an exception because although their reason was silly, "do not want to go into cold water right now?" the only way they could have beaten CHip and Kim was to beat them to the river by car and go first. (but i do not think they even contemplated this, dah!) Had they found the clue quickly, they may have had a chance.Obvioulsy they were a lot slower in the mud pool but the camera tried to make it look closer.

Absolutley. I doubt we could find a single time when a "hunt for something" task was easy. Just about every team that took that choice ended up much farther behind. And to be sure, the racers must realize that while the producers will have "scary" challenges, nobody has been injured (certainly not enough to cause them to drop from the race) as a direct result of a challenge. Just look at all the safety equipment teams are provided with. Sure, teams have had injuries through the course of the race (as we saw in ep. 1 this series!), but to take an obviously much slower challenge at this point in the race is foolhardy indeed.
