- An interesting line from Brook concerning Johnk which may be regarding the first TC or the long term.
- He and Brady seem 'close' which may be a clue to LL.
“The Strong Members of a Male Tribe Seem to Have a Disadvantage”: An Interview with Survivor’s Brook
by David Bloomberg -- 09/28/2004
Brook was the first one voted out of Survivor: Vanuatu. In this exclusive interview with RealityNewsOnline, he explains why he was targeted, who was supposed to vote with his side, why he thinks he lost, and much more!
Brook went to the first Tribal Council thinking he had the necessary votes to stick around and see Chris off. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t turn out that way. In this interview with RealityNewsOnline, Brook explains how he prepared for Survivor, what went on in the men’s camp, how Chris became the target, and much more!
RealityNewsOnline: In your official CBS bio, it says you are a self-described Survivor fanatic. As such, what did you do, strategically and otherwise, to prepare for the game?
Brook: I had been preparing to play this game since I first decided I wanted a shot at the title two years ago. When I knew I was going to get a chance to play the game, I knew I had to beef up a bit so I chowed on cheeseburgers, hot dogs, steaks, and anything you can put on a grill for about three weeks before I left. I gained about 10 lbs and weighed around 200 lbs. Besides that I knew that I had some great assets that would help me be a great survivor and just felt my best strategy was going to be to use my knowledge of the game and assets to help me adapt as the game moved on!!
RNO: What was your first thought when the tribesmen came at you with spears?
Brook: I wasn’t worried..
RNO: Did you guys really go without drinking water for three days, or did anybody chance drinking from the stream due to thirst?
Brook: Brady and I both had some sips from the stream... Rudy drank that cloudy water on All-Stars and he's still ticking... we figured we'd be okay but only had a few sips each! Our water was really clear!!
RNO: We saw some of the women trying to build a shelter while others were lounging – what did the men do during their first three days, other than try to start a fire?
Brook: We LAUGHED and LAUGHED and LAUGHED for HOURS and HOURS and hours... It would be like 3 in the morning and right when we all thought it was time for bed someone would throw out some disgusting tasteless joke which could only be appreciated by nine guys who were just picked from a pool of 60,000 people because they were the most disgusting and tasteless of the group!!
RNO: As Chris was trying – and failing – to cross the balance beam, what was running through your head?
Brook: Well until then I hadn’t figured Brady out and as Chris fell over and over, Brady said this guy’s the weak link and he's got to go... I started thinking to myself cool... all I gotta do is convince one of these old guys it’s smarter for them to let us hang around and vote out Chris! Personally at that point I wanted to vote Rory out but I decided it would be smarter for me to tag on with the other guys (Brady and John K.) because they were so fired up about trying to get rid of Chris... J.P. at this point was surprisingly very quiet also, which saved him in the end!
RNO: We know why you targeted Chris, but what do you think made the older men target you, in particular?
Brook: I thought Chris was a hoot and actually tried to get J.K. and Brady to change the vote to Rory. They were like no, Chris... and I just went along with it. I don't think any of the older men targeted me but I do think Lea had to do something to save J.P. because J.P. was the one who always spoke so highly about Lea all around camp... Lea made a move to change the vote from J.P. to me!! Just as I went with Brady and J.K. to vote for Chris, they all went with Lea to vote for me! Smartest move those fools ever made!! If I didn’t go first I would have created some serious drama on Day 4! I wasn’t going out without a fight!!
RNO: Did you go to Tribal Council thinking you had enough votes to send Chris home, or were you still up in the air when you got there?
Brook: Yes, Bubba said he was going to vote with us!! He didn’t!
RNO: You still would have needed one more vote, but were you surprised to see that Brady, in particular, didn't follow the agreed-upon plan to vote out Chris as the weakest link?
Brook: Someone told Brady we were changing the vote and he... being the gullible knucklehead we all love... decided that it must have been Rory!
RNO: Were the age divisions we saw in the voting obvious in other things at camp, or were you all truly – as Rory claimed – acting like a family?
Brook: As I mentioned earlier we were a bunch of loud, cocky, and funny guys... we all had a great time joking around and there definitely were people who didn’t seem to fit in as well... but in the end those people were used to vote me out by some others who was me as a threat!
RNO: As a fan of the game, what would you say is the reason you were voted out first?
Brook: In a mixed tribe scenario, physically strong members of the game have an advantage before the merge, but a contrastingly opposite disadvantage when the teams merge for the individual part of the game. The weak members of the tribe have a disadvantage early in the game in this situation and an advantage of having less of a target on there back. When its men vs. women, the strong members of a male tribe seem to always have a disadvantage!
RNO: Thanks, Brook!
