"HUH?"
FRom FEVER from Sydney....

The new series of Survivor will divide its contestants according to tribal tradition. The show's host, Jeff Probst, told the American media that the 18 contestants would be split along gender lines.

However, in a curious nod to the setting - Vanuatu in the South Pacific - he hinted the male tribe would take a leadership role and the female tribe would follow, at least initially.

The contestants include a youth mentor, a teacher, a barista, an FBI agent, a finance manager, a real estate agent, a drill sergeant and a mechanical-bull operator. Two of the women, say their biographies, are gay, a minor detail that has whipped up a tornado in the American media. "We really enjoyed these people," Probst said. "They were really, really fun."

Survivor: Vanuatu will be the first regular edition of the franchise to feature 18 contestants, divided into two tribes: the Yasur (the women, who will wear yellow bandanas) and the Lopevi (men, in red). Past series have had only 16; the total was increased to 18 for Survivor: All Stars.

The series was filmed over the past three months in the Vanuatu islands.

In the pictures of the first challenge, ypu only see the men going under the ropes first. i didn't think every man could outrun every woman for that short of a distance ( from start to first obstacle). maybe it is a timed competition.
men go first establish a time, then the women.

I have thought all along that the women were ahead of the men in the challenge pics. In the couple of clips we have seen with all of them going under the ropes, the women to appear to all be under the rope with the men lagging behind. IMHO!

I thought I read somewhere that the tribe camps are fairly close together. Perhaps the men are responsible for building the shelters and the women responsible for the food/water for a short amount of time? Just my guess

Are you suggesting that the two tribes live together, but compete separately (a la Thailand). I hope Shii Ann doesn't join this season.

But We've seen a few camp shots, and they are definitely segregated men and women.

I am really curious about this. Also, how is it a nod to the South Pacific that the men lead and the women follow? isn't that a standard model for most human societies?

I can't imagine an explanation... and I think it's poor journalism to present such a vague statement

No, it doesn't appear that they actually live together at the start, though we really aren't shown too much. It was just a theory regarding the "men leading, ladies following" statement. When the tribes were seperated by gender previously, the women did a sucky job in the shelter department. Perhaps MB would want that tempered this time.

I am simply suspicious about a replay of strictly seperate gender tribes for a number of reasons. A. It's been done, old news. B. There are shots of ? (someone in a green/blue bikini) putting on a pretty good shower scene. What would be the point if the men weren't around? C. The majority of women "seem" to be smarter, wiser, strong willed, political, and independant minded than the usual crew. A perfect setup for a clash of modern Americans veiws of mens and womens roles, if they were forced into a subserviant/follower roles temporarily.

Jiffy: "a bunch of cocky guys"..."girls that are fighters". A mens team loaded with testosterone (FBI, construction, military), guys team pic taken looking tough and gruff...

Well, should be a kick whatever it is. Just spec on my part!
