"SPOILER - TV Guide listing for 3/11" |
I'll try to leave enough space so that someone who is randomly perusing the thread listings and doesn't want to know what happens in the future can safely avoid this thread.OK, for the rest of you, this is what TV Guide has to say about the first episode on March 11: >>The reality series in which 11 two-member teams compete for $1 million in a thrilling race around the world returns for a second edition. “The competition this time around is a lot tighter,” says host Phil Keoghan. “It is very competitive all the way through and builds to a truly sensational finish.” The teammates (most are friends, couples or relatives) begin their quest in Las Vegas and learn of their first stop: Rio de Janeiro. Last year, the teams traveled 35,000 miles in 31 days. This time the total distance is 55,000 over the course of 28 days. “We put them under a lot more pressure this time,” reports Keoghan. “We're talking about some pretty cranked-up, jet-lagged, tired people.”<< First of all, not to brag or anything, but I was the first to note Brazil as a probable stopping point, though I must give due credit to AussieMark for saying that it would likely be first. Second, reading between the lines of Phil's comments, 55,000 miles in 28 days means MORE international travel, MORE airplanes, MORE airports and MORE bunching. I think I've noted my mixed feelings about bunching here a time or two - it makes the legs more competitive, but it also feels more artificial. Anyway, airport bunching is the lesser offensive of the two major types. We'll have to see about the monument bunching. Third, the distance traveled is the equivalent of traveling from here (Michigan) to LA every day for a month. Yikes. And fourth, the route has to be pretty roundabout, bouncing from north to south constantly. They may even backtrack this time around. Other comments are more than welcome.

My guess is that there will be at least 4 crossings of the equator - unless they plan on going all the way around the world, the only way to log 55,000 miles will be to go north/south a few times.

2. "More from CBS/Zap2It for 3/11" |
Press release from CBS via Zap2It:"Eleven couples will compete in a race around the world with one couple taking home a $1 million dollar prize when THE AMAZING RACE 2, the critically acclaimed one-hour reality adventure series, premieres in a special time period Monday, March 11 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) before moving to its regular Wednesday (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) time period March 13 on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is the host of the series. THE AMAZING RACE 2 will send 11 teams -- each comprised of two people who have a pre-existing relationship with one another -- on a trek around the world for approximately 30 days. At every destination, the couples will have to compete in a series of challenges -- some mental and some physical -- and only when the tasks have been completed will they learn their next destination. Couples who are farthest behind will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million. In the premiere episode, 11 diverse teams of two set off on the first leg of the race starting in the remote Nevada desert and quickly making their way to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Tensions escalate almost immediately between two teams as the pressures of being in the lead pack takes its toll. At the conclusion of the episode, the last team to arrive at the final destination is eliminated." Again, most of this is stuff we already know, so I only have a couple of comments: 1) The mention of mental challenges is encouraging. I thought the ratio of physical/mindless challenges to mental challenges in the last season was at least 3:1. 2) Only a couple of days in and already we have a lead pack. That's good... I wonder who's in it. And also, I wonder which two teams are feuding. Could Team Amen be casting disapproving eyes on Team Flamingo? Is Team Poser's braggadocio rubbing Mary & Peach the wrong way? Are the "Gusty Grandmas" tired of bailing out Team Road House? I guess we'll have to stay tuned.

Woohoo! Here we go! Thanks for finding and sharing the info about the first destination.I wonder why they decided to tell us where the start line and first destination are? It's kind of a shame that there isn't an introductory, pre-race episode to meet the teams (like on Temptation Island) but maybe the lack of action would have been boring. It would have meant that everybody would have survived at least two episodes! Hopefully the extra mileage just means that the flights will be longer, not more of them, so that the bunching doesn't increase proportionally. If there are extra crossings of the equator then we might get to see Australia, New Zealand and more of Africa. There have been no reports of racers in Australia, so maybe they visited Phil's home country of NZ. RB - thanks for sharing the credit for picking Brazil as Destination One with me. My guess is that after that they will go either somewhere else in S. America or to the UK or Iberian peninsular (Spain and Portugal) - if they go straight from Brazil it would be Portugal, otherwise it would be Spain. Cheers, - Mark

You're at least half right - check out the latest SPOILER for episode two. And I think you're right about the second half, though I would guess that there are other European cities they could go to.
