Just to see what would happen, I worked out the cost of an equivalent-distance NYC cab ride and got $410.00. Before adding any tolls and the tip. A hundred dollars for a hundred miles isn't nightmarish by US standards. It may have been marked up a bit because of the Race, but it was within the leg budget and wasn't an unreasonable cost. I do think Chip's generosity would have been better served by mailing the driver a tip from home, though.   Top

For a taxi at those rates, you're right, it's way under. but i'd say this was more comparable to an airport shuttle, where you're not going to pay the same fare as a NYC cab - something in between a cab and a bus. still, i agree $100 was not unreasonable (neither was it low), and i don't think the racers (read: COLIN) took into account the distance and the like (such as how likely were the prospects of finding another cabbie, not roped in by CBS, willing to travel 100 miles, in the middle of the night, in a third world country?) Of course, this is completely off topic from the post, and yeah, I don't think chip needed to be tipping the cabbie. What surprised me is that Chip could have given the 2nd cabbie something to offset the differnce rather than a hug (cause you give a man a hug, he's warm for a day, but you teach a man...nevermind) but didn't. Who tips a cab driver anyway? And who expects them to make change?   Top

Yes, I agree, and that was what caused him to short pay the other cab driver. For some reason he thinks this is OK for his karma, but I doubt the second cab driver would agree! Chip's apparently selective on who he spreads his karma to. I don't take cabs very often, but it costs me $35 to go to the airport (about 10-15 miles, but I live in the SF Bay where everything is $$$$!!). And it seemed like $100 was the going rate and all the teams were charged the same. This, I don't have a problem with. The bus driver last week charging K/K and B/N $200 and then charging them for gas when they ran out....that I have a problem with!   Top

Last week - four couples jumped on buses loaded and paid the going rate. BN and KK got on an empty bus. Buses there don't leave until they are full - there's no schedule. So, they wanted to leave immediately and ended up renting the whole bus. They made a mistake and then paid for it by being "coerced" into staying on the bus and then being shaken down for more money with the gas scam.
