"Next season twists"
We’ve seen men vs. women, ad hoc tribe selection, pre-selected tribes, three tribes, re-appearing tribe mates, and other twists.

What other twists could be introduced in order to shake up the game playing and alliance forming in future Survivors?

What I would like to see is an all female nude Stripper/porn star/playboy bunny (hetro… OK, Bi) Survivor, but regretfully (And probably fortunately for the overall success of the show) that’s not going to happen sooooo……….

So second to any of that, I’d like to see MB try a tribal selection process with pure luck of the draw tribe selection initially, with two or three tribes. Then tribes randomly remixed each week for a number of episodes. Or, have men vs. women for one week, followed by weekly random tribal remixes. I’m thinking do this for, say four episodes, then have the tribes (two) set for the next three episodes, then merge the maggots (salute to Sarge). I’d like to see this because we need a different dynamic for the alliance forming, and for variety. It’s getting pretty predictable that in the first two episodes major alliances form that carry some to the merge and beyond, and I think by randomly mixing t he tribes for the first few episodes, Nash theory either goes out the window (for a while) or is at least scrambled a bit, boring pagonging might be minimized, and lots of back stabbing, two faced promising, and other good stuff might be encouraged..

This isn’t exactly this season spoiling, but it could be considered nest season speculation. And it might be an interesting topic to wile some time away that otherwise could be spent in a productive fashion.

Listen up MB, there could be some good suggestions here. We Survivor dead heads, er, die hards (yeah, that’s the ticket) can help you keep this thing going.

1. "RE: Next season twists"
I would like to see a competition to split the teams.
For example, start with 16 people being dropped off. They have to race to a village. The first 3 form tribe A, 4th-6th form tribe B and 7th-9th from tribe C. These 9 are immune.Remaining 7 are up for eviction. They live as 1 tribe for 2 days to get aquainted and wheel & deal. They go to tribal council and vote off 1 person. Each team then has a playground draft to fill out the tribe. Then compete as 3 tribe like #####.

3. "my two cents"
I think that they should come back with 18 players again, but this time start the game with no teams - instead have all of them live together and have individual challanges for a couple of episodes then draw to divide them into teams. This will create a nice mix of smaller alliances before they even get to their teams.

What do you people think?

8. "RE: my two cents"
I was thinking something like this too, kind of like they did in Thailand when Shi Ann got tricked - only right from the beginning. Two tribes with two camps right next to each other. Think of the tension!

I also like the individual immunity as well as tribal immunity idea, as someone else mentioned, but the individual immunity would have to be totally random - even Jiffy just drawing a name from a hat. Then it would be a real wild-card, and the strong people wouldn't necessarily be targets right from the start.

They could even have the losing tribe assign the individual immunity to the winning tribe. That could get interresting.

I would like to see a 2 part immunity - maybe everytime or just here and there.

First compete for TI and then the losing tribe competes for II. Would shake things up a bit.

5. "RE: Next season twists"
Thank you, King!

Reshuffling the tribes on a regular basis has been something I've looked for for a while now. I have thought that it would really make the Survivors work their game if they couldn't get complacent with their alliances so early on. I think that after each Tribal Council the tribes should be shuffled in a random manner so that every few days the tribes are re-formed.

This would do two things (At least. I'm thinking on the fly now and my fingers can't keep up with my brain). First, the players would have to work hard to get to know EVERYONE at least a little bit and learn to co-exist with them. And second, the players would have to be nice (at least on the surface) to everyone because they would never know who they would be living with next.

9. "RE: Next season twists"
All great suggestions! MB, you really should be listening!

I like the idea of frequently mixing of tribes.

I also like the idea of individual immunity for the first few episodes. This way some of the physically stronger Survivors might last a little longer to form alliances.

But my ideal Season would consist of Survivors of the same ilk and demographics. ie:

1. 18 older executive, lesbian hippies out playing each other.

2. Or, 18 whining, young, ultra-thin, ultra sensitive gals with huge eyes outwitting each other.

3. Or, 18 hard-nosed, hard-working 40ish blue collar women out lasting each other.

4. Or, 18 slightly overweight 30ish guys with ponytails sticking it to each other. LOL

5. Or, my ultimate season would consist of 18 Rupert's! If Rupert types weren't available than I'll have to ask for 18 semi-nude celebrities!

I know MB tries to get a diverse crowd to insight some drama but I feel there would be abundant drama with people of the same demographic. You couldn't guess that "The older one" will be next to go, or the "The one most physically fit, the biggest challenge threat", will be next to go, or as you had on this season, "The guy" will be the next to go.

You wouldn't have predictable boots at the beginning because they would ALL be older, or ALL traithletes, or ALL women, or ALL hardworking, hardliving individuals, etc. Race and sex wouldn't matter if you had contestants of similar demographics and background. In fact, you might actually find greater character developement because the audience can't neccessarily root for there own demographic type if it's not featured.

What do you think?

10. "RE: Next season twists"
All of those would be good. Most of those ideas (even the celebrity idea, cause of the egos there) would serve the purpose which would be to change the game dynamic and stratergery (thanks GWB) so that alliance forming would be less predictable, more spontaneous.

After so many Survivor Seasons, everyone knows how to play, and even the better tactics to employ, and avoid. Anyone slated to be on the show can (and should) get DVD os past shows, Spoiler board archives, there are probably books, and analyze the show. I like the idea of those guys hitting the beach without a clue and having to think on their feet.

Nice things happen, Rupert steals shoes, the first Rupert survivor had them just jumping into the ocean, no prep. One guy, I forgot his name, was wearing an expensive suit. They had some nice twists then to, three teams, reappearing tribe mates, I didn't like that one too much, but it did foul up the voting blocs, and for that I did like it.

I think the best way to keep them of balabce would be to shuffle teams between every TC, at least for a few episodes.

OR, Separate them into 18 or so one person camps, and havng regulated and rotating interactions dictated by chance, MB planning, challenges, fake kidnappings, panty raids, or something.

90. "RE: Next season twists"
The thing is that this upcoming survivor is not as diverse as America likes. The average millions that watch survivor do not watch to just see the models. This go round there are 4 or 5 models and more interestingly 3-4 lawyers. Maybe those are the ones that can afford to take off 7 weeks and the models are actually usually aspiring models that are starving, but the problem is both groups are also there for exposure, exposure, exposure. After a while, that gets old. I am also guessing that if the rumor is true that someone quit in the "Osten" fashion, it is one of these people. The lawyers are getting advertising and the models exposure. What would be truly refreshing is if the contestants were ALL THERE to play the game. We have not seen that in a while. While S9 was truly a good game with some very, very priceless situations, they keep getting those characters on there that do not realize why they are there. But a truly cool show would be if the picked 32 people and paired them up randomly and you played as unaquainted pairs or take 10 newbies and 10 previous survivors and divide each in half and play two tribes. Or have two tribes, but each tribe also has one member that will really be playing for the other team.

11. "20 players"
Since we now know there will be 20 players, my first thought is this: Two teams of 10 will live at 2 separate camps and compete for individual immunity right from the start. Both teams will attend TC every 3 days until the teams are down to 8 or 7 players each. Then they will compete against each other as usual until a merge at 10.

It would be an interesting dynamic to *start* the game with individual immunity, and then maybe go to team immunity and then back to individual when the number of players are less.

How so? It might give *one* younger guy a chance to stay in the game longer by winning individual immunity, but if alliances are formed at 6-4 at the onset, there will still be 3 people without immunity.

I like the idea, but I think a dominant alliance can improvise for a few votes and still have the numbers when it becomes a team game.

npond: If the game started out with 10 on each team and there was individual immunity till the teams get down to 7 players on each side, that would mean if there are even numbers of older/middle aged vs. younger types, then chances are that the more fit, agrressive, physical ones could get their numbers up before the immunities became tribal....just thinking out loud, but I definately see how it would prevent a pure pagonging of the younger, more physically fit types right off the bat.

63. "RE: 20 players"
But what I'm saying is that a dominant alliance can still improvise and vote out whoever doesn't have immunity.

Let's take S9 as an example. I know your situation has 10 vs. 10 but this is just an example.

Fat 5
vs.
JP, JK, Brady, Brooke

Brooke wins first IC:

They just vote out JP instead.

Brady wins second IC:

They vote out Brook

etc...

Individual Immunity only helps one person per vote, it can't help a minority alliance as a whole, that's all I'm saying.

I do like the idea, in fact I think they should have a chance to win individual immunity before every vote, even if the team loses. This might avoid the whole "throwing the challenge to get rid of someone" syndrome.

I like this idea, too!

What does MB want? I think he wants the young, good-looking, strong types to go to the end. In the last few seasons, they have been picked off early and that trend may continue unless MB shakes things up. How can he guarantee they get further in the game? He offers individual immunity from the get go.

and I would like the individual immunity to happen as closely to TC as possible! That way the alliances would not have time to determine who to go with.

Even have the individual immunity happen at TC or leave the challenge beach and go immediately to TC.

Sorry, but I don't like it when TC follows immunity challenges too closely coz that will drastically cut short strategizing time, which is the part that makes Survivor fun. They'd have gone for easy targets like Chris in episode 1 and Scout, Eliza, and Twila in episode 2 coz there won't be time to discuss on other possible boots. Gotta give good players a chance to do some magic to see if they could save themselves and they need time to do that.

I could also see them not telling them there is another tribe. So when they get there they think there is only 10 players (maybe) and only one tribe only to find out that they do merge - who knows just a thought.

I like the idea of 4 tribes of 5. Four tribes would eliminate a large voting block. This would keep the voting blocks small and allow for 4 merges and many ways of mixing up things.

Doc

I said the same thing last nite... 4 teams of 5 and multiple TCS for losing 2 tribes...or maybe even 3 and then after 2 weeks or so-- at 14 they go to 2 tribes of 7 without keeping the tribes together...a complete new reshuffling.. like Marquesas and not All Stars when Poopert's tribe was dissolved into the two others.

We have to find out how many episodes there are!!! If they start in March bc of that stupid Martha Stewart wanna be show, and the finale is in third week of May (the Sunday after Mothers Day) there is likely going to have to be multiple boots.

From zapit, to make room for 10 weeks of that Martha Stewart wanna be show starting Jan. 6.

Actually though e, I heard Jiffy specifically state on the Survivor Reunion show that the next Survivor would be aired in February, as did Lisa Chen on the Early Show, the morning after. Lisa announced more than once that it would be in February.

Again, Mary Hart said it would be in February as well on Monday nights Entertainment Tonight. Heard it every time with my own two ears!

So which is it, February or March! Please let it be in February....

I heard that too FP from Julie Chen (I thought CBS--messed things up agai--either way)

I guess it depends if they bunch up the Martha Stewart wanna be show of 10 episodes into less than 10 weeks. That show starts airing 8 pm EST on Jan. 6th--10 weeks of Thursdays means S10 would start Thursday March 17th. But Feb. is sweeps month and Survivor is a proven ratings draw...so probably mid Feb.

I'd still like to know how may eps. there will be...this 20 survivors stuff is too much if there are no eps. with multiple boots.

I know somebody will come in with the exact words or quotes but I think that is what was hinted at. The 20 think they know what is going to happen but from the get go they don't!

I just don't want to see 2 tribes of Studs and Studettes voting off the older people at the start like has happened on all editions up to S9.

It isn't if you look pretty or are fit but it is also how you play the game.

I just can't stand the pagonging after a merge. I would like to see all the players at the merge have a good chance of making it to the end.

I say have no merge until the number left forces you to. Say the final four - you have 2 people in each tribe come together for the final four.

This was the second edition where more than a token older person made it to the final 9. That person was considered the father or mother figure for the young ones. Thailand was the first where more than one older person made it to the final. Older to me is 40 and older.

1. Richard (winner) Rudy (F3)
2. Tina (winner) Rodger (Jury)
3. Big Tom (F3)
4. Paschal (F4)
5. Jan (F3) and Clay (F2) Helen (F4) and Jake (Jury)
6 Butch (F4)
7. Lillian (F2) Rupert (Jury if you stretch the age since he was 39 at the time)

Thailand had the most older people than other seasons.

You're assuming that the tribes will reach two people at roughly the same time. What happens if one tribe has four or five left when the other is down to two? If you wait to merge until that point, there's more chance of a pagonging, it seems.

Ok...I have a thought ,..and that's rare.

They could keep evening up the teams (sorta like Apprentice) when it comes down to 5 on one side and 3 on the other..

Or... re-shuffle the teams after each (or a couple) tribal councils...this would keep alliances at bay and people would actually have to vote using their own brain instead of Ami's (ooops did I say that out loud? )

I wonder if the teams are picked in advance. Maybe they will arrive and be told to pick teams. The 2 last players to be picked are told they are out. That would shock everyone. And it would be a quick way to get rid of 2 extra players.

Or they could have a challenge/race and the last person on each team to arrive is eliminated, and the team that finishs last has to go to tribal. Eliminating 3 contestants in one episode. It will definately be worth looking at the total number of episodes if that information becomes available.

Although it seems that every rule has changed in Survivor since Borneo, the only constant is that people are only eliminated by being voted out. I realize that some have quit, been sexually harassed, had eerie family premonitions of death, or fell in fires, but these instances supercede Survivor Rules. Being voted out is what Survivor is all about, and I think this is the one rule that Mark Burnett will not touch.

I don't think the players would be silly enough to believe that there is only one tribe of 10 from the start. Perhaps there is a tribe of 14-16 and another tribe of 4-6, living separately. This could work by, say, all 20 having a race as soon as they get there, top 6 all become an immune tribe, next 13 (maybe) become another tribe and last person eliminated. Then the 13 competes for individual immunity every week, the 6 person tribe gets to come and watch. Then when there is 6 in the big tribe, they merge with the original 6 immune tribe people. So it's 6 on 6 in a 12 person merge. This would shake things up because I think the original 6 would be sick of each other by then and want to make new alliances. Imagine if Twila and Eliza had been stuck like that for 20-odd days.
But if it's two tribes of 10 competing for individual immunity each week for a while, they are obviously going to know there's another tribe out there. They just won't know who the people are that's on it.

Yes, but being young,in great shape as far as physique goes and being good-looking does not equal physical strength, agility and puzzle-solving ability. Or help you retain historical survivor info either. Part of Survivor is alliances, an even bigger part of Survivor is strategy and outwitting the other players. Over half the players that have won have not been the "idea" physical kind. Richard Hatch overweight and overbearing, but the best of the best players. Tina Wesson-Primadonna housewife, Survivor Marqueses-Vecepia, Vecepia who? and one of the other two of the final 3 was a 42yo real estate agent. Bryan-used car dealer/porno star. Imagine all the degrees he beat. Jenna M. deserved to win not because of all her clever survivor skills but because Rob C and Matthew were being driven by their dumbstick. If they let that drive them she did deserve to win.
Sondra flew under the radar, but she deserved to win because she was able to get by with a few things that changed the course of the game, undetected. Amber-hmmmmmmmmmm...............Rob should have made that completely his game. But for the most part none of the most highly educated or the hottest normally win the game. And they are not usually final 2. Kelly, Colby,
Kim,Neely(young,pretty, kind of airheaded),Clay.....yuck..........Matthew,Lil....please..........
Boston Rob.he deserved it and so did Twila. The pagonging happens because the younger set sometimes believe they are smarter and have better strategy, only they seem to be missing the strategy part alot of times.

33. "RE: Let the jury alone vote a cast member out one week"
From the promos, it seems that MB has the same basic thoughts we have, that the show has become predictable, even with the twists presented thus far (although some have affected game strategy). They announced 20 players for next season, and "..twists that will change the game so that the players don't know what is going on..." (or something to that effect).

So even though MB has to have devised the twists for the next game, at least we get to be the validators.

Addressing the Cannibalism idea (thanks, Ginger). Cool. Survivor lends it self to this. Starve the survivors for a week or two, till even the squemish are hungry enough to put scruples aside. Gross food challenge can be fresh organs, eyes, entrails. Challenges can be human hunts, or for real tribal war games. If someone breaks their word, they get the axe. Literally. Make it legal to do in someone who P####'s you off.

Tribal TC won't just be eviction, it will be evisceration, an offering to the local gods, followed by brunch.

Swimming challenges become a little more exciting, I.e. drop the survivors a few miles out to sea, see who really swim. Throw in sharks, other sea creatures. Frogmen.

Outside national (any nation) territorial waters, no law?

One thing, please withdraw my application, I think I'd rather be on the couch for that one.

Seriously, there are some great ideas, 4 teams stands out, I like the secret team idea even if the promos indicate it won't be this year. And mixing up the tribes much more than they do now.

Finally, ala Big Brother, an idea would be to have tribes of identical twins, spilt all pairs, and mix them up with some sort of side reward (either non-challenge or a running challenge that spans several episodes) for fooling other tribesmen. I'd like to see the alliance strategy they would use if they can't even be sure who they are talking to at any given time.

FOr that matter, incorporation of any kind of challenge(s) that span several episodes would be a great audience hook.

MB, these ideas are free! We Want to help. And I could use a weekend job in Survivor Editing. I'd have to bring along my Buddy VS and some others for the heavy lifting, but you'd get your money's worth.

34. "Idea based on Palau culture/tradition"
Found this floating around out there...

Palau's social organization is highly complex and competitive. The race for money, prestige and power, the main thrust of which used to be for political power within a clan or village, was the focus from which most events occurred, such as sports competitions and wars.

Palauan villages were, and still are, organized around 10 clans reckoned matrilineally. A council of chiefs from the 10 ranking clans governed the village, and a parallel council of their female counterparts held a significant advisory role in the control and division of land and money.

Men and women had strictly defined roles to play in the continuity of the village. The sea was the domain of men who braved its fury to harvest the fish necessary to sustain the village and wage battle. Inter-village wars were common, so men spent a lot of time in the men's meeting houses mastering techniques of canoe building and refining their skills with weapons. Women, on the other hand, held sway in the home. They cultivated vegetables and harvested shellfish and sea cucumbers from the shallow reefs.

I wonder if maybe we'll see some sort of pairing up of men/women to form 10 "clans" and then splitting the pairs by making 2 tribes (men on one, women on the other).

This would be very interesting in that each person would have much more at stake in what went on in the other tribe...would definitely make for a totally different way of strategizing and would certainly cause the castaways to think that everything they knew about survivor went out the window. It would probably be too hard to actually do, but we've seen them (as time has gone on) use more and more of the location's history/culture within the game...

41. "I dunno"
hehehe. Just thought the fact that it's 20 castaways coupled with this 10 clan bit was interesting.

I don't think the viewers would be too receptive to the idea of having little to no hand in their own boot (if both were booted when one was voted out)...but I haven't yet come up with an idea about how else these "clans" would work or be impacted by the other person's existence...

I just thought the 10 clan idea was a possibility - have no idea what MB would or wouldn't do with it. Maybe there's a team immunity then an individual immunity once team immunity is decided. Maybe then (using your example) Joseph gets voted out and then as punishment, Mary is not allowed to compete for individual immunity if her team gets it the following week (kinda like the opposite of the whole PM thing in Apprentice?). Your guess is as good as mine!

My sons theory on 'new twist' is one tribe with II until down to 16 people. Then two tribes of eight from there.

I thought this was interesting because it would allow for several days for all tribe members to commune and attempt alliances before breaking out into teams.

With 20 people next season there will even be more people who wont be remembered after their 15 minutes of fame are over. Personally the thing I enjoy the most is trying to figure out the relationships between the contestants and how their individual personalities interact with the others both individually as well as tribal. The more contestants there are the less time there is to develop these relationships. Hopefully there will be more early boots so we can get a feel for the individuals early on.RedBeard

Jeff said something about a significant game change in the first 10 minutes. I'm wondering if there isn't some kind of instant elimination of 2 players before they even get to camp.

Not that I would be in favor of such a twist, but the combination of 20 Survivors, a compressed time frame that makes more than 14 episodes an impossibility (if S10 gets pushed to March and doesn't run past May sweeps), and this "first 10 minutes" comment makes me think that there will be some serious elimination in the first few episodes if there isn't some form of immediate elimination.

79. "RE: Next season twists"
If the two 10-person tribe thing doesn't happen, I think this is the most likely. There's a show called Endurance (kids version of Survivor) in which they start out with I think 20 kids and have a challenge right off the bat to determine the 14 kids who will be staying to compete. It's some sort of endurance challenge and the first three gals and guys who "give up" are eliminated. So perhaps MB has planned for an immediate exit of four people in some sort of Palaun-based challenge. There are probably not a whole lot of feasible changes that would make the survivors think that everything they thought they knew about survivor was out the window...some sort of immediate ouster or something that would have a complete impact on the entire game (the way the tribes are set up seems most likely)...I'm still trying to figure out a way for the 10-person tribe with a pairing on the other tribe to work, but this idea makes a lot of sense.

I can't say I am too excited about 20 survivors. It was hard enough to get 18 people straight this time (of course we already knew the All-Stars). I would like to see at least two people voted off each of the first 2-3 episodes. The idea of 4 tribes of 5 is an excellent one...particularly if one tribe is completely eliminated the first week! I also like the idea of mixing the tribes every so often. If the game is going to completely change within the first 10 minutes, MB better stick to his word and really do it. I am tired of predictable twists like two people getting voted off for one week (make it two every week and that would be a twist).

LAST EDITED ON 12-13-04 AT 04:32 PM (EST)

I would not like any twist that eliminated a tribe just for losing a challenge...I like the voting off of players..it's integral to the game.

I like the idea of 2 or 3 TCS a week initially, and I was thinking to mix things up even more...reshuffling of the tribes every week at the beginning...no time/ability to make long term alliances and then bam merge at 10...

How bout this?:

First episode you have 4 teams of 5

Ep 1: 3 Survivors voted off, down to 17

Team 1 wins the first week IC, and teams 2, 3, 4 each vote off a player then it's 17.

At the beginning of ep. 2 you reshuffle and split into 4 teams with one team getting an extra member (draw nos. Nos. 1-16 pick buffs out of hat and no. 17 gets to pull out of another hat with one buff of each color so it is random which team gets an extra player and who that player is)

Then New Team 1 and 2 come in 1st and 2nd place in IC and Teams 3, 4 each go to TC.. Then there's 15

Ep. 2: 2 Survivors voted off, down to 15

At beginning of Ep. 3 the 15 remaining are split randomly into 3 teams of 5.

Team 1 wins and teams 2 & 3 go to TC and each vote out a player

Ep. 3: 2 Survivors voted off, down to 13

Then in EP. 4 its 13 and the same as with 17 except there's 2 teams of 4 and 1 team of 5

Then whammo, in Ep. 4 surprise em all and NO Tribal IC at all like when Mia and JP were voted out and just have 3 Ind. Imm winners. Each of the three teams votes out a member

Ep. 4: 3 Survivors voted off, down to 10

THen in Ep. 5 to 10 and you merge...or you don't Then one person voted off each week until Final 4

Ep 5-11th person voted out, 9 remaining
Ep.6-12th person voted out, 8 remaining
Ep.7-13th person voted out, 7 remaining
Ep.8-14th person voted out, 6 remaining
Ep.9-15th person voted out, 5 remaining
Ep.10-16th person voted out, 4 remaining
Ep. 11--Final 4 Finale

So you could possibly be on the same team, etc. but not likely all through all the switches.. This will probably lead to the more of the stronger players (ala Colby/Brady etc.) surviving.

Problems with this are that you never know the make up of teams, some could be too dominating, too smart, etc. but they could alter the ICs to make it more even.... like they do now anyway.

I should send this off to EPMB....

Their could be more episodes to fill, but how many can there be if you start in March and want to be done by say May 22th? See my post 49 above...

Jan 6 starts a 10 week Martha Stewart wanna be show. That means a March 17th Survivor start...11 episodes takes you to Sunday May 22, 2005 as last show...don't want to go any further than that, because 5-29 is Memorial day Sunday. SO it will have to be a short season unless they are having more than one ep. per week....

Very good Emy. You SHOULD send that idea off to MB. Seriously. I guess you'd have to get the name of his production company from the survivor credits or find a web site or something. And if there are going to be twenty people, they just might be following that elimination plan.

Hope they incorporate the tribal shuffling aspect too.

Offer them the idea if they let you be on the show. Odds are not good that they would accept (they probably will claim that they thought of it first, because they proably did) but it would be a twist of sorts if they did, and good publicity. And who knows. There would be a lot of us who would get a real (if vicarious) thrill if it worked.

perhaps no tribes at all. one tribe right from the beginning. I think somebody else mentioned this, but I think they would still have a jury of only seven. Otherwise, with a cast of twenty people, nobody would recognise half the people on the jury.

My idea is in two parts:

1) There are two tribes of 10 each, but everyone lives at the same camp, so everyone gets to know everyone.

2) This will make things easier for my big idea: the tribe that wins immunity gets to vote off a member from the losing tribe. As well, whenever a tribe has more members, the smaller tribe picks who sits out in the challenges.

This whole "destroy the other tribe" idea would go well with the war theme I think they'll be using.

I'm thinking along the same lines as you Tejayes.

The first major problem burnett faced was pagonging, and he solved it by introducing the switcheroo.

Now, the problem is players are playing an individual game from the start, and are voting off the strong players. How to solve this? Smaller tribes, so that you can't afford to lose your strong players, or any players for that matter.

So I say, four tribes of five. And to help with pagonging? They live in the same camp from day one.

I like your idea of an opposing tribe getting to vote off someone from the losing tribe. I had a similar idea, mentioned way back in the thread, that maybe the winning tribe could assign an individual immunity to someone on the losing tribe.

Sort of like what they did this season when Ami was assigned immunity, only, it would be a tribe decision, and it would be immediatly after the challenge, with very little time to choose. It would just be a wildcard that could help shake things up.

I mentioned the 4 tribes of 5 as well. I don't know if living on the same island will work though. How do you see the end game playing out?

The reason I ask is because if they are living on the same island and they get to know each other, this could make for bigger groups to be aligned at the end. I like keeping them apart for as long as possible and to let them know nothing about each other (or at least as little as they possibly can).

I'm just still coming to terms with the fact that there will be 20 survivors. That's ridiculous, and it just means that you will get to know everyone less, and will have to wait for the interesting stuff for longer (i had difficulty adjusting to 18 people from 16). I like Tejayes original idea - it was relatively simple, and the more complicated the twist, the less likely it will happen and the less like survivor the game will become.

Don't know if this idea has been suggested.

Start off with everyone living together as one big tribe. But for immunity challenges the tribe is randomly split into two. They compete with the winning tribe being immune. Then they all go to tribal and vote. So there are still twenty votes, but 10 are immune. Much harder to control who is going. It keeps going this way until down to 10 then the immunity is individual. That way no alliance is safe. You could have 5 person alliance, but the luck of the draw one week has 4 people immune and the leader is not. Plus everyone is together, more chance of conflict, plus everyone knows eachother from the beginning, more schemeing plotting and general problems keeping things straight.

The would have to build a huge TC set to have all 20 there for the first TC, so probably not. However, having randomly determined "tribes" competing for immunity, the "tribes" changing members randomly every episode or every other episode, would accomplish the same thing.

thats an idea i came up with as well (i know a lot of ppl came up with that)

but i suggested that the 10 immune people do NOT go to tribal council, of course they can TRY to influence the vote when they get back to camp right after the challenge but do not go to TC...

therefore, the luck of the draw is the teams that are drawn and the desire to win team immunity...

if everyone goes to TC, an alliance can still run the show but if your main alliance won immunity, ud have to play pretty hard to not get voted off...

What I would like to see is the game starting with 18. This way it can be split by 2 teams or 3 or just one.

You start out with two teams. Have tribal counsels more often and the members voted out slowly creating a new third tribe. This way not only do they have to think of who they want out but also who they'll be sending to the other tribe. They can't just vote out the strong or the young because a new strong tribe would then be created.

Also this way it wouldn't be so unfair to the first person voted out because he/she would then still be active in the newly forming tribe.

Once the third tribe is formed, start doing tribal counsels the usual way.

I also like the tribal separation, however many teams are involved. It keeps every one from knowing enough to see the really rational game strategy (as if they would follow that if it written on tablets of stone) and lack of knowlege makes for decisions that are more idiotic, more emotionally based, more game strategy gone awry, and generally more entertaining. Separate the tribes. If there are more than two, don't even tell them how many there are, and if possible, have challenges in sets of two, so that each tribe (for the first few episodes at least) has no idea theat there are more than two tribes involved.

ANd someone who is voted out should be out for good. I agree with that, the only exception might be the first one or two bootees. It is a waste of time and space and spoiler energy to have the first one or two bootees show up, then go home after a few days without any spoiler fun. Somehow, it should be possible to make more use of those two. Maybe a separate reward for the "Unsurvivor, least able to survive the island." Or the Girly man/woman(?) award.

Last thought before the bell, Have the bootee sit beside JP in the following TC, asking questions, outing deceptive promises, alliances, generally stirring up as much mischief as he/she can.

78. "How About"
We start out with 20. The shocker is that Jeff tells them they are all living together at the same beach. No tribes. So they go off, trying to figure out what is going on, making introductions, etc.

In the first treemail, they are told to bring their stuff to the challenge. Aha, they think. Now we will divide up into tribes. They get there, they divide up into teams, and Jeff passes out challenge buffs. Then, in another surprise, he says – okay – red team, go over there and sit. The first group of ten then runs an Individual Immunity Challenge. When they are done, and one person has immunity, they pick up their stuff and go to a new location to prepare for tribal. The second group then does the same thing. So that night, two people are eliminated, bringing our numbers down to 18.

In episode two, two days later, they get the same message – come to the challenge and bring your stuff. They are told to drop their buffs, and they pick new teams, this time nine to a side. Once again, each group runs an II challenge. Once again, the new, reshuffled tribes, go to separate locales to each vote off another member. So that night, two more people are eliminated, bringing our numbers down to 16.

In episode three, two days later, they get the same message – come to the challenge and bring your stuff. They are told to drop their buffs, and they pick new teams, this time nine to a side. Once again, each group runs an II challenge. Once again, the new, reshuffled tribes, go to separate locales to each vote off another member. So that night, two more people are eliminated, bringing our numbers down to 14.

In episode four, the next day, they get the same message – come to the challenge and bring your stuff. However, Jeff does not ask them to drop their buffs – rather, they are now two tribes, competing for a reward. They will stay with this tribe configuration, working reward and immunity as a tribe, until the merge.

82. "Rewards?"
DWeasel, you're idea sounds very workable...in your scenario, the thing we need to consider is the mechanism MB plans to use to replace the rewards.

If there are to be multiple TC's in the early episode's as well as individual IC's, then there probably isn't enough time to include a RC. The RC could be combined with the IC so that MB can somehow still get "fire" and the other essentials needed for survival to the tribes. Would the individual IC/RC winners get a personal reward as well as a tribal reward, or would it be up to the IC/RC winner to decide.

The rewards are too important in the early stages of the game. They are the vehicle by which MB allows the contestants to survive. They are the conduit by which MB gets essential food and supplies into the hands of the survivors, without which they probably couldn't really survive.

While the seperate Reward Challenge may be eliminated in the early episodes, the reward itself will need to be combined with the IC or incorporated into the game in some other way.

Maybe MB will bring in the "Cargo Cult" concept not used in Vanuatu, make rewards less vital at that point. On the other hand, the dynamics of the show revolve around (most episodes) two challenges and a TC, those things help drive each episode along.

Agreed. The basic format you describe has been successful since S1 and remained unchanged. I would not expect MB to mess with success...

The number of contestants, the number of tribes, the swaps and twists, the challenges and rewards...these are the elements MB has chosen to refine over the last 9 seasons and what I would expect he will reinvent again.

But, as you point out, we will probably continue to have the three key elements: two challenges and a TC. This is the foundation of the show and unlikely to change very much, with the exception of perhaps the premiere episode or the finale.

I thought about rewards. I think the best way would be to work the reward into the IC someway. For example, if the IC were a race, then the tribe with the fastest net time would get the reward. You could do the same thing with accuracy challenges, I imagine.

Very Devious, Weasel (I've been wanting to say that for a while), and KB, et al.

Rewards are necessary in some form, as you say to keep the blokes alive, as real life action entertainment for the audience, and to stress the survivors and foment unrest.

And it's probably true that the RCs will remain an integral part of the game.

But MB could add unannounced reward challenges in addition to the structured challenges. One possibility for this, MB could have stuff accidentally wash up on the beach, not necessaritly at camp but away some distance, so that the more enterprising and lucky survivor(s) would find it after they wandered in search of wood or food or fish. At first the survivors would be uncertain whether this was part of the show or just good luck.

MB would then let something else accidentally wash up. The reaction of the survivors would change, with more of them heading out exploring, maybe accidentally finding other strategically placed treasures, and gradually waking up to the possibility that this may be part of the show. Some might find stuff and attempt to hide it from the others, creating conflict, stress, and another amusing aspects to their torture.

All the while, the predictable events (at least ICs, this would allow multiple ICs per episode) are held as scheduled so that it might be possible for one or more tribes to catch on and others not to. THen mix tribes. Players from the knowing team that switched to the less savy team might then begin sneaking around to find treasures hidden around that tribes camp.

Then at some point, JP informs the survivors that this was all one continuous unannounced reward challenge, won by which ever survivors found the most treasures. Give them a Rupert Tee Shirt.

I liked this idea (BrassFan started a new thread so I had to copy/paste) and I had another take on the tribal shuffling that's been discussed on this thread.
From Brass Fan:
How about this for a way to totally change the dynamic of Survivor...while also having the side effect of removing the possibility of Pagonging?
All 20 castaways are sent to a single beach, where they will live together. They all work to build their shelter(s).

On day 3, they arrive for their first reward challenge. They randomly draw buffs to divide into two groups. The group that wins gets the reward, the other group goes back to camp. Before anyone leaves, they all drop their buffs.

On day 4, they arrive for the immunity challenge. Again, they randomly draw buffs to pick their teams. The losing team has to go to tribal council, the winning team is safe.

This continues until the merge. For every challenge, the teams are randomly picked from the remaining castaways. For an odd number of castaways, there are an even number of buffs (i.e. for 15 castaways, there are 16 buffs). Whichever group ends up with an extra person has to decide who sits out that challenge.

My thought was two tribes. They compete as usual for reward. For immunity, the top 1/2 finishers are immune and stay together as a tribe until the next IC, the bottom half go to tribal council and stay together until the next IC. Again, at the next IC, the top finishers are immune and are a new tribe for a few days. The losers go to IC and are a tribe for a few days. This means the fittest will probably be around for more than 3-6 days and the constant shuffling makes TC more interesting.
